PREZI

What is prezi?
Prezi is a U.S. software company, producing a cloud-based (SaaS) presentation
software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. The product
employs a Zooming User Interface (ZUI), which allows users to zoom in and out of their
presentation media, and allows users to display and navigate through information within
a 2.5D or parallax 3D space on the Z-axis. Prezi was officially established in 2009 by cofounders Adam Somlai-Fischer, Peter Halacsy and Peter Arvai
.Prezi is that it is a presentation tool. Essentially, it allows users to present
information to a group, similar to Microsoft PowerPoint. Unlike PowerPoint, Prezi needs
the internet to work. Users create an online account with Prezi where they both make and
store their Prezi presentations. If they want to deliver their presentations, the internet is
required.
Prezi presentations do not follow a traditional slide format. Rather, a Prezi
presentation is much more free-flowing. Users position their information, images and
videos on a large, white background, called the “Prezi Canvas”, and develop a path for the
presentation to follow.

EDCANVAS

INTRODUCTION TO EDCANVAS
Edcanvas is the best way for teachers to teach with digital content. It provides a simple
and fun way for teachers and students to gather and learn from multimedia content. It
functions as one stop centre to search a lot of different web services to add into your canvas.
For instance, you can search for YouTube videos, photos from Flickr general web searches on
Google and many more. Edcanvas allows you to gather all of these resources into the canvas
and have them ready to present in the class so that you have everything ready at your
fingertips in one location.
You can sign up for Edcanvas account using three different ways which are your
existing Google account, Facebook account or you can just use your email. Besides that, you
can also choose to sign up either as a teacher or a student. Then, everytime you want to gather
resources for any new topic, you just need to start a new canvas. If you feel like to make a
change to your old canvases by adding new resources, you can always edit your old canvases.
To add resources, a very simple way can be used which is by dragging and dropping the
resources to your canvas.
Furthermore, you can also browse other canvases created by a lot of people to see the
resources that they have gathered for their topics. Then, you will get the idea on how the
canvas is created. To help teachers running an interesting class, Edcanvas serves a medium
for teachers to create a class account for their students to create canvases as well as find out
canvases made by others.
After you have done creating the canvas, you can present it easily from within
Edcanvas. You just need to click the play button on the top of the canvas and have it
presented the same way as Powerpont Presentation. The great thing about Edcanvas is you
can share your canvas as well. Once you have created a canvas, it can be shared via URL,
embedding to your site or blog, on Facebook, or through a QR code enabling the students to
access the canvas through an iPad (Beierle, 2013).
33
BENEFITS OF USING EDCANVAS
1. Flipping classroom
By using Edcanvas, teachers and students do not need to go to the other web pages to
search for the online information. Otherwise, they can just type in what they are
looking for into the box provided on the right. When the items appear, they just need
to drag and drop them at their canvas. While creating the canvas, students can also take
notes or provide their comments at the same time. This would be really helpful in
creating attentive and active students in the classroom. Besides that, Edcanvas also
helps in triggering the student’s attention as it appears in colours. Therefore, the
classroom will be much more cheerful and interesting.

2. Student assignments
Students can use Edcanvas to complete the assignment. If they are required to prepare
a slideshow presentation, they can use this web to replace the regular Microsoft
Powerpoint. Who knows, by using this web, students can gain extra mark for their
different way of presentation. Furthermore, this would slowly instill the computer
literacy among the students themselves. It also prepare students to practise and
demonstrate 21st century learner skills.

3. Dynamic presentations
As I have said earlier, sometimes we need to be different from others. If the old way
seems boring or ineffective, we should make an attempt to make changes. Thus,
Edcanvas serves as an effective tool for dynamic presentations among teachers and
students as well. As it provides multimedia content, it would be really interesting.
Teachers and students will engage in a very condusive atmosphere to begin the
learning session. No more boring Powerpoint Presentation will be used if we know
how to use Edcanvas. Edcanvas would also be beneficial in attending to different
learning styles such as visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

process. In other words, it is an online teaching site where the teacher can sign up for free and
the students do not need an email address to sign up as the teacher will create the students'
accounts. Not only that, there is no need to install anything. The teacher can make accounts at the
limit of 30 students and a maximum of 15 activities. Also, the students’ results are stored for 30
days which is equivalent to one month. The account will be deleted after the teacher has not been
active for 60 days.

