1. SMART HOME FACILITY
The idea provides a fully multi-functional, controlled
Home Automation System.

2. Global home automation market is
estimated to grow from USD 16, 879.9
million in 2011 to USD 47,378.2 million
in 2018 at a CAGR of 15.8% from 2011
to 2018.
In India, it is expected to grow at a
CAGR of 30% over the 5 years till 2016.
2
To fuel India's growth and rapidly expanding industrial production,
productivity and quality improvement are essential. This makes
modernization and automation essential.
With applications such as security, lighting and energy
management likely to play an important role in achieving this
significant growth rate.
3.
4. But the idea of giving them interoperability using a common “language”, or
intergrating different modules brings a new concept of a home network full of
possibilities.
• 24 hour surveillance over property.
• Motion detector
• Night lamps for elderly people and children
guide their way during night.
• Automatic Sprinklers save laborious work.
• Automatic outdoor lights switch on when it
gets dark and off at dawn.
• Gas leak sensor and Water overflow sensor
help to keep check.
• Automatic Garage door
• Video intercom.
• By development of standard-
based technologies that can be
integrated into existing
communications/utility
infrastructure of modern
homes, will result in lower cost
systems that eliminate the
need for bulky hardware and
cabling.
• Our objective is to develop this
system using Open Source.
Homeland security
Accessibility
Energy saving
Convenience
5. We choose different control systems on the basis of
necessity and relevance :
• Outdoor Lighting and Night lamps
- Outdoor lights switch on and off automatically when its dusk and
dawn break respectively.
• Automatic Garage Door Opener
- Using Number Plate Recognition System – Camera recognizes the
owner’s car number plate before opening the garage door.
• Automatic Sprinklers
- Sprinklers get on and off automatically by sensing
the soil humidity and temperature.
• Security and Surveillance
- Front door Camera, Motion Detector security.
• Air Conditioner control
- Control A.C from a remote controller from any distance.
6. BeagleBoard-xm: The USB-powered BeagleBoard is a low-cost, fan-less single
board computer/CPU that unleashes laptop-like performance and expandability
without the bulk, expense, or noise of typical desktop machines.
Arduino: Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform
based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software.
Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of
sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other
actuators.
ZigBee: ZigBee is a specification for a suite of high level communication
protocols (wireless) used to create personal area networks built from small,
low-power digital radios.
We interface each individual the automatic hardware to the
Beagleboard via Hi-speed Communication protocols like Ethernet,
Zigbee wireless module.
Linux: Linux is an Open Soure Operating system. We build control applications
on this platform which will act as the User Interface. To make handling user-
friendly we interface Beagleboard with a Touchscreen.
7. Garden sprinklers
Lighting control:
- Whole house
- Outdoors
- Night
emergency
Air conditioner control
• Automatic dustbin
• Gas leakage &
water overflow control
• Intercomm
• Multi room audio
• Code based door lock system

8. 1. Beagleboard development
We boot linux/ubuntu image over
the beagleboard.
Using various Open source tools, we
Create User applications in linux using
C/C++.
For communication among the
Control modules, Zigbee and Ethernet
Is used. They provide high-speed
Communiation.
2. Hardware development
To run hardwares, like sprinkler valve
Control and Garge door motor, we use
ARDUINO micro-controller.
Methodology
9. 3. Integration :
• Each hardware control unit i.e Garage door Lighting
Sprinkler Security Camera
• Is then integrated to the Beagleboard via communication protocols,
Ethernet and Zigbee.
• Beagleboard has a very fast processor to give us results in real –time.
• Overall capital required to build the prototype – 40,000 INR
• Cost involves:-
Beagleboard + Touchscreen
Arduino, Hardwares (garage shutter material, Sprinklers, motors)
10. - Household activities become
Easier and nothing much to worry
about.
- Homeland Security is an issue of
great importance. Home Automation
takes care of property while the owner
is away.
-
- Generates employment.
It speeds up the developmental
processes of the society.
- Check on Energy
consumption.
- Distance reduction
through technological
advancements in the
field of
communication
network.
- Affordability -
building
this system using
Open Source will bring
the cost down.
Impact
11. Relevancy & Cost :
• Not all the systems are relevant
for all households in India.
Although, we aim at engulfing as
many modules like Pool & Spa,
media entertainment related
systems keeping cost and
demand in mind.
• Presently, the cost of Home
automation Products is very
high. We aim at making Home
Automation accessible to middle
class as well.
• Study of site : stand-alone
houses, apartment, office
• User-friendly interface:
The system must not be
difficult for the consumer
to operate on.
• Durability: The system must
be flexible to meet demands
for its expansion when the
site is altered in future.
• Reliable: Fool-proof motion
detection security and
surveillance.
