<em>"Daddy, daddy, how does a computer work?"</em> We're used to say that curiosity is a bad habit but it is nonetheless one of the greatest strenghts of kids: they are eager to learn. Learn how a computer works, how one can build an application for a phone or a tablet, how one can create a video game. The best answer is probably to give them the tools to discover by themselves the answer to those questions. Eclipse is used by hundreds of thousands of adults for programming activies, so why not by kids? How to turn Eclipse into a programming environment for kids? This talk will present our approach and thoughts to simplify the Eclipse user interface for usage by kids. We will show how we created, thanks to <a>Sirius</a>, an easy-to-use and natural graphical tool to let kids discover programming. A demonstration will present a prototype of a development environment that allows to program an Arduino using a simple and graphical block-based language.

It translates sensor inputs into a GUI programming language and supports toolkits like Arduino and Processing. The goal is to provide a common language for designers, engineers, and students to smoothly prototype physical computing concepts.
Equipment list
A computer, camera, tripod, SD cards, headphones, Microsoft Office suite, Adobe software including Premiere Pro, Audition and Photoshop will be needed for pre-production, production and post-production of the film. A living rabbit will be featured. The budget is £50 but an additional £100 is set aside for potential equipment damages or emergencies. Most of the budget will be used for travel and food for the actors.

Living things are classified into a hierarchy with seven main levels: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Aristotle originally classified living things as either plants or animals, while Linnaeus later classified them based on their structure. Modern classification, like Linnaeus', is based on phylogeny, or the evolutionary history of organisms.
Ruth Sims - Co-design to generate innovative ideas
This talk will discuss a research project undertaken to investigate whether co-design involving end-users (in this case people commuting to and from work) generates more ideas, and more innovative and novel ideas, than email participation only. The work concerned generating ideas to reduce single occupancy car travel on the commute to and from the university campus. Involving people in focus groups, interviews as well as questionnaires was more time-consuming and labour-intensive, but resulted in greater completion of the process and more innovative solutions being generated. Participants involved in the co-design reported finding it very interesting and informative to learn about each other’s commutes, and more importantly, the reasons why people made the commuting decisions that they did.
Matthew Ovington - Snakes and ladders: Trust and motivation in online gaming
The building blocks of online trust are relatively well understood, especially with regard to eCommerce. Brand values, high street retail presence and customer-friendly policies all play a part in establishing trust in our online online gaming products. However, with online casino gaming, where the outcomes of games such as roulette or slots are governed by chance players are rightly sensitive to any real (or imagined!) house advantage. Establishing trust is only part of the solution. Trust must be nurtured in order to develop long and lasting relationships. The aim of this talk is to highlight findings with regard to what things engender feelings of trust and motivation in relation to online gaming.

Paul Dawson - Walking the line: The Role of Product Development.

What brings together a model, a microcontroller and a cat ?
The Arduino Designer ! Last year, we demoed this new modeler which allows kids to easily write programs for Arduino platforms using a visual tool. The purpose of this new talk is to unveil the making-of of this modeler, by detailing how it is possible to quickly develop such a simple dedicated modeler thanks to Sirius.
We’ll start by explaining how to use Sirius to create graphical editors such as the ones provided by the Arduino Designer. Then we’ll see how to simplify the Eclipse UI to keep the minimum useful interactions for an RCP application dedicated to kids. Finally, we’ll discuss how to integrate the modeler with a code generator and how to combine it with the Arduino tools to build and upload software into the Arduino hardware platform.

Arduino Development For Beginners
18/03/2010 - FTS seminar series @ Cardiff Univesity, Computer Science. Pete Woznowski and Rich Coombs one hour presentation on Arduino. Some info on Arduino and the talk: Arduino is a hardware and software platform for developing electronic devices and applications, aimed at being fun and accessible to everyone. Think Lego Mindstorms, but aimed intentionally at adults (rather than aimed at children and incidentally used by adults :)). The scope and potential for Arduino is huge. It has been used to develop simple applications like pedometers and networked environmental sensors, to art exhibits and remote controlled vehicles. The talk aims to give an overview of the Arduino platform and a brief introduction to designing and programming Arduino applications, along with some demonstrations.

