DSN 2700 Introduction to Design Processes and Practices
Department of Design
Mary Anne Beecher, Ph.D.
Michael Kellner, Ph. D.
Spring Semester, 2017
ASSIGNMENT 02: You Ate What? Due: February 24, 2017
Objectives
1. Articulate the relationship between cultural context and design innovation and
expression;
2. Research designers from historic periods and familiarize yourself with their signature
works;
3. Use the structure of comparison to highlight the similarities and differences between
two different types of designed products (buildings, products, graphics and services and
systems);
4. Articulate the relationship between cultural context and design innovation and
expression;
5. Practice your editing! Convey details in a concise and well-structured story.
Assignment:
Understanding more about the people who have contributed to the establishment of the design
disciplines is an important step toward being knowledgeable about design processes and
practices. And as design practices have become more actively entwined with people in general,
using well-told stories to communicate messages has become a critical design skill.
Use this opportunity to learn about two designers by comparing one to another and
demonstrate your awareness of how some particular aspect of their design process or a well-
known design project for which they have been credited can be explained through an
imaginative story you create. In this spirit, imagine that you take two of the designers you have
investigated to lunch. Describe where the lunch occurs…what would make sense, given the
personalities involved? What would they eat? Include an image of a significant design associated
with each of the designers in your essay and use references to it to inform your creative
decisions about the plot.
In your story, one of the designers should engage the other by one of the following three ways:
1. Telling him/her about how his/her work has been a positive influence on the younger
designer (and why);
2. Making the point that times have changed, and that new times require exciting new
approaches to design (and why);
3. Making the point that what is new can never live up to the quality of what was done in
the past (and why).
Context for your story should be the most critical cultural factors such as wars or other types of
life- altering political events, advancements in science, engineering or manufacturing, and/or
key evolutions in cultural expression (art, music, literature, etc.). Be sure to provide a reference
list for any sources you use to support the information your story provides, including sources for
the images.
Choose your two designers from the list below. Because this story is a work of fiction, the two
designers do not have to have lived in the same place or at the same time. Anything is possible!
Due
A 1500 word essay that expresses, in your own words, a story about two designers who meet.
Research PaperProvide critical analysis of an issue and policy.docxronak56
Research Paper
Provide critical analysis of an issue and policy intended to address it. For instance, some issue which students have suggested are:
· Water or drought in California
· Educational spending proposals
· Impact of Proposition 47 (reducing sentencing)
· California Health Care Challenges and
Solution
s
· State Budget and Reform Concepts, e.g., pension reform or realignment
· Challenge of transportation (high speed rail) and environment (AB 32 or water)
· Other as approved by instructor
Develop the topic into a fairly narrowly focused “mini” research paper. The idea is to choose a topic that is sufficiently narrow and focused so that it is manageable in a 12-15 page paper plus references and cover page. Regardless of the topic you choose, your paper must present some kind of analysis supported by published research.
Analysis involves asking an important question. What, for example, are the most important features of a political conflict that generates notice of a relevant issue? Or, which features of a political issue or reform merits change and is significant in California Politics today? For instance: Water and the implications of drought? Building a peripheral canal? The effects of campaign reform financing?
Proposal and minimum sources
Please forward by e-mail attachment to me by March 1st a one page statement of your proposal and five annotated tentative references. Optional: an outline or initial draft of the paper can be e-mailed any time for comment up to the last week of March. The final draft is due by March 31st
Your annotated references should identify a minimum of five separate sources of information (in addition to the course text) about your topic. The more recent the sources – the better. Articles are more useful than books. Conduct a decent literature search in ProQuest. Be cautious when using only WWW sources. They are not all equally credible.
Avoid only popular magazines – Time, Newsweek, Psychology Today, Parents Magazine, etc. Similarly, avoid electronic sources for which the organizational affiliation is unknown. Critically review and cautiously use any material from an organization or agency that has a specific agenda, e.g., A.C.L.U., government agency, etc. Seek help from one of the Reference librarians in the Pearson Library
Final papers will be 12-15 pages in length and will analyze specific institutional and political influences placed upon policy development in the selected issue area using, in part, the information and interaction provided your written sources and the Sacramento persons with whom you met and their staffs.
Generally papers should be presented as policy briefs taking the following format:
1. Statement of the issue and its significance
2. Context or Background of the Issue
3. Pros and Cons of the issue (including what groups support each side)
4. Your views on the feasibility and desirability of one or more options

