BELHAVEN SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
GUIDELINES FOR EXCEPTIONS TO APA FORMATTING – 2017
The Belhaven University School of Education uses the Publication
Manual of the American
Psychological Association, Sixth Edition. The Publication Manual of the
American
Psychological Association is the style manual of choice for writers,
editors, students, and
educators in the social and behavioral sciences.
However, the Belhaven University Graduate School of Education has
adopted 15 Exceptions to
the APA Publication Manual. It is not unusual for a university or a
School of Education to
implement their own exceptions to the APA formatting policies. The
reason the School of
Education Graduate Faculty has adopted the following exceptions is to
allow for papers to be
completed in a more user-friendly and readable format.
It should be remembered that the APA formatting guidelines were
originally put into place for the
publishing of articles and to provide publishers with the formatting they
were wanting to have
for use in setting the print for publication. Please note that if you should
submit an article for
journal publication, you will need to follow the APA guidelines as
identified by that journal or
publishing company, they most likely will not have any exceptions and
hold to strict APA
formatting rules. IMPORTANT TO NOTE
The Belhaven Graduate School of Education’s APA exceptions and
unique formatting guidelines
are indicated with the checked box symbol: Developed and adapted from
the (2001) Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association (6th ed.). Washington, D.C.: American Psychological
Association. APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES 2 APA EXCEPTIONS

APA Formatting Exceptions
Page Settings – Page Headers – Page Numbers
1. Belhaven requires that candidates use only 12pt Times New Roman.
Double space between all lines of the manuscript.
2. Except on the Reference page (see example Reference page) and the
title line on the
Title page (see sample Title page).
3. Belhaven requires a PAGE HEADER at the top left hand side of all
pages including the
Title page and the Reference page. Do not confuse this with APA’s
Running Header.
The School of Education does not use a Running Header. To create a
Page Header, insert page numbers flush right. Then type a shorten
version of the
TITLE OF YOUR PAPER in the header flush left using all capital
letters but do not print in
bold!! . The page header is a shortened version of your paper's title and
cannot exceed 50
characters including spacing and punctuation. Title Page
4. Title Page
Count down 15 single spaces form the Page Header and then center the
title of the
paper. Use upper and lower case lettering in Bold print. If the title is
longer than one
line, continue to next line and single space (do not double space the
title). If there is a
colon in the title, divide the title at the colon and then complete the title
on the next
line (no underlining). The title page should contain:
The Title of the Paper:
If Title Needs Two Lines do not Double Space
Author's Name
Belhaven University
Jackson Mississippi
January 00, 0000 APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES
5. 8 Please Bold print the Title and the Author’s name. However, do not
bold the
institution, the city and state, or the date. Also do not bold the PAGE
HEADER or
the page number. (See the sample Title page, page 5 of this Guideline)
Levels of Headings: Title, Division, Topic, and Paragraph Headers and
SubHeaders
6. On page number two immediately following the front cover, title
page, center the title
once again at the top of the paper right below the page header. Use upper
and
lower case
lettering in Bold print. If the title is longer than one line, continue
to next line and single
space (do not double space the title). If there is a
colon in the title, divide the title at the
colon and complete the title on the
next line. This is considered a Level 1: Header - (no
underlining).
7. Level 2: Sub-Headers: Flush to left margin, Bold print using upper
and lower case
letters (no underlining). 8. Belhaven University Graduate School of
Education only implements two levels of
headings at the undergraduate and Master’s levels: Level 1: Headers and
Level 2: Sub-Headers.
However, when writing their dissertations, doctoral candidates will
perhaps want to
employ additional headers at other levels as identified by the APA
Manual. Reference Page
9. Your Reference page should appear at the end of your paper
(Reference title to be
centered at the top of the page and in Bold). It provides the information
necessary for a
reader to locate and retrieve any source you cite in the body of the paper.
Each source
you cite in the paper must appear in your reference list; likewise, each
entry in the
reference list must be cited in your text. Your references should begin on
a new page separate from the text of the essay; label this page
References centered at the top of the page in Bold - do not underline, or
use quotation marks for
the title.
10. Line spacing of the Reference page: Double space only between new
reference
sources. Single space all lines from the same individual source. See the
following
example.
All lines after the first line of each entry in your reference list should be
indented one-half
inch from the left margin. This is called a Hanging Indentation. See
following example. APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES 9 Example:
References
Emmer, E. T. & Evertson, E. M. (2013) Classroom management for
middle and high school
teachers (9th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson.
