The demands of communication studies researchKenneth James
Research ranks among the most abused concept in the academic circle. Often times, a student who went to the library in search of facts to back up his or her term paper or assignment comes back to announce that he or she almost died carrying out research in the library. In this case, mere flipping through the pages of some books and copying some portions of the books become a research effort.
Again, some people perceive checking for the meaning of a word or an historical fact in the encyclopedia as a research activity (Osuala, 2005).
Research, however, is much more than all these. It is hardly as simple as consulting a dictionary or an encyclopedia to ascertain the meaning of a word or a historical fact that is already there in the dictionary or encyclopedia as the case may be.

Problems of managing state owned enterprises in nigeriaKenneth James
This study examined problems of managing state owned enterprises in Nigeria. A case study of AKTC, Uyo. The study employed a descriptive research method to conduct a random sampling technique which was used to select thirty (30) workers of the company as respondents. Instrument for the study was the questionnaire which was given to the respondents to fill-in their opinion and was later retrieved from them. The data gotten from the respondents were presented that problems faced by state owned enterprises are problem of training and retraining, lack of serene working environment, in discipline among the rank and file of public worker, lack of motivation. It was also discovered perhaps that the greatest problem facing these organizations is that of government interference in the management and decision making process of these organizations. Recommendations were made by the research, that government should stop interfering with the management of these organizations, staff training and re-training would be paid as at when due.
The document lists several residential, mixed-use, and age-restricted development projects in New Jersey and surrounding areas along with their size, location, status, and critical issues. Several projects are still in the process of obtaining approvals and entitlements while dealing with rezoning requirements, steep slopes, environmental issues like wetlands and brownfields, and providing adequate wastewater management. Larger mixed-use projects aim to develop thousands of residential units along with retail, commercial, and office space while addressing concerns over access, utilities, and meeting Mount Laurel obligations.

The Brand of Higher Education: Context for The Conflictidfive
Dr. Sean Carton from idfive looks at the history of higher education development—where we are now and what's coming next. http://idfive.com/the-brand-of-higher-education-context-for-the-conflict/
This document discusses the origins and development of the junior high school model in the United States. It provides context around how the junior high school emerged as a response to various educational, developmental, and social factors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, it notes that the junior high school grew out of the convergence of many conditions over time, rather than being caused by any single factor. These included concerns around college preparation, high dropout rates, the needs of adolescents, criticisms of the existing school system, and providing vocational training. The junior high school model filled a need and benefited from aligning with educational theories and challenges of the time period. Its continued success reflects an ongoing focus on providing an appropriate education for early

Coming of Age in America
From 1970 to 2000, most higher education institutions encountered various challenges. Although higher education made an effective transition to mass education access, it was more difficult to transition to universal education access. In addition, because of the diversity of students who were entering college, higher education institutions required tailoring.
Discuss the impact of topics, trends, and events during the 1970 to 2000 era on higher education. Explain the components that contributed to the "Coming of Age" in American higher education. What were the main issues during this time period? Do you feel that higher education institutions solved most of the issues of this era? Why or why not?

The document discusses economic continuity and change over time in Eurasia from 1000 BCE to 1200 CE. It analyzes how trade networks, governmental alliances, religion, and the continuity of warfare and social hierarchies expanded and integrated Eurasia's economic activity during this period. While trade networks and religious influences stimulated wealth and diversity, continual warfare and rigid social hierarchies also hindered economic growth at times by disrupting trade routes and intensifying competition over markets.
This document discusses the values of learning communities and learning to know. It provides historical context about how education has changed from focusing on developing individuals, to communities, to nations. Specifically, in earlier eras education aimed to filter and select students for different roles, but it expanded access over the 20th century. The challenges now are to clarify our educational purpose and design curriculum for the emerging knowledge era.

The May 1975 Student Strike in Mauritius and its Aftermath: A reflection on ...IJMREMJournal
The 1975 Student’s strike in Mauritius was a trigger to the need for greater equality in secondary education. It
was a time when such education was not free and students attending private secondary schools had to pay to
afford learning beyond their primary education to achieve the School Certificate and aim for a decent job. The
May 1975 uprising gave way to upper secondary level students’ demonstration in the urban areas with echoes
all over the country. The benefits of such a reform are manifold like wider access to secondary education to
girls, greater possibility for students to pursue education up to the Higher School Certificate including the
democratisation of education through the creation of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS). This paper claims that
May 1975 remains to-date an important turn in the secondary education system in Mauritius bringing a higher
level of democracy and creating a pathway for the decolonisation of education through the abolishment of the
Moray House Junior Scholarship, the ‘mauritianisation’ of local texts, the use of Kreol in teaching. However,
the lessons of 1975 might not apply to the contemporary context whereby elitist education still persists, socialist
ideologies have died and new student uprising has never been seen afterwards just to sum up that
decolonisation remains a challenging process albeit the 1975 unrest as a starting point of educational
decolonisation.

