This health education handbook was written in January, 2015 during the hot outbreak of Ebola in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The aim was to Educate Children about the disease especially about what to do to prevent the spread of Ebola during the outbreak. The Author was among the African Union Response Volunteers (Public Health) under the African Union ASEOWA.

This handbook is written during the Ebola
Outbreak in Sierra Leone to educate the
children in support to the on-going
Implementation of the National Ebola
Response Plan in Sierra Leone.

16. Do not discriminate against the people
who survived Ebola.
EBOLA SURVIVORS ARE LIKE YOU . . .
Once Ebola patients recover and are
discharged from Ebola Treatment Centre,
they can no longer spread the virus by sitting
or playing with them. It is safe to touch them.
They can resume their normal school activities
as any other child or student.
People who have been in contact with Ebola
patients and do not develop the symptoms
after the monitoring period of 21 days is over,
are also Ebola free. They cannot give you
Ebola but always wash your hand when you
touch anybody.

18. About the Author
Mr Bakare Waheed Ariyo is a graduate of Microbiology and also had his Post
Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from Nigeria. He got his Masters
Degree in Environmental Management from the United Kingdom. He has
worked for over 5 years at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)
before he moved to African Union Commission under the African Union
Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA) in 2014 as Volunteer
(secondment). In 2013, he was one of the National Committee that
developed National Teachers Manual for Emergency Response in Nigeria
and also the Student Handbook on Emergency Response in Nigeria in 2014 in
collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, Nigeria. He has
undergone several trainings and certificate courses on Emergency
Management, Infectious Disease Prevention and Control, Epidemiology as
well as Leadership. He has been actively involved as Public Health Officer in
the Implementation of the National Ebola Response Plan in Bombali District,
Sierra Leone since December, 2014 under the AU ASEOWA. Currently, he
serves as IPC focal person under the AU ASEOWA Sierra Leone.
