The earth has two movements: rotation, which is its daily motion on its axis completing every 24 hours and causing day and night, and revolution, which is its elliptical orbit around the sun over the course of a year (365 1/4 days) causing the four seasons and changing distance between the earth and sun. Leap years have an extra day in February to account for the quarter day difference between the calendar year and solar year.
