My physiotherapist manipulated my swollen Achilles tendon. “So, how far do you run every day?” she asked. “Mmm, about 14 km a day,” I replied. “What’s your time?” she asked. “5 minutes 45 seconds a kilometre,” I replied.
“You have Tendonitis. Reduce your running to 8 – 10 km every other day, slow down your time and avoid hills,” she commanded.
It has been quite a blow since I’m training for the Comrades Marathon in June and this has put a crimp on my plans.
So, for the past two weeks I run 10 km at a pace of 6 minutes a kilometre every other day. I feel as if I’ve gone backwards. I feel as if all my hard work is for nought.
But have I gone backwards? How many folks would like to be able to run 10 kilometres in 6 minutes a kilometre? How many folks would be able to run 10 kilometres in any time? Something that I’m doing injured. What I think of as a failure at the moment would be a huge achievement for them.
I’ve forgotten that I’ve never averaged 5 minutes 45 seconds a kilometre in all the years I’ve been at it. And, it’s closer to 5 minutes a kilometre when I run at the coast. It has only been since July 2016 that I’ve started averaging this time. Before this I’ve clocked in at around 6 minutes 10 seconds a kilometre. Even running injured I’m still doing doing better times than I’ve ever done before. And, I’m doing it at 53. This has to be some kind of achievement.
I think I’ve come far when it comes to running, at least.
If I dig a little deeper, I find that I’ve come far in a lot of other areas besides running. As a writer I’ve notched up a solid record of writing. I have more than 3 million words under my belt; six book and close on 400 articles published. As a professional speaker and trainer, I’ve conducted more than 500 interventions. I’ve spoken in Iran, Australia and Italy. So, I think I’ve come a little further than I thought I had and had some fun in the process too.
I’ll bet if you dig a bit you’ll realise that you’ve also come a lot further than you thought. You’ve achieved more than you ever hoped you would. And, sometimes you have surprised yourself and achieved things you never thought you would. You are valuable and valued by all those you come into contact with.
Your path and purpose may not always be clear. But know that the world has been waiting just for you. It’s waiting for you to pitch up. It’s waiting for you to claim your destiny.
Go on, look how far you’ve already come and look how far you still have to go. Look at how much you’ve done and how much you can still do. Look at how much you’ve grown (even though you think you haven’t). This must fill you with excitement. If you’re standing and conscious it means that you’re still in the race. You still have a crack at fulfilling your heart’s desire.
Look how far you’ve come. Be still. Be grateful.

The document discusses hyperpituitarism, which is the overproduction of pituitary hormones caused by a benign tumor in the pituitary gland, and its two sub forms: Acromegaly, which causes abnormal growth after epiphyseal closure, and Gigantism, which causes excessive growth before closure. It provides definitions for these conditions and notes they result from excess growth hormone production by the pituitary gland.

The document discusses how Shakespeare complicates the typical revenge tragedy plot in Hamlet by creating three interconnected revenge plots and an indecisive protagonist named Hamlet who is called upon by his father's ghost to avenge his death. Rather than being a typical physical hero, Hamlet is portrayed as an intellectual character whose delay in enacting revenge and apparent madness add ambiguity to the play.

The Dust Bowl was a period in the 1930s where poor farming techniques led to severe dust storms across the central United States. Farmers had plowed up native grasses, leaving the topsoil exposed and vulnerable to wind erosion. Intense droughts combined with these practices to create massive dust storms that killed crops, livestock, and even people by suffocating them with dust. Millions of Americans were forced to abandon their farms and migrate west in search of work, creating an environmental and humanitarian crisis.

Form Vs Intent
Many students are of the view that they just need to pass their exams with the bare minimum allowed marks.
If they pass, they'll get that high school certificate or their university degree. The idea being that a high school certificate will get them into university and that a university degree will get them a job.
They miss the point of the exercise. It is not about the result but the process. The trick to learning is to master a subject, not to aim for the bare minimum.
So that when entering the job market, you're actually useful and don't have to be retrained from scratch.
Also, going for the bare minimum is the genesis of the mediocrity virus that proliferates our world. The less we expect of ourselves, the less we do and the less we expect of others.
We don't strive to stand out and make our mark in this world. We strive to fit in so that we are never challenged in any way.
The same is true for our lives and our search to connect with our creator.
We do the bare minimum. We go to church once a week. We say our five daily prayers. We practice Shabbat every Friday.
We do all these things as we're taught. And, we're taught to do them with perfect form. But that's all it is, is form. What's missing is the intention. Doing form to connect with our creator is the bare minimum.
The trick is to master this existence and put everything into doing so. The trick is to practice every day for the moment of our death. Every moment gives us that chance.
Just going through rituals by rote and doing it under the cover of a mosque, synagogue or church is not going to help 'buy our way into heaven'. The couple of minutes we spend on our rituals won't cut it.
The only point of rituals are to focus our attention on the moment so that we are aware of the presence of the creator. So that we can be in awe and gratitude and humility that we have been so blessed.
Our true self comes out in the way we relate to the world and the rest of humanity in it. Every moment gives us a chance to be graceful, grateful and use the muscle of the heart to be useful, kind and beautiful to others. Every opportunity to be kind gets us closer to our creator.
Don't look to the heavens to find your creator. Look to every human being you touch and you'll see the divine in them. You'll meet the creator.
Our intention defines us, not our form. Follow your rituals but most of all be human, be kind, be in awe and be grateful. This is the only chance you and I have of touching the creator.

