The 2020 Democracy Index from The Economist Intelligence Unit found that democracy is in poor health globally. The average global score of 5.37 is the worst since the index began in 2006, driven by declines in all regions due to restrictions on civil liberties from the COVID-19 pandemic. Only about half of the world's population live in a democracy, and fewer than 8.4% reside in a "full democracy." More than one-third of people live under authoritarian rule, mostly in China. The number of flawed and hybrid democracies declined slightly, while authoritarian regimes grew in number.