Harlow, H. F. (1983). Fundamentals for preparing psychology journal
articles. Journal of
Comparative and Physiological Psychology, 55, 893-896.
Kernis, M. H., Cornell, D. P., Sun, C. R., Berry, A., Harlow, T., &
Bach, J. S. (1993). There's
more to self-esteem than whether it is high or low: The importance of
stability of selfesteem. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 65,
1190-1204. Bible & Scripture Referencing
11. Identify the version of the Bible using the acronym for that version.
Use acronyms with
all citations of the text.
Example: (2 Cor. 5:17 NIV) (Joshua 3:11 NLB) 12. Do not spell out the
version use acronyms for versions. However, at the end of the
Reference page, after listing all reference sources, double space down
from last
source and identify Bible source versions using acronyms in alphabetical
order.
Use a Hanging Indent. Example. Bible Versions
KJ - King James
NIV – New International Version
NKJ – New King James
NLB – New Living Bible
13. The Bible On the Reference Page
According to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association, 6th ed.,
2009, section 6.18, reference entries are not needed for the Bible and
other major
classical works. However, you will list the acronyms and spell out the
versions used by
listing those at the end of the Reference page. APA EXCEPTIONS
GUIDELINES 10 Spelling Bible and biblical
14. The word "Bible," when it refers to the sacred book is a
proper noun and is always
capitalized. "Holy Bible" and "Scripture" are
also proper nouns and should always be
capitalized. The word "biblical" is not a proper noun and is
not capitalized. Thus, you
could have a sentence that looks like this --- "She was a student of
the Bible and so she
had a biblical worldview."
(Cited from Donald L. Hughes, editor of ChristianWritingToday.com)
Spelling Christian worldview or Christian world view
15. The Belhaven Graduate School of Education has adopted the
following as the preferred
way to spell – Christian worldview – not Christian world view –
worldview is one word
not two words and is not capitalized. GENERAL APA GUIDELINES
11 GENERAL APA GUIDELINES
Papers are to be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper
(8.5" x 11") with 1" margins
on all sides. Belhaven requires that candidates use 12pt Times New
Roman.
Include a page header at the top of every page, including the Title page
and the
Reference page. (Page headers at times are miscalled Running Headers.
APA considers a
Running Header only for use on the Title page and it is different than a
Page Header). To
create a page header, insert page numbers flush right. Then type a
shorten version of the
"TITLE OF YOUR PAPER" in the header flush left using
all capital letters. The page
header is a shortened version of your paper's title and cannot exceed 50
characters including
spacing and punctuation. DO NOT use the words “Running Header:” in
your running
header!
Belhaven requires a Page Header on all pages including the Title page.
All pages are
numbered.
MAJOR PAPER SECTIONS
Your paper should include three major sections: the Title Page, Main
Body, and References.
Formatting the Paper
Margins. Uniform margins on every page - 1 inch margins - top, bottom,
right and left -On most word processors, 1 inch is the default setting for
margins. Do not justify the right
margin and do not use the hyphenation function to break words at the
end of lines. Let a line
run short rather than break a word at the end of a line.
Spacing/Line Spacing. Double space between all lines of the manuscript.
Important:
Word processing programs often automatically insert a line after each
paragraph, resulting in
triple spacing between paragraphs. Disable this feature prior to creating
a document.
Typeface – Font. The APA format requires work to be word-processed
with a 12 point font
in Times Roman or New Times Roman. Belhaven requires that
candidates use 12pt Times
New Roman – no exceptions.
Underlining versus Italics. Use italics rather than underlining. Do not
use the functions of
your word processor to create underlining, or other special fonts or
styles of type.
Page Numbers. Number all pages except those for artwork in the upper
right-hand corner.
Begin numbering pages with the title page. The number should appear at
least one inch
from the right-hand edge of the page and on the same line as the Header.
Headings/Page Headers. Pages occasionally are separated, so identify
each page with the
header flush left and page number flush right. To add a header to your
paper in Microsoft
Word 2007, complete the following steps:
1. Click Insert > Header > Blank. The cursor should be flush left.
GENERAL APA GUIDELINES 12 2. Type your title (abbreviated if
necessary) in all caps.
3. Tab over to the right-hand corner.
4. Click Insert > Page Number > Current Position > Plain
Number.
On a word processor, use the automatic functions of your equipment to
cause the headers and
page numbers to print out on your paper. Do not confuse the page
headers with the running
header for publication, which goes only on the title page.

