When planning long-haul travel, several factors can affect destination selection including seasonality, climate conditions, entry requirements, travel restrictions, health issues, and social concerns. Travelers must consider a destination's climate and seasonal variations to avoid locations during extreme weather. Entry requirements like visas and vaccinations can take time to acquire and add costs. Travel advisories inform travelers of safety risks like terrorism or disease outbreaks that could lead to restricted travel or cancellations. Health issues may require vaccinations or prevent travel during pandemics. Poverty or exploitation at destinations could disincline travelers for ethical reasons. These many factors all have the potential to significantly impact travelers' choices of long-haul destinations.

This document provides an updated risk assessment of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa as of July 31, 2014. It summarizes that the outbreak remains uncontrolled with over 1,300 reported cases across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. While the risk to the UK is still considered very low, the increasing case numbers and geographical spread may increase risks to UK citizens involved in humanitarian aid efforts in the affected areas. The UK has a high-level response coordinated across government departments to monitor and respond to any potential imported cases.
The document discusses the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which has become one of the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreaks in history. As of August 28, 2014, the WHO reported over 3,000 cases and 1,500 deaths across five countries - Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The outbreak is caused by the Zaire species of the Ebola virus, which is closely related to variants found in previous outbreaks in Central Africa. Fruit bats are believed to be the natural reservoir of the virus, which can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animal hosts like chimpanzees.
The outbreak is accelerating, with 40% of total cases occurring in the last 3 weeks. The WHO predicts that without control measures, cases could grow to over 20,000 by the end of the outbreak.

Nigeria was able to successfully control its Ebola outbreak through the following actions:
1) It tracked all confirmed Ebola cases and their contacts, placing many under surveillance and monitoring their health.
2) Those who were infected but recovered were isolated in treatment centers and cared for until they were disease free.
3) Officials provided frequent status updates to the public on the number of cases, deaths, recoveries, and those under monitoring to combat the spread of misinformation.
4) Through meticulous tracking and isolation efforts, Nigeria was ultimately able to contain the outbreak from spreading further within its borders.
This document provides an overview and summary of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa:
- The death toll has risen above 600 with cases reported in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The outbreak is described as the worst in history and is out of control.
- Ebola is transmitted through contact with infected body fluids and has a high fatality rate. There is no vaccine and treatment is limited to supportive care.
- The World Health Organization and aid groups are struggling to contain the epidemic due to lack of resources, hostility in some communities, and the virus's wide geographic spread. Foreign companies are advised to avoid non-essential travel to affected areas.
This document provides an overview of the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa as of April 18, 2014. It summarizes the situation in Guinea and Liberia, where confirmed Ebola cases have been reported. In Guinea, there have been a total of 197 clinical cases and 122 deaths reported. In Liberia, there have been 27 clinical cases and 13 deaths reported. The response has included contact tracing, case isolation and management, training for health workers, and social mobilization efforts. Challenges include limited health resources, infection control issues, and the need to improve community awareness as the outbreak continues.
The document summarizes the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the deadliest in history. It describes the origins and spread of the virus in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. It discusses factors that contributed to the rapid spread such as weak healthcare systems, cultural burial practices, and a slow international response. Critics argue the IMF, local governments, and WHO failed to adequately address the crisis in its early stages. Over 28,000 cases and 11,000 deaths were reported before the outbreak was declared over in 2016.

This document provides summaries of multiple reports on the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa between August and September 2014. It discusses encouraging signs in Nigeria and Guinea with slowing transmission, challenges in Liberia requiring non-conventional interventions, the unprecedented number of infected medical staff, and experimental therapies using blood from recovered patients showing interest.
The Ebola outbreak in West Africa poses risks to the energy industry operating in the region. International SOS advises non-essential travel be deferred to Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. For those who must travel, they recommend avoiding contact with sick individuals, not attending funerals or eating bush meat, and practicing strict hygiene. Energy companies need to take action to minimize risks to employees, such as providing protective equipment, screening, travel restrictions, or evacuations from the region. So far there have been no confirmed cases among travelers returning home, though some have shown Ebola-like symptoms.
Fighting Against Ebola: Public Health and NepalMMC, IOM, Nepal
Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness in humans that was first identified in 1976. The current 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa was the largest in history. While supportive care can improve survival rates, there are currently no licensed vaccines or treatments for Ebola. Approximately 3,000-5,000 Nepalese citizens work in the affected regions of West Africa, placing Nepal at risk of an outbreak. However, Nepal is ill-prepared to handle Ebola cases, as its airports lack proper screening and designated treatment hospitals lack necessary resources and isolation facilities. Some experts argue that market incentives have led to a lack of Ebola research by pharmaceutical companies, as the disease primarily affects poor regions of Africa
Nigeria was able to defeat the Ebola virus through a combination of proactive measures, including issuing early warnings, establishing emergency response centers, conducting extensive public education campaigns, and effectively tracking and quarantining individuals exposed to the virus. The first case was introduced by a traveler from Liberia, and Nigeria ultimately saw 19 total cases and 7 deaths before being declared Ebola-free within 3 months. Key factors in Nigeria's successful response included national unity in fighting the disease, stringent preventive measures adopted by the public, and the country's isolated treatment method for each Ebola symptom.