It is an online teaching site that is to manage as it does not require programming
knowledge. Activities such as games or quizzes are designed as exercises for students. The
teacher can also conduct online exams and tests. Furthermore, the teacher can create groups or
forum for students to share important information, documents or files. The materials and/or
assignments uploaded can be accessed by the teacher’s permission. The materials and/or
assignments provided can also be accessed via the web address. Moreover, the teacher can notify
the students or give personal feedback by sending individual or mass e-mail messages to the
students.

93
Benefits of using kubbu

One of the benefits of using kubbu is free registration which means that the teacher can
use it for free. It is also easy to use and manage as well as not a hassle as it does not require the
teacher to install anything. No programming knowledge required in order to use this site.
Moreover, only the teacher has to sign up for an account because the teacher will make accounts
for the students. Also, the teacher does not require the students’ email address as it is optional.
The maximum number of students is 30. The students only require the login data which are the
teacher’s user name and password, each student has a different password.

Furthermore, the teacher can create activities for the students using kubbu. There are five
different types of activities which are match, divide, slider, composer, and crossword. The great
thing about these activities is that the teacher can customize it to his/her liking or preferences.
For instance, the matching game can be an activity of finding the correct pair of words that have
same or similar meanings. It can also be linking up activity between the country and the capital
of the country. Moving on, the divide activity. For this activity, you divide types of nouns,
negative prefixes and etc. into different groups. You can divide it up to four groups. The activity
is drag-and-drop.

Other than that, the slider activity. The slider activity is similar to multiple choice
questions. The teacher can customize it by choosing either single answer, multiple answer or
‘climb up’. ‘Climb up’ is where the difficulty is rising with each question and the quiz ends with
the first wrong answer. Another activity is the composer where the teacher can choose from a lot
of options. Namely, short answers, fill-in, true/false, and pop-down. The teacher can also add
image, picture and sound. Last but not least, the crossword. The teacher just needs to add words
and hints. The teacher can add a lot of words as there is no limit. After the teacher is done fill in
the words and hints, just click ‘Generate crossword’ and the crossword will automatically be
done for the teacher.
94
In addition to that, to all the activities mentioned above, the teacher can decide if he/she
wants to set a time limit or not, to include instructions or reveal the correct answers. Also, the
teacher is limited to 15 activities at a time and the teacher decides whether to make it accessible
to others or not. The activity is also accessible via the web address which makes the activities are
available online. The teacher can try the activity that he/she create. Besides that, the teacher can
print, share, duplicate and convert the activity. Not only that, the teacher can view the activity’s
result and statistics to know the student’s performance. The activities can be shared as well as
exchanged with other teachers.

Apart from that, the teacher can conduct online examinations or tests which make things
a lot easier for the teacher because the results are calculated automatically and stored in the
teacher’s database for 30 days. Also, the results can be compared and sorted by different criteria.
Prior to the examinations and tests, the teacher can group or class and upload activities for them
to revise and forum for the teacher to have a discussion session with the students. Moreover, the
teacher can upload important information, files, notes, teaching materials and assignments where
the students can view and download for their revision. The teacher can specifically send an
individual message to a particular student or mass e-mail messages to a group of students.

CHAPTER

STIXY

Introduction to Stixy

Stixy is a website that is within the Web 2.0 domicile which allows users to post items
and notes on a virtual bulletin board space. What is a virtual bulletin board you ask? Well, it
comprises of mostly usage regarding the collecting of information, furthermore organizing them,
and lastly users may publish and share this information with other users who have also created an
account on the website. The beauty with Stixy is that through its open-ended design, it does not
limit users’ creativity and also accessibility, as it supports multiple file formats such PDF,
Windows Words DOCS for the uploading of documents onto the website for sharing, and also
supports picture formats like JPEG, PNG and GIF for the distribution of images online.
As aforementioned, Stixy is designed with “open-endedness” being the primary purpose,
allowing common and familiar processes such as dragging and dropping onto these “bulletin
boards”, making it easy for users of any age or IT background to utilize. Just like established
social networking sites like Facebook, and MySpace, Stixy employs similar information
conveyance, except focusing more on the interaction occurring from within one spatial
constraints, namely the bulletin board, where the administrators may add members into the
discussion, allowing them to access the knowledge and also items from within the bulletin
boards itself, giving the administrators full control of the discussion. This I find is very
applicable to making the modern day learning process become more interactive while being
technological.
While studying its ability to be interactive and social, we will also look at the interesting
user interface the software may offer, analyzing the freedom to choose fonts, creating users’
individualities on notes, personalizing them at the same time making them more interesting for

119
readers especially the young. The colourful nature of this freedom will entice the audiences’
attention.

