Miss Droplet and Master Droplet went on a journey and discovered a grey-brown puddle where a stream used to be. The droplets in the puddle explained that Dirty Plant Evil had thrown mud in the stream, turning it into a fetid puddle. Miss Droplet and Master Droplet rallied the other forest inhabitants to help save the stream. They used cobwebs to block Dirty Plant Evil's pipe, summoning Rain the wizard who poured down a terrible rainstorm on the plant. The stream was cleaned and returned to life, with flowers and grass growing again along its banks.

Before Earth was here there was only water as far as one could see in all directions, with birds and animals swimming around in it. Up above in the clouds there was Skyland. In Skyland was a great and beautiful tree with four white roots stretching to the four sacred directions. Every kind of fruit and flower grew from its wide spreading branches.
The Chief of Skyland's young wife was expecting a child. One night she dreamt she saw the great tree uprooted. The next morning she told her husband her dream. "This is very sad," he said, "for it is a dream of great power and we must do all we can to make it come true." Then the chief called all the men together and told them they must uproot the tree. But the roots were so deep and strong they couldn't budge it. So the ancient chief himself wrapped his arms around the tree and strained and strained, until with one last great effort he uprooted it. Now there was a great hole where the tree's roots had been. The chief's wife came and leaned over to look down, holding the tip of one of the uprooted tree's branches to steady herself. Far below she thought she saw something glittering like water. Leaning out further, she lost her balance and fell into the hole. Her hand slipped from the tip of the branch, leaving her only a handful of seeds as she fell.
Far, far below in the waters some of the animals looked up. "Someone is falling from the sky," said one.
"We must help her," said another. Then two Swans flew up and caught her between their wings, and brought her gently down to the water where the birds and animals were watching.
She is not like us," said one of the animals. "She doesn't have webbed feet. I don't think she can live in the water."
"What shall we do?" said another of the water animals.
"I know," said one of the birds. "I have heard there is Earth far below the waters. If we dive down and bring up Earth she will have a place to stand. So the birds and animals tried to bring up Earth. First Duck dove far down beneath the surface, but he couldn't reach the bottom and floated back up. Then Beaver tried. He went even deeper, so deep that it was all dark, but he couldn't reach the bottom either. Then Loon tried and was gone a long, long time, but he too failed to bring up Earth. Soon it seemed that all had tried and failed. Then a small voice spoke.
"I will bring up Earth or die trying." They all looked to see who it was. It was little Muskrat. She dove down and swam and swam. She was not as strong and swift as the others, but she was determined. She went so deep that it was all dark, and still she swam deeper. Her lungs felt ready to burst, but she swam deeper still. At last, just as she was becoming unconscious, she grasped at the bottom with her little paw and floated upwards, almost dead. When the other animals saw her break the surface, they thought she had failed. Then .

Creator traveled the earth and saw that Winter's power had grown too strong, keeping the land frozen and barren. Creator sought the help of Spring, Summer, and Autumn, who each explained how Winter was disrupting their work and the natural cycle. They confronted Winter, but he was too powerful. Creator realized that together their magics were stronger, so he summoned all of their powers. Winter disappeared and the seasons returned to their proper places, with Spring, Summer, and Autumn bringing life back to the land. Creator was pleased that the balance of nature had been restored.

What I Have Learned from Nature

Some of my fondest childhood memories are with my parents hiking around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. One memory is particularly vivid. I was six and on the trail to Abrams Falls after a summer rain moved through the forest. The sun was just again peaking through the canopy. As my folks and I moved along the trail I noticed water droplets on the leaves of a rhododendron. We stopped for a rest next to the woody plant along the bank of Abrams Creek. I sat down, letting my hands feel the damp Earth, laden with bryophytes. I studied the beads of water on the plant before turning my considerations to the creek. My love for nature began young.
In the wild I am always in awe of water. Water, in its many forms, occupies every part of the forest. Clouds are among my favorite forms water takes. There is nothing like standing on a green mountain bald on a cool spring day — the clouds steal the show. Whether weeping grey or puffy white, when the land is again bursting with life, clouds hug ridges and occupy valleys in ways that can only be described as breathtaking. I once had the holy experience of camping in the Blue Ridge of North Carolina on a late Spring evening at over 5,000 feet. As I hiked to camp I moved across mountain meadows covered in a thick fog, but my destination sat above the clouds. That night around a roaring bonfire, in the company of budding plants and a vast array of newly awakened wildlife, there was a piercing, radiant starry night above, and a sea of clouds cracking with lightning below. All of the heavens witnessed Earth’s wonder.
From the clouds, in the chill of January, snow seems to continually fall over temperate Appalachian forests. In the winter, snow dusts the landscape, coating evergreens and the naked limbs of deciduous trees. When running old trails in this ancient terrain in the depths of the season, ones own breath is often visible as it escapes the lungs. If, like I often do, one follows this vapor in the white landscape, it is hard not to notice the depth of the mountains this time of year. Though peppered in white, something about the winter makes the Appalachians appear dark. Perhaps it is exposed ancient metamorphic rock, thick ice that clings to steep mountain ridges and the bare grey bark of trees, but the color avoids a description. The mountains are mysterious and beautiful beyond words.
My favorite time in the woods, however, is Autumn. Fall air is always brisk, the sky is often a beaming cerulean blue, and it is of no mystery why the southern Appalachians are long described as “smoky.” A thick mist settles in the mountains in the fall and the forest changes dramatically daily. Some of my favorite moments of solitude, and thus my life, are experienced in the mountain lowlands in late autumn. Under the splendor of November hue, on the banks of a stream I am often lost in thought as I watch water carve its way through ancient rock while, at the same .