Uncertainty and change will likely dominate the post-pandemic world of travel. While security and
terrorism have been constant concerns for tourists, broader issues of personal safety, risk and crime will
understandably infuse travel decision making in the wake of COVID-19. This chapter explores the
multitude of definitions and expressions that make direct comparisons of security between places
exceptionally difficult. In this chapter, context, hyper-specific location, travel security and crime
prevention techniques are introduced. The chapter also explores the relationships and overlaps of
international security, safety, terrorism, crime and risk. Complete with a series of systematic literature
reviews specific to each sub-topic, large data sets, expert analysis and evidence-based decision making,
this chapter offers practical tips for travellers at all levels of experience. The curated, practical advice will
empower tourists to contribute to their own personal security by better understanding the complexities
summed up with simple, practical guidance no matter where they venture. Overall, the consolidated
security and terrorism work within this chapter presents an updated base for tourists and the travel
industry to relaunch travel in the wake of one of the world’s most significant travel disruptions. Tourists
should be better informed and equipped for new travel challenges and adventures.
Throughout, and in the wake of a global pandemic, many countries have re-evaluated what exactly constitutes critical infrastructure and the importance of this infrastructure or systems of state/national significance. This reflection has also reconsidered exactly what critical infrastructure, facilities or systems of national significance mean to the country, community, and national security. Australia is no exception. However, not only has Australia informally re-evaluated the nature and status of its critical infrastructure but it has also broadened both the definition and legislation mandating greater security and risk management.
The context and impact of Australia’s reflexive security risk management actions and legislation have yet to be considered in full, especially as it relates to public/private security, and more importantly enterprise security risk management. That is, aside from the considerable change in critical infrastructure legislation, what does it mean for the information, knowledge and practice of security management and risk management within an organisational, infrastructure context? More specifically, when and where security and risk are conjoined as siloed functions? As a result, this discussion and information paper seeks to introduce the topic of critical infrastructure and systems of national significance as a contemporary challenge or mature consideration for security and/or risk management practices.
While focused on Australia primarily, the critical infrastructure discourse has security risk management implications for most countries and jurisdictions. This paper explores global opinions, prior research and explicit public security guidance from national agencies and authorities about security risk management and critical infrastructure. It is therefore hoped, this initial summary and supporting observations spawns and supports a new age of security and risk sciences within the protection and resilience of critical infrastructure, systems of national significance and enterprise security risk management.
This information and discussion presentation offers the first step in unpacking and understanding the change, requirements and demands of security and risk management practices and processes within the critical infrastructure and systems of national significance. Moreover, this presentation explores the technical and professional nuances of security management and risk management and how it is inadequately defined or communicated in legislation and practice. Posing the greatest question for governments, operators, and security/risk practitioners. Security for who, when, how, to what standard and in what context? In addition to the reality that if ‘risk’ management was inadequate and unable to self-regulate or evolve to face the evolving and changing threats, what changed? In short, changing laws, rules and expectations fails to raise the bar of security and risk management practices without a commensurate increase in the underlying information, knowledge, education and experience of security and risk representatives. This deficit will not be corrected nor rectified overnight, with the subsequent ‘gap’ likely evident for years after the new threat and legislation. For now, the current individual and collective risk profile is likely that of fragility and vulnerability, not resilience, with the greatest liability that of humans, not infrastructure.
Travel risk ratings: The risk is not the advance forecast, it is the reckless and negligent recalibration once events become past, past becomes data and data become evidence. It is the proof of specific, contextual numbers that makes drunk driving, untested medicines and random guesses SAFER than travel risk ratings because before the event and data was uncertainty, after the accumulation of numbers, there is a certainty.
The document discusses research on the relationship between media, terrorism, and risk perception. It provides summaries of several academic sources that cover topics such as:
1. How social media provides opportunities for terrorists but algorithms alone do not shape communication.
2. Exposure to terrorism news increases perceived risk but not self-risk, and understanding how risk perceptions are shaped is important.