  • 1. EDU 506 EDUCATOR PREPARATION FOR MORE CLASSES VISIT tutorialoutletdotcom EDUCATOR PREPARATION PROGRAM GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION GUIDELINES FOR exceptions to apa FORMATTING A QUICK APA FORMATTING REFERENCE GUIDE APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES 1 2017 THE BELHAVEN SCHOOL OF EDUCATION GUIDELINES FOR EXCEPTIONS TO APA FORMATTING – 2017 The Belhaven University School of Education uses the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is the style manual of choice for writers, editors, students, and educators in the social and behavioral sciences. However, the Belhaven University Graduate School of Education has adopted 15 Exceptions to the APA Publication Manual. It is not unusual for a university or a School of Education to implement their own exceptions to the APA formatting policies. The reason the School of Education Graduate Faculty has adopted the following exceptions is to allow for papers to be completed in a more user-friendly and readable format. It should be remembered that the APA formatting guidelines were originally put into place for the
  • 2. publishing of articles and to provide publishers with the formatting they were wanting to have for use in setting the print for publication. Please note that if you should submit an article for journal publication, you will need to follow the APA guidelines as identified by that journal or publishing company, they most likely will not have any exceptions and hold to strict APA formatting rules. IMPORTANT TO NOTE The Belhaven Graduate School of Education’s APA exceptions and unique formatting guidelines are indicated with the checked box symbol: Developed and adapted from the (2001) Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association. APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES 2 APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES 3 The Belhaven University Graduate School of Education Guidelines for Exceptions to APA Formatting A Quick APA Formatting Reference Guide Dr. David Hand Dr. Cynthia Wilkins APA Formatting Exceptions Page Settings – Page Headers – Page Numbers 1. Belhaven requires that candidates use only 12pt Times New Roman. Double space between all lines of the manuscript. 2. Except on the Reference page (see example Reference page) and the title line on the Title page (see sample Title page). 3. Belhaven requires a PAGE HEADER at the top left hand side of all pages including the Title page and the Reference page. Do not confuse this with APA’s Running Header. The School of Education does not use a Running Header. To create a Page Header, insert page numbers flush right. Then type a shorten
  • 3. version of the TITLE OF YOUR PAPER in the header flush left using all capital letters but do not print in bold!! . The page header is a shortened version of your paper's title and cannot exceed 50 characters including spacing and punctuation. Title Page 4. Title Page Count down 15 single spaces form the Page Header and then center the title of the paper. Use upper and lower case lettering in Bold print. If the title is longer than one line, continue to next line and single space (do not double space the title). If there is a colon in the title, divide the title at the colon and then complete the title on the next line (no underlining). The title page should contain: The Title of the Paper: If Title Needs Two Lines do not Double Space Author's Name Belhaven University Jackson Mississippi January 00, 0000 APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES 5. 8 Please Bold print the Title and the Author’s name. However, do not bold the institution, the city and state, or the date. Also do not bold the PAGE HEADER or the page number. (See the sample Title page, page 5 of this Guideline) Levels of Headings: Title, Division, Topic, and Paragraph Headers and SubHeaders 6. On page number two immediately following the front cover, title page, center the title once again at the top of the paper right below the page header. Use upper and lower case lettering in Bold print. If the title is longer than one line, continue
  • 4. to next line and single space (do not double space the title). If there is a colon in the title, divide the title at the colon and complete the title on the next line. This is considered a Level 1: Header - (no underlining). 7. Level 2: Sub-Headers: Flush to left margin, Bold print using upper and lower case letters (no underlining). 8. Belhaven University Graduate School of Education only implements two levels of headings at the undergraduate and Master’s levels: Level 1: Headers and Level 2: Sub-Headers. However, when writing their dissertations, doctoral candidates will perhaps want to employ additional headers at other levels as identified by the APA Manual. Reference Page 9. Your Reference page should appear at the end of your paper (Reference title to be centered at the top of the page and in Bold). It provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any source you cite in the body of the paper. Each source you cite in the paper must appear in your reference list; likewise, each entry in the reference list must be cited in your text. Your references should begin on a new page separate from the text of the essay; label this page References centered at the top of the page in Bold - do not underline, or use quotation marks for the title. 10. Line spacing of the Reference page: Double space only between new reference sources. Single space all lines from the same individual source. See the following example. All lines after the first line of each entry in your reference list should be
