A reading technique called SQ3R is also explained which involves surveying, questioning, reading, reciting and reviewing content.

For the purpose of this Presentation, LISTENING means and includes
all functions needed to be performed by the receiver of a
communication. So Art of Listening means Art of properly receiving the
communication and accurately understanding it in the same way as the
sender intended.
Importance of properly listening cannot be overemphasized. Improper
listening can lead to dire consequences even breaking of relationship.
Listening of sounds and feeling of emotions are the first skills we learn
even before birth. When we were infant our senses including listening
were sharpest. As we grow, our attention spreads and we gradually
lose sharpness in our focus on the communicator. These skills need to
be nurtured and developed.

TYPES OF LISTENING
1. Deep Listening. Listener is committed to understand the speaker’s
perspective paying attention to both verbal and nonverbal cues,
2. Full Listening. Listener pays close and careful attention to what the
speaker is saying.
3. Critical Listening. This involves using systematic reasoning and
careful thought to analyze a speaker’s message and separate fact from
opinion.
4. Therapeutic Listening. This means allowing a friend, colleague, or
family member to discuss their problems.

First let us recap the tools used by a LISTENER:
1. EARS: To understand the sounds
2. EYES: To read and to observe the visual signals
3. EMPATHY: To feel the emotions behind writings, voices,
signals & sounds.
One may have perfect Ears and Eyes but not necessarily be good
in Empathy. This may cause him to miss part of the
communication or totally misunderstand the message. Examples
are many in everyday life.

Here subject of discussion are not small messages but long texts,
Articles and Books. Effective Reading, requires certain skills. They
enable the readers to make sense of a text and also to dive deeper
and decipher the author’s intention.
SKILLS FOR EFFECTIVE READING
1. Understanding words Meaning is all about context.
2. Finding information Scanning for KEYword.
3. Identifying the main idea By connecting main ideas of
single paragraphs.
4. Sequencing sequence the order in which events occur.
5, Finding similarities and differences What some people,

READING TECHNIQUE (SQ3R)
1. Survey Read the Title, Headwinds, Sub-headings. Notice Bold &
Italics. Charts, Graphics, Charts & Maps.
2. Question Raise questions for each section. The better the
questions, the better your comprehension is likely to be.
3. Read Read one section at a time with your questions
4. Recite After each section, stop and recall your questions and
see if you can answer them from memory.
5. Review Once you've finished the entire chapter using the
preceding steps, go back over the questions you create for every
heading. See if you can still answer them. If not, look back and
refresh your memory and then continue.