18/03/2010 - FTS seminar series @ Cardiff Univesity, Computer Science. Pete Woznowski and Rich Coombs one hour presentation on Arduino. Some info on Arduino and the talk: Arduino is a hardware and software platform for developing electronic devices and applications, aimed at being fun and accessible to everyone. Think Lego Mindstorms, but aimed intentionally at adults (rather than aimed at children and incidentally used by adults :)). The scope and potential for Arduino is huge. It has been used to develop simple applications like pedometers and networked environmental sensors, to art exhibits and remote controlled vehicles. The talk aims to give an overview of the Arduino platform and a brief introduction to designing and programming Arduino applications, along with some demonstrations.

Obeo Cloud Platform (OCP) is the Cloud-based solution developed by Obeo for deploying modeling tools on the web.
With OCP, modeling tools developed with Sirius can be installed on a Cloud server and are rendered in a web browser.

Éditer graphiquement des données structurées permet de mieux appréhender des aspects tels que les relations entre certaines données, les imbrications sur plusieurs niveaux, mais aussi identifier plus facilement certaines caractéristiques grâce à des informations visuelles (taille, couleur, forme, icônes, …). Mais pour fournir ce type d’expérience utilisateur, développer des éditeurs graphiques web au-dessus d’un domaine spécifique (DSL) reste une tâche complexe. Sirius Web est un nouveau projet open-source dans la fondation Eclipse, sur des bases full web, qui simplifie la définition des concepts du domaine, la création des éditeurs graphiques, et le déploiement auprès des utilisateurs. We will present the evolution of Eclipse Sirius: the easiest way to get your own modeling tool, and soon to even deploy it on the cloud!
Sirius is a well-established Eclipse project to create graphical modeling workbenches as quick as a flash. The technology has been used in production for more than 10 years and led to the creation of an impressive number of graphical modelers. The Sirius website gallery demonstrates 45 of those workbenches recorded over the years and a new era is starting now that we can such deploy tools on the web.
During this talk we will present :
how to define your domain based on EMF and Ecore,
how to use Sirius to specify a tooling composed of graphical modelers, trees and form based editors in a glimpse,
how your tooling look and behave in Eclipse RCP,

The journey of building developer tooling has never been as exciting as it is right now. Eclipse Che is getting more and more mature, bringing collaboration and teams capabilities for developer workspaces. Theia, integrated in Eclipse Che, is providing the foundations for a modern and extensible web IDE. With the rise of cloud development platforms, we see the industry defining new server protocols, such as "Language Server Protocol" and "Debug Server Protocol" which allow to bring tooling on a wide range of platforms, such as Eclipse, Eclipse Che and VS Code.
During this session, we will discuss about the future of development tooling, we will briefly review the progresses made over the last years and where the community is moving towards. We will discuss how "Server Protocols" are allowing to bring our tools on different platforms and environments which can run on the cloud or locally. To illustrate the discussion, we will take few examples: The JDT Language Server, the Debug Adapter Protocol implementation in Theia and the Graphical Server Protocol initiated during the journey of bringing Sirius to the cloud.

ETR2013 - Obeo Designer/Sirius
Obeo is a strategic member of the Eclipse Foundation that provides modeling tools like Obeo Designer and Obeo SmartEA based on Eclipse technologies. Sirius, an open source tool for defining domain-specific modeling languages, was released as an Eclipse project in 2013. Sirius allows non-experts to quickly create customized modeling workbenches with dedicated views and representations for their domain. It has been adopted by Thales and Obeo to build workbenches for domains like systems engineering, enterprise architecture, and more. Future work includes unifying heterogeneous modeling languages through Sirius as part of the Gemoc Initiative.

EclipseCon Eu 2012 - Build your own System Engineering workbench

It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community.