Fun facts regarding the establishment of Stixy.com

The establishment of Stixy is not really about which ideas popped into the heads of its
creators, but from frustration of the existing with the available collaborative Web services in the
past. Below here, some interesting information regarding the conception of stixy.com;

1. The creators of the Website are actually experienced design specialists that deals with
web construction, led by Jonas Höglund, who opened a significantly famous company in
Sweden. He was recently appointed as the Information Architect over at IKEA
headquarters in Sweden also. IKEA being a brand famously-known by furniture addicts
worldwide who search for quality.
2. Anders Ottoson is also among the first founders of Stixy, with over 15 years working as a
professional design experience, and has helped launch a staggering 100 corporate
websites.
3. Both creators are native Swedish and are living in Sweden also.
4. The site is created only recently and in 2007.
5. The website is popular among users in the Swedish region as a tool for education.
6. Having shared an almost similar name, the website uses the same principles as Sticky
Notes in Windows 7 in note making, except with more options to personalize the notes by
font size, colour etc.

120
Benefits of Using Stixy (from an educational standpoint)

As facts gathered from the previously stated findings, we may deduce that among the
benefits from the usage of Stixy is that it allows educators to convey or deliver lessons more
effectively and conveniently. In other words, stixy.com might as well replace traditional
classrooms in the future, with an array of specialties.
The most similar comparison to an existing website that applies the same principle as
posting on a wall/bulletin board is Wallwisher, as both of them project information and all the
need-to-know by the readers/learners on a specified space. Different from Wallwisher, Stixy
does not have a limit in terms of amount of letters allowed on a single note as this might hinder
the learning process. As oppose to Stixy, Wallwisher does not have this feature as it limits the
amount of letters up to only 160. This is identified to be some of the most interesting if not useful
tool that Stixy has in comparison to other Web 2.0 out there right now.
Besides that, while using Stixy, users may choose the sizes of the fonts on the notes, the
colours of the fonts, and lastly the note’s background colors. This personalization of notes may
make the interface appear more interesting, at the same time enticing the attention of audiences
who are participating in a discussion. The many color schemes that may be used for making
notes will refrain the discussion from looking rather dull and generic, thus making the
participants lose interest in it. As teachers, it is important to note this agents of enticements as it
may either help or hinder in the delivery of information or knowledge.
Moreover, among the benefits of Stixy is that it allows administrators who have set up a
bulletin board for a discussion, to have access in controlling their privacy, ensuring only those
pertaining to the discussion as seeing the content. That being said, confidential discussions
regarding a particular subject may be undergone without any interruption from external forces
who wishes to interrupt a discussion without even being summoned. This can be possible by
tweaking with the setting to either be viewed by public or members of discussion only, with
outside viewers being able to leave comments on the comment boxes. The smoothness of a
delivery of knowledge in a learning session should be highly emphasized by teachers in order to

121
convey concise and accurate teachings; therefore it is important for a lesson to not be disrupted
by anything.
In addition to all these benefits, teachers may utilize Stixy as a form of true visual
learning experience as the site offers no maximum size for a Stixyboard (bulletin board)
therefore users may roam free with whatever input they may have into the discussion, making the
learning process a more liberating and interesting experience. At the same time, it is also
important to note how the website enables users to share pictures, and also documents, rendering
the possibility of delivering accurate and clear instructions, whilst at the same time using the
learners’ full ability of ingesting information through the visual sense.
Lastly, it is also important to note, how the site offers auto-save system, which if in the
event that a computer is corrupted and all data is lost, there is a backup saved in your account
that you may open again and continue the lesson. This way, it avoids mishaps to happen,
especially when considering young learners who are clumsy might just close a discussion
accidentally.
These factors are what make Stixy such a good website. Accordingly also, Stixy, is free
to sign-up, and free to use by all.