Chapter 4
Chapter Objectives Early school textbooks left little room for individual interpretation. Among the objectives that Chapter 4 seeks to achieve are these: 1. Students will understand and be able to evaluate the massive shifts in political economy, ideology, and schooling that took place at the beginning of the 20th century. 2. Students will also develop a deeper and broader base from which to evaluate the history of racial and ethnic prejudice in the United States. They should be able to compare progressive educational responses to ethnic differences with the responses to Irish Americans identified in Chapter 3 and later with the responses to African Americans identified in Chapter 6. 3. This chapter provides opportunity to assess the degree to which scientific management in the industrial workplace served the interests of workers and was or was not consistent with democratic ideals—including the role of women in society. Students will also be able to assess whether progressive social reform was consistent with democratic ideals. 4. The chapter also helps students evaluate the degree to which modern liberal ideology was consistent with specifically articulated conceptions of democracy, such as Jeffersonian participatory democracy and Dewey’s developmental democracy. 5. Students will consider the degree to which domestic social order was achieved by the exercise of the force of arms and by political and economic control of schooling, thus calling into question a “consensus” theory of social order. 6. Students will be able to distinguish among different strands of progressive education and evaluate the interests served by those different camps. 7. Finally, the chapter enables students to consider the degree to which all population groups of students were or were not equally well served by the four progressive educational aims of social stability, employable skills, equal educational opportunity, and meritocracy.

Introduction: “Traditional” versus “Progressive” Education In 1918 a team led by researchers Abraham Flexner and Frank Bachman evaluated the school system of Gary, Indiana, an industrial city of 50,000 inhabitants located 27 miles southeast of Chicago. In their report, The Gary Schools: A General Account, Flexner and Bachman took pains to prepare readers for the fact that Gary’s was no “traditional” school system, but rather a “progressive” system, and that traditional conceptions of the school would not be useful in understanding Gary’s schools.1 The student who comes to understand all the elements of the following excerpt from the report will understand a great deal about progressive education in the United States in the early 20th century. The Gary schools can be properly understood only when they are viewed in the light of the general educ ...
The document traces the history of graduate education in the United States from 1900 to present. It discusses key events and developments including the formation of the AAU in 1900 to standardize graduate programs, increased government funding during the New Deal and WWII eras which expanded access, the focus on research after Sputnik, and the rise of online education making graduate programs more affordable and accessible for non-traditional students. Economic conditions and societal changes have continued to shape graduate education over time.
Education for All: The Push for Universal Schooling in 19th Century Americafaizalkhan1393
The 19th century was a period of profound transformation for American education. Amid the sweeping changes of the Industrial Revolution, the United States saw a fundamental shift from a loosely connected system of local, often voluntary schooling to a more standardized, state-supported public education system.
The document discusses the challenges America faces in maintaining its competitive edge in the globalized world. It argues that the US must educate students to meet this challenge by having them take a rigorous college preparatory curriculum in high school to ensure they are ready for postsecondary education and careers. The future will be difficult if America does not lead in this new flat world through improving education. It also notes that jobs now and in the future will require strong skills in math, science, technology, and problem solving.

Colonial Revival Colleges Thelin (2011) noted that the
English universities Oxford and Cambridge greatly
influenced early American higher education. In addition,
Oxford and Cambridge were autonomous, privately
endowed and linked to a federation. The “collegiate
system” of combining learning and living was a seminal

time represented a good example of American society’s
enchantment for education without the overly strict rules
and standards. Reflect on the role of Medical Colleges in

Captains of Industry The wealth and energy between
1880 and 1910 was a unique and dynamic period in
higher education. During this time the stock market was
volatile and the rules that governed higher education were
mostly absent. In addition, there was an abundance of
industrial wealth, and a new level of philanthropic
generosity toward higher education.

1890 -1920. Consider how the “college man” and/or
“college woman” was becoming an imposing figure in
American higher education at the end of the nineteenth
century. How did this collegiate ideal help the
undergraduate college population increase? Analyze the
political, cultural and economic factors that were beneficial
and challenging to the stakeholders at higher education
institutions.

Reflect upon the opportunities to attend college for women
during this time period. Women made up about 40% of the

considering that women were not permitted to earn a

Gilt by Association From 1945-1970, a new set of
problems helped to transform higher education. After 1949
there was an explosion of enrollments due to
governmental agencies that recognized that higher
education had been proven effective, even during the war.
This led them to create public policies at both the state

Coming of Age in America From 1970 -2000, most
higher education institutions encountered various
challenges and issues. Although higher education made
an effective transition to mass education access, it was
more difficult to transition to universal education access. In
addition, because of the diversity of students who were
entering college higher education, higher education
institutions required tailoring.