Research Questions
How have families changed on television?
Have they changed that much over the years?
Compare and contrast through coding (The Brady Bunch and Modern Family)
Changes in family structure
The Brady Bunch was our first look at a non traditional family.
Mike and Carol had children from previous relationships.
They then move in together to create this blended family.
This was one of the first shows that showed blended families and the idea that you could love again after divorce or being a widow.
Changes in family structure
Modern family is just that, a modern day family.
There are a number different blended families from a homosexual couple, step kids, mixed ethnicities under one roof.
Modern family shows us how far we have come as a society.
Spousal interaction
Even spousal interaction is different from 1970 to now.
Carol Brady was very sweet and traditional mom.
I don’t think we ever witnessed Carol arguing with Mike.
The Brady’s were happy go lucky.
Minimal issues.
Spousal Interaction
Modern families is very different from the Brady Bunch.
Times have changed very much from 1970 to now.
Modern family shows modern issues.
Spouses argue.
Some episodes are even based around spousal conflict.
Women take on husband like characteristics. (Claire being a CEO)
Parenting techniques
Parenting and children have changed over the years.
The worst thing that happened in the Brady Bunch was Cindy’s doll went missing.
Mike and Carol did not point fingers and let the kids figure out what happened to the missing doll.
This then turned into an empowering and learning moment for the kids.
Parenting techniques
Modern family is a little different when it comes to parenting.
Peer-ing was introduced early on by Phil Dunphy. The idea behind this is act like a parent talk like a peer.
Parents need “me time”.
Children have changed over the years. There is more issues like drugs, sex, and attitudes.
Modern family addresses these issues with relatable scenarios.

Power Point Final Exam Project
HLTH 3420 Health Education
Each student will be completing an individual power point presentation over your Health Education topic. The Health Education topic is something of particular interest to you in the realm of health care. The topic is submitted to your instructor for approval prior to beginning the teaching project. You may need a bit of guidance in targeting your topic. Examples of a few topics previously used:
· Understanding Hyperthyroidism
· Recognizing Stress
· What you do not Know about Peridontal Disease
· Childhood Obesity
· HIV/AIDS Among Women
You are a health care provider teaching your first class. You will teach the class using a PowerPoint presentation. You will also provide a handout for the audience. The following assignments will assist you in developing the final presentation:
>Select a topic of interest
>Develop Behavioral/Learning Objectives
>Design a Content Outline
>Completion of a Teaching Plan Outline
Your submitted presentation will be worth 20% of your grade
· Your PowerPoint presentation will consist of 20-28 slides. Each slide will contain lecture notes located in the “Speaker notes” area below the slide to supplement your power point slides. Speaker notes will consist of at least five sentences per slide. Speaker notes are what you would actually say to the audience.
· Slide 1: The name of the class you have created, your name, name of the course (Health Education), semester & year
· Slides 2-28: Contain the following information: (You may add up to 5 slides to insert additional information)
a. Slide 2-3: Introduction/Background of the topic
(may include definition, statistics, prevalence)
b. Slide 3-5: List your overall goal/learning outcome and related objectives. A minimum of 3 objectives are required.
c. Body of the presentation will take approximately 5-10 slides: Begin with the Content Outline you’ve developed and provide the teaching information that you will share with your audience. Be careful not to crowd too much information on your slides. Most of your effort will be in the “speaker notes” in the white space area below the slide as you actually teach the class. This is where you will provide detailed information for the content that is presented on the slide to the audience. In an actual presentation, the audience only sees the PPT slide, not the speaker notes. Remember, this is what you will say to the audience.
d. Conclusion/ Summary: 1-2 slides.
e. Convert your previous submitted written handout into a slide if possible. If you cannot.

