El Greco was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect active during the Spanish Renaissance. Born in Crete in 1541, he received training in the Byzantine tradition before moving to Venice, Rome, and eventually Toledo, Spain where he lived until his death in 1614. El Greco is known for his elongated figures and use of color, blending Byzantine and Western styles. Some of his most famous works include The Assumption of the Virgin and The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.
