The Texas Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (TEHDI) was established in 1999 to require newborn hearing screenings and follow-up services. Over 400,000 babies are born in Texas each year, and 2-3 per 1,000 are born with hearing loss. TEHDI works to screen newborns and ensure those who do not pass are referred for diagnostic evaluation and early intervention services if needed. TEHDI receives funding from Medicaid, grants from the CDC and HRSA, and works to reduce the rate of loss to follow-up through outreach and education.