  • 5. indented one-half inch from the left margin. This is called a Hanging Indentation. See following example. APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES 9 Example: References Emmer, E. T. & Evertson, E. M. (2013) Classroom management for middle and high school teachers (9th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson. Harlow, H. F. (1983). Fundamentals for preparing psychology journal articles. Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology, 55, 893-896. Kernis, M. H., Cornell, D. P., Sun, C. R., Berry, A., Harlow, T., & Bach, J. S. (1993). There's more to self-esteem than whether it is high or low: The importance of stability of selfesteem. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 65, 1190-1204. Bible & Scripture Referencing 11. Identify the version of the Bible using the acronym for that version. Use acronyms with all citations of the text. Example: (2 Cor. 5:17 NIV) (Joshua 3:11 NLB) 12. Do not spell out the version use acronyms for versions. However, at the end of the Reference page, after listing all reference sources, double space down from last source and identify Bible source versions using acronyms in alphabetical order. Use a Hanging Indent. Example. Bible Versions KJ - King James NIV – New International Version NKJ – New King James NLB – New Living Bible 13. The Bible On the Reference Page According to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed., 2009, section 6.18, reference entries are not needed for the Bible and other major classical works. However, you will list the acronyms and spell out the
  • 6. versions used by listing those at the end of the Reference page. APA EXCEPTIONS GUIDELINES 10 Spelling Bible and biblical 14. The word "Bible," when it refers to the sacred book is a proper noun and is always capitalized. "Holy Bible" and "Scripture" are also proper nouns and should always be capitalized. The word "biblical" is not a proper noun and is not capitalized. Thus, you could have a sentence that looks like this --- "She was a student of the Bible and so she had a biblical worldview." (Cited from Donald L. Hughes, editor of ChristianWritingToday.com) Spelling Christian worldview or Christian world view 15. The Belhaven Graduate School of Education has adopted the following as the preferred way to spell – Christian worldview – not Christian world view – worldview is one word not two words and is not capitalized. GENERAL APA GUIDELINES 11 GENERAL APA GUIDELINES Papers are to be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5" x 11") with 1" margins on all sides. Belhaven requires that candidates use 12pt Times New Roman. Include a page header at the top of every page, including the Title page and the Reference page. (Page headers at times are miscalled Running Headers. APA considers a Running Header only for use on the Title page and it is different than a Page Header). To create a page header, insert page numbers flush right. Then type a shorten version of the "TITLE OF YOUR PAPER" in the header flush left using all capital letters. The page header is a shortened version of your paper's title and cannot exceed 50
  • 7. characters including spacing and punctuation. DO NOT use the words “Running Header:” in your running header! Belhaven requires a Page Header on all pages including the Title page. All pages are numbered. MAJOR PAPER SECTIONS Your paper should include three major sections: the Title Page, Main Body, and References. Formatting the Paper Margins. Uniform margins on every page - 1 inch margins - top, bottom, right and left -On most word processors, 1 inch is the default setting for margins. Do not justify the right margin and do not use the hyphenation function to break words at the end of lines. Let a line run short rather than break a word at the end of a line. Spacing/Line Spacing. Double space between all lines of the manuscript. Important: Word processing programs often automatically insert a line after each paragraph, resulting in triple spacing between paragraphs. Disable this feature prior to creating a document. Typeface – Font. The APA format requires work to be word-processed with a 12 point font in Times Roman or New Times Roman. Belhaven requires that candidates use 12pt Times New Roman – no exceptions. Underlining versus Italics. Use italics rather than underlining. Do not use the functions of your word processor to create underlining, or other special fonts or styles of type. Page Numbers. Number all pages except those for artwork in the upper right-hand corner. Begin numbering pages with the title page. The number should appear at
  • 8. least one inch from the right-hand edge of the page and on the same line as the Header. Headings/Page Headers. Pages occasionally are separated, so identify each page with the header flush left and page number flush right. To add a header to your paper in Microsoft Word 2007, complete the following steps: 1. Click Insert > Header > Blank. The cursor should be flush left. GENERAL APA GUIDELINES 12 2. Type your title (abbreviated if necessary) in all caps. 3. Tab over to the right-hand corner. 4. Click Insert > Page Number > Current Position > Plain Number. On a word processor, use the automatic functions of your equipment to cause the headers and page numbers to print out on your paper. Do not confuse the page headers with the running header for publication, which goes only on the title page. ***************************************************
