This exhibition will explore the role of classical antiquity in artistic education and practice from the Renaissance through the 19th century. It will feature over 35 works from major collections and address two themes: the formal role of antiquity in academic training, and its use in artist portraiture for self-promotion. The exhibition will be accompanied by a substantial catalogue presenting new scholarship on topics like the classical ideal in different periods and training in European academies through the centuries.