The document discusses the Hollywood Walk of Fame and how stars become immortalized there through terrazzo and brass sidewalk markers. However, over time the stars fade and become obscured by dirt and grime as countless feet walk over them. The document also discusses humanity's obsession with fame and leaving a legacy, yet notes how most innovators and creators like Leonardo Da Vinci did their work to be useful, not for fame, and are now largely forgotten. It argues we should focus on using our talents to be useful, not on fame, as all stars eventually fade away.

This document contains a community newspaper with the following summaries:
1. It lists upcoming events for the CMR organization in Volksrust including pancake sales, health talks, family days, and fundraising activities from March to December.
2. It advertises services for repairs from Piet Botha and motivational speaking services from Mr. John Oscar Kubeka.
3. The main article discusses the concept of heaven, arguing that we are already in heaven if we focus on appreciation, awe and gratitude for our lives and experiences rather than seeing heaven as a place we go after death. It encourages having a positive mindset and finding meaning in all experiences.
This is a motivational piece of text on how to create your magnum opus or masterpiece. But, you don't just have one masterpiece in you. The trick is to discover that you have unlimited magna opera in you ...
Volksrust students had a fun braai day to celebrate, playing soccer and rugby despite the cold weather. They also enjoyed water balloon activities. Meanwhile, a motivational speaker encouraged matric students to stay focused on their exams and not give up, stressing the importance of doing well to achieve their dreams. He advised them not to lose hope or be distracted and to make their community proud with good results.
Last night I attended an enchanting book talk with Piers Cruickshanks, author of Confluence: Beyond the River with Siseko Ntondini.
It’s a story of how Piers and Siseko, who against all odds, won a gold medal at the Dusi Canoe Marathon. (Finishing 7th).
But it’s really a story of the challenges of being human and triumphs of the human spirit when two cultures confluence.
Piers shares a vignette where he was irritated that Siseko pitched up late for practice. For Piers it was easy to get to the dam. For Siseko – not so much – because of the transport challenges that he and countless thousands face every day.
I can’t speak for Piers, but if it were me I would’ve been humbled and maybe slightly embarrassed at my ‘white privilege’ … him, then a 39 year old English teacher with a young family and the ‘perfect life’ and 18 year old Siseko clawing his way up from the streets of Soweto.
Rachel
I had a similar incident around 10 years ago. Rachel, my domestic assistant of 15 years was late again. I reprimanded her for being tardy. Her words to me made an indelible impression, “I get up every morning at 4 am and have to catch two taxis to get to you. I’m sorry, sometimes the taxis run late.”
In those days I was paying her R150 per day including transport. I realised that she was spending half her wages on transport. So that meant that she had R75 left over for food, toiletries and paraffin for her and her children. I don’t know about you … even in those days I could drop R150 in a heartbeat on something frivolous and not even think about it.
We don’t know what is happening with the human working for us, sitting next to us on the bus, at our work or in our schools. We don’t know what drama is playing out in their lives. Are they hungry? Are they sick? Have they lost a loved one? Are they going through marital strife? Are they depressed? Are they destitute?
I try and walk in the other’s shoes. I try and feel what the other is feeling. Sometimes I get it right … mostly I get it wrong.
Choice
All I know is that I’m where I am by the grace of the Creator. I could’ve been born to different parents, in a different country and under different circumstances. My life would have been totally different – it could have been better or worse (whatever that means).
So, I’m here now, in this moment. I can only control how I feel and how I react to my situation now. Other than that, I have little control of the outcome of this human experience.
I choose gratitude. I choose awe. I choose to withhold judgment. I choose curiosity. I choose to see every human as the same. And, I know that every human hides a secret pain and untold hope. This humbles me because I hold the heart of everyone I come into contact with in my hand. It’s in my power to break that heart or grow that heart. It’s in your power too.
The JOK Foundation donated school shoes, bags, and gift packs to 10 needy learners from local schools in Benoni, Gauteng. About 150 people attended the event at the Church of the Resurrection. The foundation aims to help needy children across four South African provinces. One recipient, Amogelang Mampane, thanked the foundation for changing his life and helping him feel pride in going to school. The pastor praised the foundation for its work in changing the lives of the poor.
When I was a young boy in the Karoo, one of my tasks was to prime the water pump. I had to push a lever down several times to prime the pump with water so that it would function properly.
In essence, I was kickstarting the pump so that it could produce water all day long.
Humans are like water pumps. We need to prime ourselves so that we can be effective throughout the day. This is where morning rituals and habits become invaluable. The only time when I'm selfish is the first two hours after waking. This is when I spend time on myself only. I've realised that spending time on myself is not selfish but rather, self-preserving. That time alone centres me so that I can tackle each day with vim and vigour.
Here's a snapshot of my ideal morning routine. I said 'ideal' because in many instances I miss it by a mile. I know when I miss my rituals my day's off-kilter and I'm not as sharp as I could be.

