Ronald James Smith kept a diary during his 91-day voyage from England to New Zealand aboard the Randolph in 1835. His entries describe the cramped and unsanitary conditions onboard, an outbreak of flu that killed 15 people, including the chef, and spotting other ships and wildlife along the journey. Upon arriving in New Zealand, Ronald was reunited with his family who traveled on the Cressy, and they worked to establish a homestead, having a house built for themselves in their new country.