Unit 3: Synthesis Project
You will be creating an AP Exam Synthesis Question. The Synthesis Question gives you several sources and asks you to combine (synthesize) them with your own thoughts to create a cohesive essay. This is the same goal as a research paper. Your question (prompt) and sources should be formatted, labeled, and presented as on the AP Lang Exam. This will be modeled after the ones in the sample packets you were given.
Source Requirements:
· 8 sources
· No sources older than 10 years
· At least two sources published within the last two years (2020, 2021, 2022)
· Provide 1-2 sources that are images (political cartoons, graphs, charts, etc.)
· Sources should demonstrate a range of positions and approaches to the topic. Your goal is to figure out what 2-3 of the main “sides” are in the debate around the issue and represent those sides fairly.
Research Resources:
· Use this
link to access academic databases through CPS and Lane.
Example topics:
· Security vs Privacy: Personal Rights
· Standardized Education Movement
· Parenting Styles of the 21st Century
· Why Movements Matter: Voices of the People
· Technology’s Impact on American Families
Project Requirements:
Include, neatly formatted in one document
· Prompt page with directions, introduction, and assignment
· 6 sources
·
MLA citation of each source
· 3 potential thesis statements for this essay
a. One that is open
b. One that is closed
c. One that is a counter argument thesis.
· Choose one thesis statement, and create an outline of a response to ensure that others can synthesize these sources.
The most effective Synthesis Prompts give the test-takers a wide variety of sources to consider. These sources are of various types, lengths, and opinions. This diversity allows each test-taker to choose their own individual approach to the assignment while providing them with the tools to adequately synthesize into their paper.
You are going to choose EIGHT sources specific to your assigned topic. This will ensure that your group will be providing sources that show the complexity of the issue.
Therefore, when choosing your sources, keep several guidelines in mind:
1. Choose sources that cover a variety of viewpoints on your assigned topic, making sure to keep the sides evenly represented.
2. Choose sources from a wide variety of locations and formats. Use the list below as guidance; it is certainly not all-inclusive. Requirements are in CAPITAL letters. Beyond those required types, you may choose the rest of your sources at your discretion.

Writing Project 3 Prewriting
For this project I have chosen the issue of police brutality which is gradually crawling back specifically affecting youths and teens residing in low economic suburbs in Georgia.
My project will therefore target the residents in these localities particularly the youth, parents and opinion shapers with regards to shaping public policies. These stakeholders include activism NGOs, social researchers and the local political leadership.
This initiative was inspired by a presentation made by Isabela Robinson on Ted Talks in March last year where she suggested the evils subjected on young citizens by the police and the effect this has on their development (TEDx Talks, 2019).
Research Question- The role of social media in reporting cases of police brutality in low economic status suburbs in Savannah.
To collect primary data for my study, I have interviewed two victims of this social evil, their respective parents and have complemented this information with records of hospitalized victims and an expert opinion from a local researcher affiliated to social activism firm in Savannah.
In this project I will persuade the residents of the suburbs to embark on forming social networks and giving these cases the publicity they need to be exposed and attended.
To successfully convince the residence to use social media to root out police brutality I will use experts and opinions from authorities of the sociology of policing, present to them statistics of those affected by the issue and the worrying trend and later present the sorry states of those whose lives have been negative affected by the issue.
However, disrespect for authorities in many instances prompt the police to apply violence (Silver, 2017). I will emphasize on cooperation with the police and a call for the youth to desist from violence and drug abuse as the police have cited these as their resolve to apply violence to apprehend some youths.
To seek more information on this project, I have used the PsycINFO catalogue in the Cleveland State Community College to identify scholarly articles relating to the issue. Here is have found articles and videos which are more important as they have more elaborate data. I have not had any trouble sourcing information on the project.

Choose one participant that will agree to an administration of the interview schedule.
Find a quiet and comfortable place that sets your participant as ease. Remember not to deviate from the set interview schedule (although you can give minimal responses to requests for clarification or use neutral prompts or probes to get them going or keep them on track). Give your participant a pseudonym and record no information that could lead to their unique identification. Take detailed and exhaustive notes! Record everything because you may not realize that something is important until after the fact. Remember that the purpose of these content analyses is to gather data about how members of different groups think about, talk about, behave toward, or otherwise respond to another. You don’t have to record information that does not pertain to our purpose, but do record everything that may shed light on our research topic!
Take detailed notes during the interview. Include what they said and how they said it [important body language, pauses, and other non-verbal expressions should be noted in square brackets]. Find a quite place as soon after the interview is concluded to record your notes into this form. Clean your notes by removing your shorthand and explaining every detail. Remember that these notes need to be understandable on their own. Include everything and add additional details as you recall them. When you add detail after the fact in this first pass, use “Bright Green” text to distinguish it from your first observations.
Then set your notes aside for about 24 hours so that you can think about them some more. Make a third pass through your notes and use “Blue” text to distinguish these subsequent reflections from your first observations and your initial additions. It is important to make these distinctions clear because your understanding of the interview may change with time. Do not worry if your first, second, and third passes through your data agree with one another. Again, your perspective may change. It is important that you do not delete previous notes, but merely add to them each time through.
Finally, in all three passes, be careful to distinguish between what was said and your interpretation of what was said. Actual descriptions should be recorded in regular text (in the appropriate color), but your interpretations, opinions, and inferences from the data should be italicized. Try to maintain this “fact-value” distinction as carefully as you can (although it is impossible to be perfect in this regard). You can use as many pages for your notes as you need. This document will expand to make room. But please be conscientious about recording everything, including your reactions as the interviewer! Good luck and have fun!

