8. KeyStory Elements Conflict External Character vs. Character Character vs. Environment, Society, or Circumstances Internal Character vs. Self
9. Key Story Elements Foreshadowing The hints or clues the writer places throughout the story that hint at the story’s outcome. These help to create suspense and dramatic irony (sometimes the reader knows more than the character)
10. Key Story Elements Theme The writer’s view about people in general. Ex: Given the opportunity, people will lie and cheat. OR: Sometimes people do crazy things to make themselves feel young. OR: Growing up is a painful experience, but one we all learn from. Theme is usually related to the main conflict in the story and its outcome , especially the effect on the protagonist. When explaining a story’s theme, you should be able to point to events and details in the story that develop that theme.
11. Short Story Review Each student will have a home group A, B, or C. Each student will have a “story” group: 1, 2, 3, or 4. Once you know your home group, I will ask you to meet with your story group.

When I tell you, you will move back to your home groups and take turns sharing your notes (extra handouts will be provided for you to make notes on each story.)
