Classrooms were also more sparse, using wood desks and books instead of current technology. Overall, school 100 years ago placed more emphasis on discipline, practical skills, and early entry into the workforce compared to today's schools.
Schools in the past
Schools in the past used a bell to start and end the school day, had children sit at desks in lines facing the teacher, and had them write on slates with pens before paper was widely available. Students would practice writing over and over in copy books and used abacuses to help with math. Teachers would punish misbehaving children by making them wear dunce hats or striking their hands with canes, and kept logbooks to record each school day's events.
Changes In Teaching
Teaching methods have changed significantly over the past 100 years. In the past, teachers focused on whole-class instruction with large class sizes, making it difficult to meet individual student needs. Now, teachers focus more on individual and group learning to accommodate different learning styles. Additionally, questioning was once limited to answers the teacher could provide, while curiosity was discouraged. Current approaches emphasize developing useful questions and organizing thinking, using diagrams and encouraging curiosity. Students will also work in groups to create and perform skits illustrating different historical family units. The unit aims to teach students about cultural heritages and family traditions while developing their research, presentation, and collaboration skills.
