Upon arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, Brigham Young declared "This is the place!" after his sick wagon. The Mormon pioneers worked to farm the land but one year crickets threatened their harvest until seagulls, summoned by prayer, ate the crickets and saved the crops. The pioneers also discovered a hot spring that provided healing properties to those who bathed there. Brigham Young led the pioneers with a stern hand and gave chats to encourage improvement.

3. Arrival in the Valley
 As the saints approached Salt Lake Valley, so the story goes, Brigham Young,
who had been sick with mountain fever, said “can you see a valley?” His wives
responded yes. Then he got out of his wagon, looked out over the valley and
exclaimed, “This is the place!”

4. Folk Stories: The Seagulls and the
Crickets
 When Mormon Pioneers first entered the Salt Lake Valley, they had to adapt to
the harsh environment. They learned to farm the land and grow a bounteous
crop. One year crickets infested their fields and devoured their grain. The
Saints prayed and the Lord sent seagulls to eat the crickets. Their harvest was
saved and they thanked the Lord.

5. The Hot Springs
 Saints in Salt Lake Valley discovered a hot spring up a canyon and found that
it held healing qualities. Sick and afflicted would travel up to this spring
where they would bathe and feel its rejuvenating power.

6. Brigham Young
 Brigham Young was a stern man that set the Saints straight when they
waivered. He held chats where he would tell the Saints how they needed to
improve.
