CONCLUSION
3. DEFINITION OF ECLECTIC APPROACH
Eclectic method is a language
teaching method that
combines various approaches
and methods to teach
language depending on the
objectives of the course and
the abilities of the learners. It
is also known as mixed-
methods. This method was
first used in 1920s-1930s by
English linguists (Henry
Sweet and Harold Palmer).
The Eclectic Approach is the one that integrates all the language-teaching methods
depending on the classroom circumstances and the abilities of the learners. The
Eclectic Approach was advocated as almost all the individual methods had their
strengths and weaknesses and not even a single method was responsible to the real
and dynamic classroom context. Taking the drawbacks of the various methods into
consideration, Brown (2002) argues that eclecticism finds the right solution as this
approach permits the teacher to select what works well in their classrooms within
their own dynamic contexts. Even Gilliland, James and Bowman (1994) declared
that the justification to adopt the Eclectic Approach lies in the single method or
approach because a single method or approach has a narrow theoretical basis and
has a fixed set of activities and hence it is inflexible.
4. PRINCIPLED OF
Eclectic approach contains the following principles :
1. Giving teachers a chance to choose different
kinds of teaching techniques in each class period to
reach the aims of the lesson.
2. Flexibility in choosing any aspect or method that
teachers think suitable for teaching inside the
classroom.
3. Giving a chance to pupils to see different kinds of
teachingtechniques that break monotony and dull
,on one hand, andensure better understanding for
the material, on the other hand.
4. Solving difficulties concerning presenting the
languagematerial in the pupil's textbook.
5. Using different kinds of teaching aids which leads
to betterunderstanding,
6. Saving a lot of time and effort in presenting
language activities.
5. According to Weidman (2001:2), “The Eclectic
Approach has been widely accepted in English
classrooms that many good teachers today use it
proudly as a tag to describe to their teaching,
wearing it almost like a badge of honour” EA
focuses on motivation and learner autonomy,
selecting techniques based on the learner and
context.
-The Eclectic Approach is the juxtaposition of both
the inductive and deductive strategy to teaching
languages.-
-The concept of the Eclectic Approach is that
learners learn not only from teachers but also from
fellow learners by working together or as a group.
The features of this method include multiple tasks,
lively learning, high interaction, objective
correlative and fast results.
-This approach connects life experiences to the
ideas presented in learning the language.
CONCEPT OF ECLECTIC
APPROACH
6. CHARACTERISTIC OF ECLECTIC APPROACH
Characteristics of the eclectic
method.This technique requires a
curriculum that is creative, innovative, and
imaginative. This approach is broad and
may include every kind of learning activity
and saves learners from monotony. It is
more appropriate for Pre School learning
but not less beneficial in the class rooms.
It is helpful in all kinds of skills in
stimulating a creative environment and
gives confidence to the learners. In this
approach children discovers and instill
good ways of learning. It keeps student
involved in the learning without stress and
fears.
The main characteristic of this approach is variety in
adapting methodology and technique to gain the main aim
of teaching goal .Also by adapting such method or theory in
teaching (variety) it makes class atmosphere dynamic and
drop monotony idea. Other advantage or characteristic is
no aspect of language skill ignored . (Crandal,2003)[10]
"these types of programs not only negotiate teacher skill-
development within an improved recognition of and respect
for cross-cultural and multilinguistic classroom settings , but
also encourage student pride in their heritage, language,
communication. (Alizadeh & et al ,2016)[11] states that
different teaching methods are borrowed and adopted to
suit the requirement of the learners. It breaks the monotony
of the class. In addition , it is conceptual approach that does
not merely include one paradigm or a set of assumptions.
Such variety and combinations of methods and techniques
which are used in this method it maintain keeping the
learning process interesting and no boring can be touched
during the whole learning and teaching process to gain the
main object of the class. Then communicative competence
will be developed in a unique way.
7. ROLES OF THE TEACHER AND LEARNER ACCORDING TO THE ECLECTIC
METHOD
The roles of teachers are going to depend on the
different methods she/he uses in the classes. First
of all, teachers have to identify the strengths and
weaknesses of their students; then based on that,
they have to design classes and activities, which
adapt to their students’ needs. So, taken into
account this, the roles of the teacher is going to be
acting as an observer, designer, planner, guider,
facilitator and entertainer; which uses his authority to
conduct the class and make the process of teaching
and learning systematic. By contrast, the role of the
learner is going to be demonstrating their knowledge
and understanding, skills, attributes and capabilities
through their participation in teaching/learning
activities; and be cooperative and communicative
with each other
8. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTADES
Safety: The use of a variety of
ideas and procedures from
different existing approaches and
methods will increasethe chances
of learning taking place.
Interest: Teachers need to use
different techniques to hold the
learners' attention.
Diversity: Different
learning/teaching contexts require
different methodologies.
Flexibility: Awareness of a range
of available techniques. will help
teachers exploit materials better
and manage unexpected
situations. Informed teaching is
bound to be eclectic.approaches

Teaching
It does not lend itself to
prediction and control of
behaviour.
It's difficult to identify the
relative contributions of each
approach.
Explanation of behaviour may
become "watered down" when
combining many perspectives.
There are practical difficulties
in investigating the integration of
the approaches.
9. The eclectic approach is safe thanks to the use of variety ideas and
procedures from different existing approaches and methods, which it will
increase the chances of learning taking place. This approach has interest
involves, since teachers need to use different techniques to hold the
learners' attention.
The findings revealed that eclectic learning approach has a positive effect
on students' academic achievement in English at tertiary level. Eclectic
approach was found more rewarding, effective and productive in teaching
English as compared to traditional learning approach at tertiary level as the
teachers modify their teaching style according to the situation and need of
students in eclectic learning approach.
