SIFE EcoActive is a student initiative at UNSW led by Ricky Cheng that is working on sustainability projects. The group has 6 key members studying fields related to sustainability. They created SIFE EcoActive to address serious sustainability issues and engage individuals to make a difference because relying solely on governments is not enough. Their current projects include making building resource recommendations to turn inefficient buildings green and labeling local seasonal food to promote sustainable purchasing. The group operates with creativity, passion, energy, and fast pacing to foster leadership skills while thinking big, green, and solutions oriented.

Maidan – Revolution of Dignity
I packed my bag and went on Maidan. For three month.
This is the main core of Revolution. As you see there is no cosy houses, no water, no toilets, no kitchen. Just plane concrete basement.
In first week we build our new home. God, self-organization and hope helped us.
We stood against gunned man, weather, hunger, fake news for our rights and freedom.
We have only social networks, social media and feeling that we doing it right together. We constantly exchanged food, wear and information. So effective, that we stayed for 3 month and win first battle.
How its possible? And how it worked?
If I needed something – I just posted advertisement about needs on my tent or in social network. And after a while I got what I needed from inside or outside Maidan.
Why? Because I did something important for people around when someone needed my help.
Now I will share with you main experience – shared economy works for defending us in hardest situations!

So, after Maidan I started thinking about some possibility to bring such level interaction, as Ukraine experienced in time of Revolution of Dignity on hight scale and help my country and the world.
How we can use this to stand against climate changes, hunger and poverty?
We actually live in time of abundance – we have resources, we have technologies, we have educated people, good transportation.
All off us have some ideas, desires and projects. At the same time we have some unused free resources, tools and parts that just standing idle on our backyard.
We need only one component – a system that combines the idea of one person with free unused resource of another.
I thought about new resource sharing system where we can co-planing and co-building projects together in real time.
Then spread request for the parts of this projects in social network. System will bring people and resources together via hashtags and messages.
So, I want to connect in this system google maps, blockchain, object oriented principles of programming and neural network.
Benefit
Prevents pollution caused by reducing the need to harvest new raw materials
Saves energy
Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
Helps sustain the environment for future generations
Saves money
Reduces the amount of waste that will need to be recycled or sent to landfills and incinerators
Allows products to be used to their fullest extent
People of Ukraine give humanity the example of self-organization and support each other in the face of threats.
My mission is - to create a technical solution based on these principles, so help me with your resources and information to create it.

Around the world, Citizen Engineers are making a real difference inimproving the quality of life. Some are working in the companies youpass by every day, making a difference in the products that we use in
our daily routines. Others are applying their passion and expertise to solving
fundamental problems that people face. As a conclusion to this book we
thought we’d highlight a few inspiring examples of the kinds of things real-
world Citizen Engineers are working on today.
Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a nonprofit humanitarian organization,
is partnering with developing communities worldwide in order to improve
their quality of life. This partnership focuses on the implementation of sus-
tainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally
responsible engineers and engineering students. Here are just a few of their
recent projects.
• In Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh, the student-teacher duo of Niruttam
Kumar Singh and Harvansh Yadav have made a cow dung battery
that lights up electric bulbs, charges mobile phones, and brings alive
radios.2
• Undergraduate engineering students are currently building a bridge
across a gorge in a small town in Nicaragua. The students have sur-
veyed the entire project site and are now in the process of designing a
bridge to span the gorge and allow for pedestrian travel during the
rainy season.3
• Thousands of residents of rural villages in India are receiving quality
eye care thanks to a collaborative effort between an Indian hospital

network and the researchers at the University of California, Berkeley,
and at Intel Corporation who have developed a new technology for
low-cost rural connectivity.4
• Engineers at PlayPumps International designed the PlayPump5 water
system, which provides easy access to clean drinking water, brings joy
to children, and leads to improvements in health, education, gender
equality, and economic development. Installed near schools, the
PlayPump system doubles as a water pump and a merry-go-round. It
also provides a way to reach rural and peri-urban communities with
potentially life-saving public health messages.
In Panama, students and researchers are using small wireless sensors to
help answer big environmental questions. Warren Wilson College and CREA,
a nonprofit organization in Panama, are implementing a geographic informa-
tion system (GIS) and wireless sensor network on the 1,000-acre Cocobolo
Nature Reserve in Panama. Tiny Sun SPOT sensors6 will provide an inexpen-
sive, easy-to-program platform for monitoring all kinds of things: the impac.
Vertical Gardens [CommOrg2013]
This document outlines a campaign to install vertical gardens on buildings at Warren Wilson College. It identifies that many buildings are old and energy inefficient, and past efforts to increase efficiency were unnoticed or unfinished. Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a nonprofit humanitarian organization,
is partnering with developing communities worldwide in order to improve
their quality of life. This partnership focuses on the implementation of sus-
tainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally
responsible engineers and engineering students. Here are just a few of their
recent projects.
• In Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh, the student-teacher duo of Niruttam
Kumar Singh and Harvansh Yadav have made a cow dung battery
that lights up electric bulbs, charges mobile phones, and brings alive
radios.2
• Undergraduate engineering students are currently building a bridge
across a gorge in a small town in Nicaragua. The students have sur-
veyed the entire project site and are now in the process of designing a
bridge to span the gorge and allow for pedestrian travel during the
rainy season.3
• Thousands of residents of rural villages in India are receiving quality
eye care thanks to a collaborative effort between an Indian hospital

network and the researchers at the University of California, Berkeley,
and at Intel Corporation who have developed a new technology for
low-cost rural connectivity.4
• Engineers at PlayPumps International designed the PlayPump5 water
system, which provides easy access to clean drinking water, brings joy
to children, and leads to improvements in health, education, gender
equality, and economic development. Installed near schools, the
PlayPump system doubles as a water pump and a merry-go-round. It
also provides a way to reach rural and peri-urban communities with
potentially life-saving public health messages.
In Panama, students and researchers are using small wireless sensors to
help answer big environmental questions. Warren Wilson College and CREA,
a nonprofit organization in Panama, are implementing a geographic informa-
tion system (GIS) and wireless sensor network on the 1,000-acre Cocobolo
Nature Reserve in Panama. Tiny Sun SPOT sensors6 will provide an inexpen-
sive, easy-to-program platform for monitoring all kinds of things: the impac.
Vertical Gardens [CommOrg2013]
This document outlines a campaign to install vertical gardens on buildings at Warren Wilson College. It identifies that many buildings are old and energy inefficient, and past efforts to increase efficiency were unnoticed or unfinished. A vertical garden campaign would be student-led, creative, beautiful, and inspire environmental stewardship. Initial research looked at examples by Patrick Blanc and determined vertical gardens would insulate buildings, be very visible, involve no roof safety hazards, and allow for student involvement. COTE Top Ten: Intelligent Design for a Restorative Future

The jury was impressed by the projects' mastery of design and environmental performance.

Visioning Workshop
