A new world wildfires -2021111 for postingJim Dodenhoff
Abstract
From 2018 through 2021, Wildfires have emerged as one of the most destructive and deadly forces impacting energy resiliency around the globe. Dramatic new policy measures have been implemented in different jurisdictions with decidedly mixed results. Even less clear is whether these policy measures will truly ensure safe, reliable, and affordable energy------along with a modicum of reliability. This presentation will provide a detailed overview of the costs of wildfires within a resiliency framework, focusing upon California, Australia and other highly impacted geographic areas. Existing policy responses such as the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program in California will be evaluated for efficacy. Evolving policies will also be reviewed----especially those that hold material potential to mitigate risk. Finally, for those areas with high wildfire risk, electricity market responses in the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector will be explored in detail. To what degree has wildfire risk expedited the shift from centralized utility electricity generation to distributed and/or third-party C&I electricity generation? Has this shift focused upon specific technologies (i.e. storage vs renewables vs fossil fuel generators). The presentation will assess
whether these market shifts are mitigating wildfire risks or simply creating greater complexity and variability.

The damaging impact of bushfires on infrastructure and supply chainsThe Resilience Shift
Headlines from a feature on bushfires and their impact on infrastructure and supply chains. How can we make infrastructure more resilient to such crises.
Electricity is the life blood of Economic development of any country. The success of any country is only possible with the availability of it. The people of Afghanistan desperately need it for their socio economic development. All major polls show that Afghans wants electricity more than anything else.
The decades of war have left the country's infrastructure unfortunately spifflicated as well as the power grid badly damaged so it becomes more difficult to get electricity out there fast by using conventional cheap electricity generation methods.
The provision of renewable energy power plants to Afghan villages is a feasible speedy solution which can provide the electricity in few days with no fuel cost. Sustainable energy can be provided and the dream comes true.
Energy can be provided by the burning fossil fuel but the main drawback associated with it is the unfortunate security issues in the country. So for time being production of energy from renewable such as solar, wind, bio gas seems only the feasible solution.
Firstly, an on grid provision of electricity may be established for Afghans further it may be extended to off grid solution with step by step installation at selected vicinity on the basis of good maintenance of current grid system.

Access to Electricity in Odighi Community in Edo State Using Photo VoltaicOgbemudia Godfrey
The project “Access to Electricity in Odighi Community in Edo State Using Photo Voltaic” has been implemented by the Community Research and Development Centre (CREDC) as part of the PREEEN Project (Promoting Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Nigeria). It was implemented with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Global Environment Facility Small Grant Programme (GEF-SGP) and the Green Grant Fund (GGF). The Project was implemented in Odighi Community located in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, Southern Nigeria.
In Odighi Community before the implementation of this project, the community was not connected to the national electricity grid and thus lacked access to electricity. This forced many of the inhabitants to rely on diesel and petrol generators for electricity supply for those who can afford it and majority of the community people used paraffin lamps and kerosene lanterns for lighting at night. This situation exposed them to various respiratory disease associated with the burning of hydrocarbon based fuel to generate heat and light energy and also increased poverty level as they kept spending more of their household income on unsustainable domestic energy sources.
The objectives of the project were: 1. To increase access to modern energy services (electricity) in Odighi Community using solar generators (Photovoltaic systems). This will enhance access to information, boost educational activities, reduce the incidence of respiratory diseases and discourage the use of traditional energy sources (kerosene lanterns, local paraffin lamps, diesel and petro generators) causing the emission of greenhouse gases leading to climate change. 2. To build capacity in the community to install and maintain photovoltaic system. This will ensure the participation of the community in the proposed project and to empower the community members sustain the project and to become potential employees in the emerging renewable energy industry in Nigeria. 3. To create awareness on the potential for renewable energy technologies (RETs) to address the energy crisis in Nigeria and at the same time mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases.

Our new report explores the great potential in modern renewable energy and analyzes how it can be used to avoid the negative environmental and societal consequences that hydropower can have.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