122
Tips to make the learning experience more effective using Stixy
Stixy is an easy-to-use website which allows sharing. However, considering its features,
it is also important to note that in order to make a learning session to have an intent outcome, it is
important if you follow some of the tips:

1. Before beginning a lesson in Stixy, ensure that your learners have signed up for an
account to fully utilize the Stixyboards and not a commenter on the comment boxes. It is
easy, free and hassle-free therefore making it convenient for users.
2. Begin teaching sessions with the beginner level, that is making instructions clear, and
also assist them in using the website.
3. Use contrasting colours for the background and font in order to make the notes
understood well by the learner. For example, black font on white background and vice
versa.
4. Do not upload files larger than the permitted size. Large files that do not abide the
permitted size will not be successfully uploaded. Therefore, ensure that any pictures have
the exact size or smaller than the permitted size by resizing, or changing its format.
Furthermore, for documents, you may convert to other more convenient type of files.
5. Be patient. It is also important to note that with an abundance of users, there are bound to
be heavy traffic which might delay the smoothness of the lesson. Therefore, alert and also
notify how sometimes lags and crashes are to be expected. However, that is what autosave is for!

GNOWLEDGE

What is Gnowledge?
First of all, Gnowledge is a public Internet portal that enables everyone to form, publish,
share and take tests, exercises and assignments. Everyone is a student for a certain period
throughout our life. Generally, each student has to engage with exams, exercises and
assignments. So, by using Gnowledge all the tasks are becoming easier and less burden.

Second, Gnowledge was conceived and widen to address the aforementioned market need
in the information age. By using Gnowledge, it eradicates the need to manually mark and correct
tests, assignments and excercises with absolute answers. The function is same as how computer
spreadsheet gets rid of the manual financial analysis.

Last but not least, Gnowledge is content-neutral and offers everyone the infrastructure to
freely create their own tests, exercises and assignments. Moreover, they are free to share the
materials with their peers, students and these tests can then be discovered and used by interested
third parties. For example, YouTube provides the infrastructure for its users to share videos.
Users upload their own substance and share them with their friends. In addition, the uploaded
content is also discoverable by interested third parties who search for them by typing the
keywords and subject matters.

246
How does Gnowledge work?

The Gnowledge is a public portal which means it is free-to-use. Anyone who signs up
will gain full access to all accessible features. Registered users can create, take and share tests,
exercises, quizzes and assignments anywhere, anytime. Tests are categorized by four major
elements which are country, subject, grade and school.

Besides, we can create different tests. All questions within each individual test are
randomized, promoting repeatability, knowledge understanding and absorption of answer
memorization. Tests are marked and corrected automatically upon submission of a test and
results are available immediately after the submission. Registered users can keep track of their
academic progress by looking at the history of test results and answers.

Furthermore, every test in progress can be saved and completed at a later time without
having to start all over again. Users can create a test which can consist of four types of questions;
Fill in the blanks, Match, Objective/Multiple Choice and True/False questions. These question
forms cover most assessment question formats with a few exceptions, and these exceptions can
easily be permutated to fit either of the above formats. Test creators have their own Vanity Page
(www.gnowledge.com/username) that exhibits only their published tests. It is a practical trait for
test creators to personalize Gnowledge for their own purpose and usage. They only have to share
their Vanity Page web address and all their published tests can be accessed in one location.

Alternatively, test creators who have their own websites or blogs can link directly to their
published tests via each test’s unique web address and thus personalize Gnowledge even further.
Test creators can see all assessments of theirs either by their students or the general public via
the Test Activity Report. The Test Activity Report shows the test history of the test creator’s
published tests, assessment answers, feedback and ratings given by assessors and high, low and
average score statistics.

247
Who is Gnowledge for?

Gnowledge is suitable for students, educators and parents.

The benefits of using Gnowledge.

Gnowledge has a lot of advantages on students, teachers and parents.

Students who use Gnowledge frequently can learn by understanding and increase
knowledge absorption due to the nature of the way tests are presented. No more rote
memorization. Students will be excited and curious about technology as they can share the
materials among the student’s circle of friends and it is possible to discuss via Facebook, Twitter
and/or e-mail.

Besides, it promotes student self-learning by offering a fun and interactive medium of
learning. It also eradicates time-consuming for repetitive correction and marking for tests,
exercises and assignments. In addition, teachers can use Gnowledge to connect and communicate
with students via Facebook, Twitter and/or e-mail. If the Gnowledge is used frequently, the
educators may find themselves more free time.

