Dyslexia AI Workshop for Slideshare.pptx
1. Using AI to support
learners with dyslexia
Overview: explore some examples of AI that
can be used to support learners with reading
and writing difficulties, arising from dyslexia,
e.g.,
AI in popular technologies
AI spelling checkers
Make the most of Microsoft CoPilot to
improve voice typing and spelling accuracy
'Google Lens' and 'Live Text' to extract text
from images

2. What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial intelligence, or AI, is technology that enables
computers and machines to simulate human
intelligence and problem-solving capabilities.
On its own or combined with other technologies (e.g.,
sensors, geolocation, robotics) AI can perform tasks that
would otherwise require human intelligence or
intervention. Digital assistants, GPS guidance,
autonomous vehicles, and generative AI tools (like Open
AI's Chat GPT) are just a few examples of AI in the daily
news and our daily lives.

3. Generative AI…
Generative AI refers to deep-learning models that can
generate high-quality text, images, and other content
based on the data, e.g., Large Language Models (LLM)
they were trained on.

Garbage in, garbage oot 🤔💻🚮
Since AI and LLM models are designed to process and make
decisions based on data, data quality is critical to the model's
accuracy and reliability.

8. What can generative AI do for me and my learners?
rephrase
paraphrase
spell checking
grammar checking
writing enhancements
notetaking
dictation
digital assistant
flashcards
quizzes
worksheets
close activities
brainstorming
text to video
creative writing
image to text conversion
text-to-speech
lesson plans
9. Built-in to devices/apps
Dictation: Siri > Google Voice Typing > Dictate > Alexa
Microsoft Editor: Spelling & grammar > style & clarity suggestions
Word/Word Online: Autocorrect predictive text > sentence rephrase
Immersive Reader: Reading progress > translator
PowerPoint: Design suggestions / closed captioning
Gemini app: summarise a web page > more info about something in a picture
> create an itinerary
All – extract text from images, e.g. images that convey information/difficult to
read.

Editor's Notes
Please design an image with a group of learners using AI to help with their learning
How to identify AI in popular technologies such as Microsoft Windows and Office 365, iPadOS and ChromeOS for Chromebooks.
Where to find and how to use AI online spelling checkers, e.g., Ginger, Grammarly and Editor.
How to make the most of Microsoft CoPilot to improve voice typing and spelling accuracy and more!
How to use 'Google Lens' and 'Live Text' to extract text from images to improve readability and accessibility.
Paul and Craig will also demonstrate how apps such as 'Quilbot' and'Help me Write' can be used to simplify and facilitate the writing process and discuss the moral implications of such technology in the classroom.