I ask myself why some people are the architects of genocide and acts against humanity.
Why do they unleash untold terror, destruction and misery onto the human race?
How can someone be so cruel?
Do they have a soul?
These are all questions that plague and frustrate me because there's no simple answer.
Is it because we allow them to thrive because of our indolence and ignorance. On 12 March 1938, the German Wehrmacht entered Austria and marched into Vienna. The German writer, Frederick Rech wrote: It was a day on which 'the criminal has been let go unpunished and made to appear more powerful than he is'.
This notion plays out in South Africa and Africa. As citizens we have become victims of our own indolence, greed and fear. We've created and allowed Frankenstein's monsters to dictate our lives.
Mugabe, Amin, Zuma, Motseneng, al-Assad,Taylor, Gupta, al-Bashir, Bell Pottinger and its attack dog, Georghegan.
On the international stage, there are the usual suspects: Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Tse-Sung, Bush, Blair and more recently, Putin and Trump.
Is it because they're homicidal maniacs, megalomaniacs, narcissists or psychopaths? That this may be a part of their nature that they cannot fight. My grandfather who bred mules and horses, would look a humans the same way as he looked at horseflesh. Sometimes he'd look at someone and say "Die saad is sleg gegooi." (The seed is badly thrown). These poor creatures are lost to themselves and to us because their genetic makeup has destined them to act out in this way. They find it almost impossible to fight their true nature.
They're all around us, of course. They're CEOs, managers, mothers and fathers and everything in-between.
Or is it as simple as that they don't have a boss to guide them? We all need a boss to protect us and guide us. Most of us have that boss. Be it a parent, a prefect at school, a supervisor, a manager, a managing director and a chairman. Even the Pope has a boss ... God. Unfortunately, because our bosses are as fractured as we are, we don't always get it right. But, at least there is someone that gives us a moment to pause before we act only in our interest.
I have a notion, that the individuals I've mentioned don't have a boss. They don't have someone to guide them. They believe their own PR and they think they can do no wrong. They have nobody to put them straight, chastise them or build them up. They have no compass because they think they are the compass. They're spiritually bereft because if they had an inkling that they're far from perfect, that they make mistakes and that they need guidance, they'd turn to their ultimate boss ... their creator. But they don't, because they think they're omnipotent.
Of course, now I wonder ... does God have a boss?
This document contains two summaries. The first is a motivational message about not crying during challenges and having faith and courage to overcome problems. The second discusses the importance of proper posture, both physically and metaphorically. It notes that one's posture reveals their true character and weaknesses, and encourages fixing one's posture to better face life's challenges and run well in this world.
Last week I attended a running clinic by Norrie Williamson. He said something to the effect that running doesn’t cause injuries.
Running reveals bad habits that we havepicked up over time. Like sitting at a computer all day long. Sitting at the wrong angle facing the computer. Driving everywhere and not walking. Poor sleeping patterns. Incorrect running technique.
Wrong shoes. And, so on.
Essentially, running reveals our flaws.

It includes an advertisement for a motivational speaker, discussions on unemployment rates and the importance of vocational skills, summaries of a school's "funky Friday" theme day where students dressed up in occupations and academic achievements of students from a school called Volkies.
1. The document discusses the concept of social responsibility for businesses. It argues that businesses should limit their environmental impact, treat employees fairly, and contribute to philanthropic causes through donations of time and money.
2. However, businesses should not feel guilty for "taking" and need to "give back". Instead, businesses are already contributing through providing jobs and paying taxes. Additional philanthropic contributions are a noble way to help those in need.
3. The document concludes that we are all responsible for ourselves and each other through our duties. We must strive to be the best versions of ourselves and contribute more than we take to thrive and help our communities thrive.

