The document discusses Flickr's transition from a master-slave database topology that was experiencing problems keeping up with demand and serving search traffic quickly, to a new federated database solution. The new solution aimed to address the single points of failure, reduce slave lag, and allow the system to scale write operations across multiple masters by storing smaller pieces of data in memory to enable faster page loads with many queries.

Design and Implementation of Incremental Cooperative Rebalancing

Since its initial release, the Kafka group membership protocol has offered Connect, Streams and Consumer applications an ingenious and robust way to balance resources among distributed processes. The process of rebalancing, as it’s widely known, allows Kafka APIs to define an embedded protocol for load balancing within the group membership protocol itself.
Until now, rebalancing has been working under the simple assumption that every time a new group generation is created, the members join after first releasing all of their resources, getting a whole new load assignment by the time the new group is formed. This allows Kafka APIs to provide task fault-tolerance and elasticity on top of the group membership protocol.
However, due to its side-effects on multi-tenancy and scalability this simple approach in rebalancing, also known as stop-the-world effect, is limiting larger scale deployments. Because of stop-the-world, application tasks get interrupted only for most of them to receive the same resources after rebalancing. In this technical deep dive, we’ll discuss the proposition of Incremental Cooperative Rebalancing as a way to alleviate stop-the-world and optimize rebalancing in Kafka APIs.

Kafka’s New Control Plane: The Quorum Controller | Colin McCabe, Confluent
Currently, Apache Kafka® uses Apache ZooKeeper™ to store its metadata. Data such as the location of partitions and the configuration of topics are stored outside of Kafka itself, in a separate ZooKeeper cluster. In 2019, we outlined a plan to break this dependency and bring metadata management into Kafka itself through a dynamic service that runs inside the Kafka Cluster. We call this the Quorum Controller.
In this talk, we’ll look at how the Quorum Controller works and how it integrates with other parts of the next-generation Kafka architecture, such as the Raft quorum and snapshotting mechanism. We’ll also explain how the Quorum Controller will simplify operations, improve security, and enhance scalability and performance.
Finally, we’ll look at some of the practicalities, such as how to monitor and run the Quorum Controller yourself. We’ll talk about some of the performance gains we’ve seen, and our plans for the future.

At Uber, we are seeing an increasing demand for Kafka at-least-once delivery (asks=all). So far, we are running a dedicated at-least-once Kafka cluster with special settings. With a very low workload, the dedicated at-least-once cluster has been working well for more than a year. When trying to allow at-least-once producing on the regular Kafka clusters, the producing performance was the main concern. We spent some effort on this issue in the recent months, and managed to reduce at-least-once producer latency by about 80% with code changes and configuration tuning. When acks=0, these improvements also help increasing Kafka throughput and reducing Kafka end-to-end latency.

In this session, we’ll review how previous efforts, including Netfilter, Berkley Packet Filter (BPF), Open vSwitch (OVS), and TC, approached the problem of extensibility. For several years, LinkedIn has been using Kafka MirrorMaker as the mirroring solution for copying data between Kafka clusters across data centers. However, as LinkedIn data continued to grow, mirroring trillions of Kafka messages per day across data centers uncovered the scale limitations and operability challenges of Kafka MirrorMaker. To address such issues, we have developed a new mirroring solution, built on top our stream ingestion service, Brooklin. Brooklin MirrorMaker aims to provide improved performance and stability, while facilitating better management through finer control of data pipelines. Through flushless Kafka produce, dynamic management of data pipelines, per-partition error handling and flow control, we are able to increase throughput, better withstand consume and produce failures and reduce overall operating costs. As a result, we have eliminated the major pain points of Kafka MirrorMaker. In this talk, we will dive deeper into the challenges LinkedIn has faced with Kafka MirrorMaker, how we tackled them with Brooklin MirrorMaker and our plans for iterating further on this new mirroring solution.

Drupal is a powerful and flexible tool to create web applications without building everything from scratch. This ability can drive developers to build complex websites without understanding what is Drupal doing behind the scenes.
The majority of Drupal performance talks mostly focus in aspects like infrastructure changes, caching strategies or comparisons between modules and architectures. Unfortunately when performance problems occur, development teams also follow strategies to replace different aspects of the platform looking only to standard aspects like slow queries without understanding and profiling the real problem.
The majority of times it is fundamental to measure and analyze what is the application is actually doing to understand te real problems. Drupal is a platform used by million of websites worlwide and its performance can in most cases be compared after measured.
In Acquia we do dozens of performance assessments per year, and even in most clients we find the same problems, often we find situations that only can be detected when measured and analized when looking to a profiler report.
In this session, I will explain how to detect performance problems looking to simple data, from logs to profiler data and providing some nice targets that can be analyzed to understand what is causing the uncommon bad performance of a site.

Unfortunately when performance problems occur, development teams also follow strategies to replace different aspects of the platform looking only to standard aspects like slow queries without understanding and profiling the real problem.
The majority of times it is fundamental to measure and analyze what is the application is actually doing to understand te real problems. Drupal is a platform used by million of websites worlwide and its performance can in most cases be compared after measured.
In Acquia we do dozens of performance assessments per year, and even in most clients we find the same problems, often we find situations that only can be detected when measured and analized when looking to a profiler report.
In this session, I will explain how to detect performance problems looking to simple data, from logs to profiler data and providing some nice targets that can be analyzed to understand what is causing the uncommon bad performance of a site.
My site is slow
Drupal is a powerful and flexible platform to build websites with rich funcionalities without building almost anything from scratch. This flexibility brought by the usage of a powerful framework and the work of a super active community can abstract people to understand what is Drupal doing behind the scenes.
Most of performance talks regarding Drupal focus on aspects like infrastructure changes, caching strategies, and comparison of performance between modules or platforms. Unfortunately when performance problems occur, development teams also follow several strategies to replace several aspects in their platforms, jump directly to look for slow queries before trying really to understand where is the bottleneck.

Better still, I'll also show you to automate these optimizations into processes, so you know everything is always getting optimized.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