Creator traveled the earth and saw that Winter's power had grown too strong, keeping the land frozen and barren. Creator sought the help of Spring, Summer, and Autumn, who each explained how Winter was disrupting their work and the natural cycle. They confronted Winter, but he was too powerful. Creator realized that together their magics were stronger, so he summoned all of their powers. Winter disappeared and the seasons returned to their proper places, with Spring, Summer, and Autumn bringing life back to the land. Creator was pleased that the balance of nature had been restored.

What I Have Learned from Nature

Some of my fondest childhood memories are with my parents hiking around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. One memory is particularly vivid. I was six and on the trail to Abrams Falls after a summer rain moved through the forest. The sun was just again peaking through the canopy. As my folks and I moved along the trail I noticed water droplets on the leaves of a rhododendron. We stopped for a rest next to the woody plant along the bank of Abrams Creek. I sat down, letting my hands feel the damp Earth, laden with bryophytes. I studied the beads of water on the plant before turning my considerations to the creek. My love for nature began young.
In the wild I am always in awe of water. Water, in its many forms, occupies every part of the forest. Clouds are among my favorite forms water takes. There is nothing like standing on a green mountain bald on a cool spring day — the clouds steal the show. Whether weeping grey or puffy white, when the land is again bursting with life, clouds hug ridges and occupy valleys in ways that can only be described as breathtaking. I once had the holy experience of camping in the Blue Ridge of North Carolina on a late Spring evening at over 5,000 feet. As I hiked to camp I moved across mountain meadows covered in a thick fog, but my destination sat above the clouds. That night around a roaring bonfire, in the company of budding plants and a vast array of newly awakened wildlife, there was a piercing, radiant starry night above, and a sea of clouds cracking with lightning below. All of the heavens witnessed Earth’s wonder.
From the clouds, in the chill of January, snow seems to continually fall over temperate Appalachian forests. In the winter, snow dusts the landscape, coating evergreens and the naked limbs of deciduous trees. When running old trails in this ancient terrain in the depths of the season, ones own breath is often visible as it escapes the lungs. If, like I often do, one follows this vapor in the white landscape, it is hard not to notice the depth of the mountains this time of year. Though peppered in white, something about the winter makes the Appalachians appear dark. Perhaps it is exposed ancient metamorphic rock, thick ice that clings to steep mountain ridges and the bare grey bark of trees, but the color avoids a description. The mountains are mysterious and beautiful beyond words.
My favorite time in the woods, however, is Autumn. Fall air is always brisk, the sky is often a beaming cerulean blue, and it is of no mystery why the southern Appalachians are long described as “smoky.” A thick mist settles in the mountains in the fall and the forest changes dramatically daily. Some of my favorite moments of solitude, and thus my life, are experienced in the mountain lowlands in late autumn. Under the splendor of November hue, on the banks of a stream I am often lost in thought as I watch water carve its way through ancient rock while, at the same .

Two parrots named Jack and Mike were friends. When Jack received a box of seeds from his grandmother, he ate them all instead of sharing with Mike. A kitten was playing and accidentally broke a vase while the hostess was shopping. The kitten begged the parrot who witnessed it to not tell the hostess, but the parrot said the splinters from the broken vase would tell the truth. - 1. Droplets
- 2. In a faraway forest there lived a Droplets family: Mr Droplet, Mrs Droplet, Miss Droplet and Master Droplet. They lived in love and happiness and they were good friends with flowers. Mr Droplet and Mrs Droplet often told the kids that they were not alone on the Earth. There are many lakes, rivers and streams around.
- 3. One day, Miss Droplet and Master Droplet decided to go camping to find out what a lake, a river and a stream were. Rolling over the blade of grass, they set out on an exciting journey. A grasshopper took them on his back to the flower meadow and then one beautiful butterfly with magic wings carried the kids to the brook.
- 4. But what is this? Instead of a cheerful and fresh streamlet, a grey-brown puddle looked at them! Our friends came closer and saw the dirty and unhappy droplets. ‘What happened to you? Why are you crying?’ the kids asked. ‘How can we not cry? We lived happily, amicably in a crystal-clear stream…
- 5. But one day Dirty Plant Evil appeared in our region. He was very big and scary. A smelly black smoke came out from his ears, all the droplets trembled watching him. Dirty Plant Evil was terrible and rumbling and he threw mud into the streambed. And that's what's left of our house! One big fetid puddle! Earlier along the shore, flowers grew and the grass grew green, ants and bugs crawled. And now what?’ The Droplets looked around and saw lifeless banks..
- 6. ‘You need to be saved’ cried Miss Droplet and Master Droplet. ‘You need help! The trickle is in trouble!’ And all the inhabitants of the forest began to gather from all over the forest. The spiders wove their strong cobwebs, and then birds grabbed the cobwebs and pulled them between the stream banks. The diligent beavers tied the threads tightly under the water. A dragonfly carried the strongest and largest cobweb over the Plant's pipe, and a white smoke came out from it.
- 7. ‘Hooray!’ everyone shouted. Looking at the sky, they saw that that smoke had turned into a white cloud where Rain, the good wizard sat. He threw a terrible downpour down on Dirty Plant Evil .
- 8. And a miracle happened! The wicked Plant promised he would never harm anyone ever again, because he realized that how important is to be friends with nature! Everything came back to life. The Droplets and other inhabitants of the forest saw how clean trickle ran cheerfully and noisily along. The stream banks were boomed with flowers and new grass, and the insects came back into their routine. It was a bright sunrise and an intense rainbow appeared over the stream. And the Plant looked at all this and was happy!
- 9. Miss Droplet and Master Droplet returned home to their clearing and for a long time they told their parents about the magical plant transformation and about the brook rescue. We live in a beautiful but very fragile world! Let's take care of it!
