An educational program was developed by Ohio State University to promote awareness of primocane fruiting blackberries among Ohio fruit growers. Field trials of various primocane varieties have been established at OSU research stations to demonstrate their vegetative and fruiting habits to over 400 growers through field days, presentations, and tours. Primocane fruiting blackberries produce fruit on first-year canes and can eliminate losses from spring frost damage experienced by traditional floricane varieties. Future programs will focus on comparing the economic impacts of primocane versus floricane production systems through budgets and yield data from the demonstration plots.
