MY EXPERIENCE OF FIRST DAY AT UNIVERSITY
My universityiswithout doubt the epitome of private universitiesin Kenya, I am singularlygratified of thisopportunity
to be part of thisinstitution which hasmade great stridesto becoming a universityof repute hence earning itself
immortal honor in the social-political arena and the academicfront .In addition to this. The institution embracescultural
diversityas evidenced in the programs offered inter- alia; tourism, International studiesand bachelor of laws. .
My first day at universitywasa combination of awesomenessand a bit confusing. I didn’t know what to wear as my
wardrobe was full of casual outfits yet the universityhas a professional dress code that everyone is expected to conform
with. On a night prior to the material day, I honestly couldn’t sleep. I stayed up all night rehearsingon what to say during
the interview with my faculty administrator tobe.
I woke up early, took breakfast and quickly dashed into my uncle’scar. The car reallylooked gleam and gilt like a
treasure from a pirates wreck. While on the highway, my uncle mistakenly sped in a bid to beat traffic in fact ,were it not
for the lords mercy and his astute nature, we were just about to plunge into a ditch while avoiding a head on collision
with an oncoming saloon car. A nerve jarringordeal.
Upon arrival at the gate, I was meticulously frisked by the fashion corps asit’s the legal dutyof care expected from
competent professionals like them before beinggranted access to the university’s premises. I inquired and submitted all
the necessary documentsrequired at the admissions office before proceeding on to payinga non-refundable interview
fee a thousand Kenyan shillings.
I, together with several other acquaintances were then handed over to the invigilator officiating the test. The lady
possessed both physical and logical feminine characters. To begin with, her hospitable nature wasreally exiting, she had
an American height and her skin wasso delectable promptingone of the intervieweestotell her, “Your face shines
brighter than your future”. A corny and flatteringcompliment.
She took usto Long’onot lab where interviewsfor newbiesare traditionallyheld and I sat calmly waitingfor the
beginners examinations obliviousof the facts that, the test is purelydone on the computer, it’s time restricted and no
calculatorsare allowed .I consulted the invigilator on what to do though the clock had alreadystarted ticking. She gladly
told me how to approach the whole thing.
I wasthen forced to quickly re- orient myself hence allowing me to start and complete the test in forty five minutesof
the one hour given due to myunique abilityto solve mathematical problemswith ease, a skill I earned in high school
while putting the quote that says “Make haywhile the sun shines”into application duringa mathematical contest hosted
by my school.
Upon completion of the test, we were taken to the school’s student center for lunch. To be honest, that was one of the
best meals I have ever had. The aroma mushrooming from the delicacies were very invitingand mouth-wateringnot to
mention the eye-catching exterior of the cooking pots .We enjoyed the memorable ‘feast’, and were later taken in for a
verbal interview with the facultyadministrator.
This was a little bit easy as the questionswere just a confirmation of whether I was indeed ready to conduct myself in
conformity with the university’srulesand regulations. Luckily, it ended well. Since curiosity is wired deep in me, I
quickly searched into my contacts upon completion of the interviewsto try and look for my distant cousin’s number I
was told lecturesat the institution.
I found it and called him immediatelyinforminghim of my successful completion of both interviews, he then came,
greeted and took me to an ongoing colloquium at the institution’s businessschool where he was an invited fellow. While
there I became a little bit neuroticas I had assured mymatesupcountry that I waswithout doubt going to pass on first
attempt.
An hour later, the conference was adjourned and I went back to the admissionsoffice to inquire on the dayI was
supposed to come and collect my admission letter. I then had to take a cub back to the village as my day first daywas
endingand I needed to be back home at or before 9.pm that day. That was an expression of the turn of events that
ensued duringmy first dayat university.
As Martin Luther king, a famous American human rightsactivist and philosopher once said “We may have come on
different ships but we are in the same boat now”.