Last but not least, Gnowledge is a productive internet usage. Even busy parents can
encourage their children to use Gnowledge as a fun way to promote their academic growth and
prowess without consuming a lot of time. As all test histories are stored on Gnowledge, parents
can keep track of their children’s academic progress anytime anywhere. Enterprising parents can
even take the role of educators and create their own tests, exercises and assignments for their
children.

248
How to use Gnowledge.

First, Gnowledge.com is free for everyone to use. Tests, exercises and assessments can be
entered into the website by registered users. The materials are categorized by title, subject, grade,
school and/or country. Upon submission, these test papers are then made publicly available for
everyone to use. Students who are preparing for exams or those who wish to sharpen their
knowledge and understanding on certain subjects can search on Gnowledge.com for their desired
exercises and test papers.

Second, Gnowledge is used to create a test which contains multiple questions; Fill in the
blanks, Match, Objective/Multiple Choice and True/False questions

Third, test results, scores and answers of every user who has completed a test are stored
on Gnowledge.com. Users can review their test results and answers anytime and these results can
be shared with others if they choose to do so.

Educators who wish to use Gnowledge.com can choose to direct their students to any of
the available tests, or create their own. Any tests created by the educator are profiled on their
own personal Vanity Page, and educators will be able to view reports on who took their test,
their scores and comments as well as check on each individual answer.

  • 26. CHAPTER 2 PREZI What is prezi? Prezi is a U.S. software company, producing a cloud-based (SaaS) presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. The product employs a Zooming User Interface (ZUI), which allows users to zoom in and out of their presentation media, and allows users to display and navigate through information within a 2.5D or parallax 3D space on the Z-axis. Prezi was officially established in 2009 by cofounders Adam Somlai-Fischer, Peter Halacsy and Peter Arvai .Prezi is that it is a presentation tool. Essentially, it allows users to present information to a group, similar to Microsoft PowerPoint. Unlike PowerPoint, Prezi needs the internet to work. Users create an online account with Prezi where they both make and store their Prezi presentations. If they want to deliver their presentations, the internet is required. Prezi presentations do not follow a traditional slide format. Rather, a Prezi presentation is much more free-flowing. Users position their information, images and videos on a large, white background, called the “Prezi Canvas”, and develop a path for the presentation to follow. • 40. CHAPTER 3 EDCANVAS INTRODUCTION TO EDCANVAS Edcanvas is the best way for teachers to teach with digital content. It provides a simple and fun way for teachers and students to gather and learn from multimedia content. It functions as one stop centre to search a lot of different web services to add into your canvas. For instance, you can search for YouTube videos, photos from Flickr general web searches on Google and many more. Edcanvas allows you to gather all of these resources into the canvas and have them ready to present in the class so that you have everything ready at your fingertips in one location. You can sign up for Edcanvas account using three different ways which are your existing Google account, Facebook account or you can just use your email. Besides that, you can also choose to sign up either as a teacher or a student. Then, everytime you want to gather resources for any new topic, you just need to start a new canvas. If you feel like to make a change to your old canvases by adding new resources, you can always edit your old canvases. To add resources, a very simple way can be used which is by dragging and dropping the resources to your canvas. Furthermore, you can also browse other canvases created by a lot of people to see the resources that they have gathered for their topics. Then, you will get the idea on how the canvas is created. To help teachers running an interesting class, Edcanvas serves a medium for teachers to create a class account for their students to create canvases as well as find out canvases made by others. After you have done creating the canvas, you can present it easily from within Edcanvas. You just need to click the play button on the top of the canvas and have it presented the same way as Powerpont Presentation. The great thing about Edcanvas is you can share your canvas as well. Once you have created a canvas, it can be shared via URL, embedding to your site or blog, on Facebook, or through a QR code enabling the students to access the canvas through an iPad (Beierle, 2013). 33
  • 41. BENEFITS OF USING EDCANVAS 1. Flipping classroom By using Edcanvas, teachers and students do not need to go to the other web pages to search for the online information. Otherwise, they can just type in what they are looking for into the box provided on the right. When the items appear, they just need to drag and drop them at their canvas. While creating the canvas, students can also take notes or provide their comments at the same time. This would be really helpful in creating attentive and active students in the classroom. Besides that, Edcanvas also helps in triggering the student’s attention as it appears in colours. Therefore, the classroom will be much more cheerful and interesting. 2. Student assignments Students can use Edcanvas to complete the assignment. If they are required to prepare a slideshow presentation, they can use this web to replace the regular Microsoft Powerpoint. Who knows, by using this web, students can gain extra mark for their different way of presentation. Furthermore, this would slowly instill the computer literacy among the students themselves. It also prepare students to practise and demonstrate 21st century learner skills. 3. Dynamic presentations As I have said earlier, sometimes we need to be different from others. If the old way seems boring or ineffective, we should make an attempt to make changes. Thus, Edcanvas serves as an effective tool for dynamic presentations among teachers and students as well. As it provides multimedia content, it would be really interesting. Teachers and students will engage in a very condusive atmosphere to begin the learning session. No more boring Powerpoint Presentation will be used if we know how to use Edcanvas. Edcanvas would also be beneficial in attending to different learning styles such as visual, auditory and kinesthetic. 34

