If an earthquake hits….What should you do? If you are indoors, stay indoors. You do not want to run outdoors because you may be hit by falling items such as power lines, light poles, or items from falling buildings (especially if you are in a non-residential area).
During an earthquake, you should follow the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” procedure. Duck and look for cover. Cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold onto the table or desk leg until the shaking stops. If the table or desk moves…hang onto it and move with it.
If you are indoors during an earthquake you should stay away from the windows because they could break you would be subjected to flying glass. Stay away from tall objects which may topple over and pin you down. Watch for falling objects.

If you are in an elevator during an earthquake, you should not panic. Elevators have inter-locking systems so the elevator will stop and will lock in place. It will not fall down the shaft. Some elevators are designed to actually go to the nearest floor and then lock. That way you would not be stuck between floors. It is possible for the elevator to lose power – So the lights may go out. You should use the emergency alarm in the elevator. Wait for the emergency crew to arrive and follow directions.