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.

Astronism, Cosmism and Cosmodeism: the space religions espousing the doctrine...Cometan
This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.

June 16, 1976 was a crucible moment in our
history. A brief moment in time where the
destiny we live in today was forged with the
blood of our children. A moment that was
the beginning of the end for the repressive
apartheid system.
A system that gave rights and entitlement
to one grouping of humans at the expense
of another.
Today we celebrate Youth Day. The right of
the youth to forge out its own destiny. The
right to be human. Human rights for want of
a better phrase.
I sometimes trip up on the concept of human
rights, though. I bandy it about with the best
of my liberal friends. It’s a nice motherhood
statement that rolls perfectly off the tongue
... “Human rights”. But when I think about
it, it also has a shadow side.
There’s no doubt that when a child is born
it’s automatically entitled to rights. The right
to be fed, clothed, protected and educated.
It can, after all barely fend for itself.
If it lived in a perfect world, a child could
expect to be entitled to its rights up until
around 22 when it qualifies from university.
Until then it’s pretty much a non-
contributing human in society. Today’s
society has engineered things in such a way,
that the youth can be nothing but takers.
This is the way of the world and is accepted
as the norm.
Of course, it’s only when the young adult
gets to go to work (if it’s lucky enough to
find employment) that there’s a radical shift
in how things are. Its sense of entitlement is
crushed underfoot by the realities of this
world. Now the world becomes a world of
‘duties’. It now realises that it can’t eat
rights. Rights don’t put food on the table
and clothes on the back. Rights don’t put a
roof over its head. It now has a duty to feed,
clothe and house itself. Either that or it dies.
It will also try and find a mate and start a
family.And, the circle begins again.
You see, when we’re brought up to think
that we’re entitled to rights it makes for
disgruntled and disillusioned adults. It also
makes for powerless adults.
Think about it. When you want something
from another person, that person has the
ability to withhold that which you want. This
makes you weak and gives power to the other
person. Thus, you’re always a slave to the
whim of the other.
And, when we don’t get what we want, we
get up to the most unbelievable mischief.
We’ve seen the tantrums our youth and
adults, for that matter, can throw. Burning of
classrooms, burning of schools, burning of
universities, the so-called service level
protests and a litany of other irrational
behaviours. Why? Because we have been
brought up to think that we have rights. We
have been brought up entitled. We think that
we are owed. And, of course that is not the
case, is it?
This universe that we’ve been born into
owes us nothing. We’ve been given a brief
opportunity by something inconceivably
bigger than us to play on this planet and
burn as bright as we can. For that alone we
have more than is due to us. For that alone
we should be in awe and gratitude. So, if I
tease out this theme a bit more, I actually
don’t think we are entitled to anything and
actually have no rights. What we do have is
a debt we need to pay for being created.
And that debt is serviced by a currency
called duty. It’s our duty to be good parents.
It’s our duty to be good children. It’s our
duty to be good citizens. It’s our duty to set
every other human being on this planet up
for success. It’s our duty to be a phenomenal
human being. I don’t know about you, but I
don’t think this is such a high price to pay
for the blessings we’ve already received and
for those that are still coming to us, do you?
I feel that we should teach our children about
duties long before they reach 22.

New data on new mortgage lending from the
South African Reserve Bank shows a
significant year-on-year decline – which is
in line with numerous indicators of
residential activity pointing to slowdown in
the property sector.
The June 2016 SARB Quarterly Bulletin
showed the value of new residential
mortgage loans granted have declined by
14.57% year-on-year for the 1st quarter of
2016.
“This is significantly slower compared with
positive growth of 15.2% year-on-year in the
previous quarter, and now reflecting a very
significant turnaround since the 50.2% year-
on-year multi-year high reached in the 1st
quarter of 2014,” said John Loos, household
and property sector strategist at FNB.
Both the commercial and residential sub-
components were “drags” on the growth rate
in the 1st quarter. The value of residential
mortgages granted declined by 13.8% year-
on-year,whilethatof commercialmortgages
declined by 14.9% in the same quarter.
reflect a significant slowing on the prior
quarter’s positive growth.
StatsSA last week reported South Africa
recorded a negative growth rate of -1.2% in
the first quarter of 2016, while the country’s
unemployment rate increased to 26.7% of the
labour force, up 2.2% from the previous
quarter.
Loos pointed out that for the residential
mortgage lending sector, the 1st quarter of
2016 was the 3rd consecutive quarter of
growth slowdown in the value of mortgage
loans granted.
The property market analyst said that the
residential market is arguably the more