In other words, it is an online teaching site where the teacher can sign up for free and the students do not need an email address to sign up as the teacher will create the students' accounts. Not only that, there is no need to install anything. The teacher can make accounts at the limit of 30 students and a maximum of 15 activities. Also, the students’ results are stored for 30 days which is equivalent to one month. The account will be deleted after the teacher has not been active for 60 days. It is an online teaching site that is to manage as it does not require programming knowledge. Activities such as games or quizzes are designed as exercises for students. The teacher can also conduct online exams and tests. Furthermore, the teacher can create groups or forum for students to share important information, documents or files. Furthermore, the teacher can create activities for the students using kubbu. There are five different types of activities which are match, divide, slider, composer, and crossword. The great thing about these activities is that the teacher can customize it to his/her liking or preferences. For instance, the matching game can be an activity of finding the correct pair of words that have same or similar meanings. It can also be linking up activity between the country and the capital of the country. Moving on, the divide activity. For this activity, you divide types of nouns, negative prefixes and etc. into different groups. You can divide it up to four groups. The activity is drag-and-drop. Other than that, the slider activity. The slider activity is similar to multiple choice questions. The teacher can customize it by choosing either single answer, multiple answer or ‘climb up’. ‘Climb up’ is where the difficulty is rising with each question and the quiz ends with the first wrong answer. Another activity is the composer where the teacher can choose from a lot of options. Namely, short answers, fill-in, true/false, and pop-down. The teacher can also add image, picture and sound. Benefits of Schoolgy There are many benefits that students and educators can gain from this web 2.0. Plus, this is not a normal and ordinary learning management system. It has redefined the learning management system to make online education a collective attempt between everyone involved in a student’s education. With an easy-to-use collaborative interface, Schoology empowers engaging instruction and system-wide association to develop the overall impact of everyone involved. This Schoolgy.com benefits the lecturers and students. it gives a new platform and initiative for them to learn. The function is quite similar with the pouring social networking nowadays such as facebook and twtter. But the aim and the main objective are different. As for facebook and twitter, the main purpose is to socialize in the virtual world. Whereas this schoology is more or less like the online school. There will be notes, assignments and quizzes carried out online. this will be a great help in getting the information and knowledge. Moreover, there are many parts of this LMS. They have web hosting, unique course web pages, aggregated calendars, secure and configurable messaging or email, district management, user management, curriculum and content management and many more. These things are just have to be explored by the educators as well as the students. they also have technical specifications which just gives more application and easiness for the user. 105

