Learning Japanese Kanji: How Technology Can Help the Brain outParisa Mehran
Learning Kanji as a major obstacle to mastering Japanese is evident to any learner from a non-Kanji background including the presenters. In this poster, mainstream Kanji teaching methods and learning strategies such as repetition, association, and visualization will first be reviewed. Then, the facilitating use of technology in retaining Kanji will be explored. Following that, several Kanji iOS and web-based applications (e.g., Perfect Master Kanji, Anki, WaniKani, and KanjiPictoGraphix) will be demonstrated to analyze the pedagogical methods and approaches behind them and the extent to which the developers of these applications have taken brain research into account. Finally, the use of mnemonics as one of the most effective methods in learning Kanji will also be explicated while referring to the ease of storing visual information in the brain.
AN EXERCISE for learning meanings and key vocab in Chapter 10 of "Genki, An Integrated Course of Elementary Japanese." Includes relevant photos to associate with each Kanji and aid in memorization.
A WORD ON THE CHARACTERS USED WITHIN
This was made using Haiku Deck; the Japanese fonts are unpredictable and sometimes look more like Chinese characters then Japanese. So students, please beware of this and do not try to copy the form of these Kanji when writing; always follow the instructions of your teachers and textbooks regarding the handwritten forms of Kanji and Kana--they are often different than what you see in print.
READINGS USED WITHIN
Kanji introduced in Genki Ch 10, and covered in this slideshow, include onyomi & kunyomi readings, as well as "special readings" (such as ateji and jukujikun). This slideshow includes a bit of all of the above. Let me know if you have any questions about the readings in the words included in this slideshow.
THE PHOTO on the first and last slide shows the remains of the 1815 Aurora Steam Grist Mill, behind the historic Aurora Inn, a property that until recently was owned by Wells College in Aurora, NY, U.S.A.
Enjoy!

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
