Hades was the god of the Underworld and king of the dead. He ruled over two sections - Tartarus for the damned and Erebus for the dead, as well as the Elysian Fields for heroes. Key features of the Underworld included the rivers Acheron, Styx, and Lethe; the three-headed dog Cerberus who guarded the entrance; and the ferryman Charon who transported souls across the rivers. The Furies punished sinners, while figures like Tantalus and Sisyphus were tormented for their deeds in life.