P. Shafer | TSU | Spring 2015 | ENGL 1020s | Information about Major Papers 1 (Personal Essay) and 2 (Research Paper)
The following information is intended to help guide through your two major papers, a personal essay (requiring no outside sources) and a research papers (requiring three sources). The sooner you start on these papers, the sooner we can begin the process of me giving you feedback, you improving your paper, and then me providing even more feedback and you continuing to improve your writing. Of course, every time we go through these feedback stages, your grades will improve as well. Technically, so that you will have the best chance possible to be successful on these two major assignments, they are not due until the end of the semester. So, it is a fairly simple situation: I respect you enough to give you the choice: wait and throw something together at the last minute (in which case you will simply have to accept whatever grade you get), or taking the opportunity to start this process much sooner (and in turn give yourself a real shot at a grade that you and I can both be proud of). It’s up to you.

Data Analysis 4: Interview
Directions:

This paper reports the effects of annealing and age hardening heat treatments on the microstructural
morphology and mechanical properties of 7075 Al alloy. The material was cast in the form of round
cylindrical rods inside green sand mould from where some samples were rapidly cooled by early
knockout and others gradually cooled to room temperature. From the samples that were gradually
cooled some were annealed while others were age hardened. Both the as-cast in each category and
heat treated samples were subjected to some mechanical tests and the morphology of the resulting
microstructures were characterised by optical microscopy. From the results obtained there is formation
of microsegregations of MgZn
2
during gradual solidification which was not present during rapid
cooling. It was also found out that age hardening and annealing heat treatment operation eliminated
these microsegregations and improve mechanical properties of 7075 Al alloy. It is concluded that
microsegregation can be eliminated by rapid solidification and appropriate heat treatment process.

1. Introduction
Aluminium and its alloys are used in a variety of cast and
wrought forms and conditions of heat treatment. For over
70 years, it ranks next to iron and steel in the metal market.
The demand for aluminium grows rapidly because of its
unique combination of properties which makes it becomes
one of the most versatile of engineering and construction
material1-3.
The optimum properties of aluminium are achieved by
alloying additions and heat treatments. This promotes the
formation of small hard precipitates which interfere with
the motion of dislocations and improve its mechanical
properties4-7. One of the most commonly used aluminium
alloy for structural applications is 7075 Al alloy due to its
attractive comprehensive properties such as low density, high
strength, ductility, toughness and resistance to fatigue8-11. It
has been extensively utilized in aircraft structural parts and
other highly stressed structural applications12-16.
But aluminium-zinc alloy as it is in 7075 Al alloy is
susceptible to embrittlement because of microsegregation
of MgZn
2
precipitates which may lead to catastrophic
failure of components produced from it17,18. The alloy is also
susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking19,20. This is .