  • 126. CHAPTER 8 STIXY Introduction to Stixy Stixy is a website that is within the Web 2.0 domicile which allows users to post items and notes on a virtual bulletin board space. What is a virtual bulletin board you ask? Well, it comprises of mostly usage regarding the collecting of information, furthermore organizing them, and lastly users may publish and share this information with other users who have also created an account on the website. The beauty with Stixy is that through its open-ended design, it does not limit users’ creativity and also accessibility, as it supports multiple file formats such PDF, Windows Words DOCS for the uploading of documents onto the website for sharing, and also supports picture formats like JPEG, PNG and GIF for the distribution of images online. As aforementioned, Stixy is designed with “open-endedness” being the primary purpose, allowing common and familiar processes such as dragging and dropping onto these “bulletin boards”, making it easy for users of any age or IT background to utilize. Just like established social networking sites like Facebook, and MySpace, Stixy employs similar information conveyance, except focusing more on the interaction occurring from within one spatial constraints, namely the bulletin board, where the administrators may add members into the discussion, allowing them to access the knowledge and also items from within the bulletin boards itself, giving the administrators full control of the discussion. This I find is very applicable to making the modern day learning process become more interactive while being technological. While studying its ability to be interactive and social, we will also look at the interesting user interface the software may offer, analyzing the freedom to choose fonts, creating users’ individualities on notes, personalizing them at the same time making them more interesting for 119
  • 127. readers especially the young. The colourful nature of this freedom will entice the audiences’ attention. Fun facts regarding the establishment of Stixy.com The establishment of Stixy is not really about which ideas popped into the heads of its creators, but from frustration of the existing with the available collaborative Web services in the past. Below here, some interesting information regarding the conception of stixy.com; 1. The creators of the Website are actually experienced design specialists that deals with web construction, led by Jonas Höglund, who opened a significantly famous company in Sweden. He was recently appointed as the Information Architect over at IKEA headquarters in Sweden also. IKEA being a brand famously-known by furniture addicts worldwide who search for quality. 2. Anders Ottoson is also among the first founders of Stixy, with over 15 years working as a professional design experience, and has helped launch a staggering 100 corporate websites. 3. Both creators are native Swedish and are living in Sweden also. 4. The site is created only recently and in 2007. 5. The website is popular among users in the Swedish region as a tool for education. 6. Having shared an almost similar name, the website uses the same principles as Sticky Notes in Windows 7 in note making, except with more options to personalize the notes by font size, colour etc. 120
  • 128. Benefits of Using Stixy (from an educational standpoint) As facts gathered from the previously stated findings, we may deduce that among the benefits from the usage of Stixy is that it allows educators to convey or deliver lessons more effectively and conveniently. In other words, stixy.com might as well replace traditional classrooms in the future, with an array of specialties. The most similar comparison to an existing website that applies the same principle as posting on a wall/bulletin board is Wallwisher, as both of them project information and all the need-to-know by the readers/learners on a specified space. Different from Wallwisher, Stixy does not have a limit in terms of amount of letters allowed on a single note as this might hinder the learning process. As oppose to Stixy, Wallwisher does not have this feature as it limits the amount of letters up to only 160. This is identified to be some of the most interesting if not useful tool that Stixy has in comparison to other Web 2.0 out there right now. Besides that, while using Stixy, users may choose the sizes of the fonts on the notes, the colours of the fonts, and lastly the note’s background colors. This personalization of notes may make the interface appear more interesting, at the same time enticing the attention of audiences who are participating in a discussion. The many color schemes that may be used for making notes will refrain the discussion from looking rather dull and generic, thus making the participants lose interest in it. As teachers, it is important to note this agents of enticements as it may either help or hinder in the delivery of information or knowledge. Moreover, among the benefits of Stixy is that it allows administrators who have set up a bulletin board for a discussion, to have access in controlling their privacy, ensuring only those pertaining to the discussion as seeing the content. That being said, confidential discussions regarding a particular subject may be undergone without any interruption from external forces who wishes to interrupt a discussion without even being summoned. This can be possible by tweaking with the setting to either be viewed by public or members of discussion only, with outside viewers being able to leave comments on the comment boxes. The smoothness of a delivery of knowledge in a learning session should be highly emphasized by teachers in order to 121
  • 129. convey concise and accurate teachings; therefore it is important for a lesson to not be disrupted by anything. In addition to all these benefits, teachers may utilize Stixy as a form of true visual learning experience as the site offers no maximum size for a Stixyboard (bulletin board) therefore users may roam free with whatever input they may have into the discussion, making the learning process a more liberating and interesting experience. At the same time, it is also important to note how the website enables users to share pictures, and also documents, rendering the possibility of delivering accurate and clear instructions, whilst at the same time using the learners’ full ability of ingesting information through the visual sense. Lastly, it is also important to note, how the site offers auto-save system, which if in the event that a computer is corrupted and all data is lost, there is a backup saved in your account that you may open again and continue the lesson.