Five Stages of Negotiating
All negotiations are different. Simple negotiations, such as choosing which movie to rent, need not require an extensive negotiation process. However, when negotiations involve significant or complex issues, you should consider using the five-stage process model
Negotiating consists of five stages: (1) preparation and planning, (2) defining ground rules, (3) clarifying and justifying your case, (4) bargaining and problem solving, and (5) closure and implementation.
These stages are described below. 1. Preparation and planning. Without question, preparation and planning are the keys to successful deal making. While some may think they can negotiate effectively “on the fly,” all negotiators benefit from thorough advance thought and preparation. Be clear about what you want and why. Gather data to support your position. Consider ways to present your arguments persuasively. Consider what the other party wants and why.
2. Definition of ground rules. Determining your own guidelines or rules for the negotiation helps you plan a strategy that can be successful. Establish who will or should be present and at what part of the negotiation. Decide where the meeting will be held and offer a possible agenda for how the time will be allocated and for which issues. The location has implications in terms of who’s in charge. While there may be a benefit to having the negotiation at your office—the home court advantage—agreeing to have the negotiation at the other party’s office might show flexibility and willingness to negotiate on your part. When the topic covered is potentially divisive or difficult, a neutral location might help level the playing field for both parties—an important consideration when an integrative solution is desired.
3. Clarification and justification. As the negotiation begins, state what you want and why. A key issue here is the difference between positions and interests. A position is a stance—typically a firm one—taken by a negotiator. “I’ll give you $4,500 and that’s my final offer.” An interest is the explanation behind the position, need, or desire that expresses why a negotiator wants what he or she wants. “I’m asking for $5,000 because the car has low miles, an u.

Dylan Rodríguez ends his essay with the following questions:
How has the state-structured influx of Asian and Pacific Rim migrant populations, and the subsequent emergence of contemporary Asian American communities, helped to further displace criminalized Black and Brown populations and amplify what Marable calls the ‘‘subtle apocalypse’’ of mass-based civic death?
How might the 1965 Immigration Act be re-narrated such that it is understood less as an ambivalent emblem of opportunity, liberal democracy, and freedom, and more as a fundamental facet of an American movement toward new forms of mass-based captivity and bodily immobilization, that is, as the harbinger of new forms of ‘‘unfreedom’’ as primary modes of social organization under the logic of white supremacist global capital?
Will it be possible to muster the intellectual creativity and political will to articulate a rupturing critique of the field’s operative structural, political, and theoretical assumptions, in order to develop a radical critique of the prison industrial complex that may fundamentally alter Asian American Studies (and Ethnic Studies) as attempted practices of social transformation?
Choose one of these questions, and give a preliminary answer. Do not worry if your answer is incomplete. It will be. That is fine. Do your best.

Study Theology, Even If You Don't Believe in

The Evangelist St. Matthew with his symbol, the angel (THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE NETHERLANDS / WIKIMEDIA

When I first told my mother—a liberal, secular New Yorker—that I wanted to cross
an ocean to study for a bachelor’s degree in theology, she was equal parts aghast
and concerned. Was I going to become a nun, she asked in horror, or else one of
“those” wingnuts who picketed outside abortion clinics? Was I going to spend
hours in the Bodleian Library agonizing over the number of angels that could fit on
the head of a pin? Theology, she insisted, was a subject by the devout, for the
devout; it had no place in a typical liberal arts education.
Her view of the study of theology is far from uncommon. While elite universities
like Harvard and Yale offer vocational courses at their divinity schools, and nearly
all universities offer undergraduate majors in the comparative study of religions,
few schools (with the exceptions of historically Catholic institutions like
This lost liberal art encourages scholars to understand history from the inside

Georgetown and Boston College) offer theology as a major, let alone mandate
courses in theology alongside other “core” liberal arts subjects like English or
history. Indeed, the study of theology has often run afoul of the legal separation of
church and state. Thirty-seven U.S. states have laws limiting the spending of public
funds on religious training. In 2006, the Supreme Court case Locke v. Davey upheld
the decision of a Washington State scholarship program to withhold promised
funding from an otherwise qualified student after learning that he had decided to
major in theology at a local Bible College.
Even in the United Kingdom, where secular bachelor's programs in theology are
more common, prominent New Atheists like Richard Dawkins have questioned
their validity in the university sphere. In a 2007 letter to the editor of The
Independent, Dawkins argues for the abolishment of theology in academia,
insisting that “a positive case now needs to be made that [theology] has any real
content at all, or that it has any place whatsoever in today's university culture.”
Such a shift, of course, is relatively recent in the history of secondary education.
Several of the great Medieval universities, among them Oxford, Bologna, and
Paris, developed in large part as training grounds for men of the Church. Theology,
far from being anathema to the academic life, was indeed its central purpose: It
was the “Queen of the Sciences” the field of inquiry which gave meaning to all
others. So, too, several of the great American universities. Harvard, Yale, and
Princeton alike were founded with the express purpose of teaching theology—one
early anonymous account of Harvard's founding speaks of Joh.

Abstract
Objective This review investigated the effect of the various models of nursing care delivery using the diverse levels
of nurses on patient and nursing outcomes.
Methods All published studies that investigated patient and nursing outcomes were considered. Studies were
included if the nursing delivery models only included nurses with varying skill levels. A literature search was
performed using the following databases: Medline (1985–2011), CINAHL (1985–2011), EMBASE (1985 to current)
and the Cochrane Controlled Studies Register (Issue 3, 2011 of Cochrane Library). In addition, the reference lists of
relevant studies and conference proceedings were also scrutinised. Two reviewers independently assessed the
eligibility of the studies for inclusion in the review, the methodological quality and extracted details of eligible studies.
Data were analysed using the RevMan software (Nordic Cochrane Centre, Copenhagen, Denmark).
Results Fourteen studies were included in this review. The results reveal that implementation of the team nursing
model of care resulted in significantly decreased incidence of medication errors and adverse intravenous outcomes,
as well as lower pain scores among patients; however, there was no effect of this model of care on the incidence of
falls. Wards that used a hybrid model demonstrated significant improvement in quality of patient care, but no
difference in incidence of pressure areas or infection rates. There were no significant differences in nursing outcomes
relating to role clarity, job satisfaction and nurse absenteeism rates between any of the models of care.
Conclusions Based on the available evidence, a predominance of team nursing within the comparisons is
suggestive of its popularity. Patient outcomes, nurse satisfaction, absenteeism and role clarity/confusion did not differ
across model comparisons. Little benefit was found within primary nursing comparisons and the cost effectiveness
of team nursing over other models remains debatable. Nonetheless, team nursing does present a better model for
inexperienced staff to develop, a key aspect in units where skill mix or experience is diverse.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Practices
Department of Design
Mary Anne Beecher, Ph.D.
Michael Kellner, Ph. D.
Spring Semester, 2017
ASSIGNMENT 02: You Ate What? Due:
February 24, 2017
Objectives
1. Articulate the relationship between cultural context
and design innovation and
expression;
2. Research designers from historic periods and
familiarize yourself with their signature
works;
3. Use the structure of comparison to highlight
the similarities and differences between
two different types of designed products (buildings,
products, graphics and services and
systems);
4. Articulate the relationship between cultural context
and design innovation and
expression;
5. Practice your editing! Convey details in a
2. concise and well-structured story.
Assignment:
Understanding more about the people who have
contributed to the establishment of the design
disciplines is an important step toward being
knowledgeable about design processes and
practices. And as design practices have become more
actively entwined with people in general,
using well-told stories to communicate messages
has become a critical design skill.
Use this opportunity to learnabout two designers by
comparing one to another and
demonstrate your awareness of how someparticular aspect
of their design process or a well-
known design project for which they have been
credited can be explained through an
imaginative storyyou create. In this spirit,
imagine that you take two of the designers you
have
investigated to lunch. Describe where the lunch
occurs…what would make sense, given
the
personalities involved? What would they eat? Include
an image of a significant design
associated
with each of the designers in your essay and use
referencesto it to inform your creative
decisions about the plot.
In your story, one of the designers should
engage the otherby one of the following three
ways:
3. 1. Telling him/her about how his/her work has been a
positive influence on the younger
designer (and why);
2. Making the pointthat times have changed, and that
new times require exciting new
approaches to design (and why);
3. Making the pointthat what is new can never live up
to the quality of what was done in
the past (and why).
Context for your storyshould be the most critical
cultural factors such as wars or othertypes of
life- altering political events, advancements in
science, engineering or manufacturing, and/or
key evolutions in cultural expression (art, music,
literature, etc.).Be sure to provide a reference
list for any sources you use to support the
information your storyprovides, including sources
for
the images.
Choose your two designers from the list below.
Because this storyis a work of fiction, the
two
designers do not have to have livedin the same place
or at the same time.Anything is possible!
Due
4. A 1500 word essay that expresses,in your own words,
a storyabout two designers who meet
and converse about their work in a brief but
entertaining conversation. Yourstoryshould be
presented as a double-spaced pdf, deposited in Carmen
prior to the start of class on 2/24/17.
No hard copy of this assignment is required.
