Sugar cane juice is probably the
most popular and widely
consumed juice here in India. An
interesting fact is that it has
been in use for thousands of
years.
In Ayurveda, sugar cane juice,
and its other derivatives such as
jaggery is used in many
formulations including lehyams
(herbal jams), Asava, Arishta etc.

इक्षषोः रसष र्ुरोः स्निग्धष बृंहणोः कफमूत्रकत् ।।वष्योः स्वादुपाकरसष सरोः ।सषऽग्रे सलवणष,
दन्तपीस्नितोः शक
ग रासमोः ।।
Sugarcane juice is guru (heavy)snigdha (unctuous), brmhana
(nutritive)creates kapha and urine, is vrsya (aphrodisiac) and śita (cool)It
cures rakta pitta (disorders)is sweet in rasa (taste) and vipāka (metabolic
end-effect) and is sara (laxative). Stem of is salty at its tip. Its juice got
when chewed has similar to sugar.
Sugarcane juice sucked by biting mitigates Pitta and Rakta, equal to
sugar properties, not causing heartburn and increase Kapha.
4. इक्षुभेद
पौण्ड्
र क, स्नभरूका, वाृंस्नशक, शातपवगक, काृंतार, तपेक्षू, नईपल, etc are different
varieties of Sugarcane, out of them पौण्ड्र क is superior among all of them
followed by वाृंस्नशक.
Mechanically extracted sugarcane juice undergoes some changes, as
it is with- out removing its tips or rodent - bitten parts. It is also likely to
be as it is usually used only after some time of . Hence, it is guru
(heavy) and causes vidāha (burning sensation during digestion ) and
Vishtambha (constipation with distension).
Some products of Sugarcanes are Phanit, Matsyayandi, Guda, Khanda
(sugar candy), Sharkara.etc
5. फास्नणत- Sugarcane juice cooked, which is thick, consisting of more water, is
known as Phanita.Phanita is heavy for digestion, causes increase of moisture,
Balya, produces Kapha and rushya, mitigates Vata, Pitta and fatigue, purifies
the urine and urinary bladder. It's Guru and produces Abhishyandi (increased
secretion).
Matsyayandi (Molasses) - sugarcane juice well cooked, which has become
solid with very slight quantity of water left, responds slowly hence called
Matsyayandi. Matsyayandi is purgative, best for strength easily digestible,
mitigates Pitta and Vata, Madhura Rasa, Balya, Vrushya and removes the
impurities of Blood.
6. Guda (Jaggery)- sugarcane juice well cooked becomes hard like stone is
known as Guda.Guda is Vrushya, heavy for digestion, Snigdha, mitigates Vata,
purifies the urine, and produces fat, Kapha, worm and gives strength.
Khanda (sugar candy)- Khanda is MadhuraRasa, Vrushya, good for the eyes,
Balya, cold in potency, mitigates Vata and Pitta, Snigdha, cures vomiting
effectively.Sarkara (podery sugar) - Khanda in the shape of sand, white in
colour, is called Sarakara and Sita. Madhura Rasa helps in taste, mitigates Vata,
Pitta, Rakta, burning sensation, fainting, vomiting and fever, cold in potency
and Vrushya.
7. Sugar cane juice is nourishing, it is a natural diuretic.
Sugarcane is cold in nature. So Sugar cane juice is one of the best natural
coolant drink. Sugar cane slightly increases Kapha Dosha and calms Pitta
Dosha.
Sugarcane juice has a low glycemic index, which keeps the body’s metabolism
healthy and helps maintain a healthy body weight. Roughly one teaspoon of
raw sugar contains only eleven calories.

8. When taken by chewing, sugarcane juice is Vrushya (aphrodisiac), Sheeta
(cold), Sara (laxative), promotes movement of liquids in channels Snigdha
(unctuous), oily Brumhana (improves nourishment), Madhura (sweet),
Shleshmala (increases Kapha).
Sugar cane juice is not ideal for those having Kapha body type
When to take Sugar cane juice?
The best time to take sugar cane juice is in the afternoon, when Pitta Dosha
is predominant. It is better to avoid it during night.
9. मद्यवर्ग (सृंधानवर्ग – ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES)
दीपनृं रषचनृं मद्यृं तीक्ष्णषष्णृं तुस्निपुस्निदम् ।। सस्वादुस्नतक्तककुकमलपापाकरसृं सरम् ।।
Alcoholic beverages are dipana rochana (appetiser),tiksna (sharp in
action) and usna (hot),is amla (sour) in rasa (taste) and vipāka and is
also slightly sweet, bitter, acrid and astringent.
When consumed in the recommended form, it provides pleasure and
nourishment, is sara (laxative) and promotes svara (voice), ārōgya
(health) pratibha (intellect) and varna (complexion).It is laghu (light) and
suitable for those suffering from sleep as well as insomnia. It vitiates pitta
and rakta. It is recommended for the lean and the obese and is rūksa
(dehydrator) and sūksma (subtle).It cleanses the srōtōmārgās (metabolic
Pathways) and pacifies Vata and Kapha.
10. सुरा (INDIGENOUS BEER)
Beverages prepared from cereals is known as sura (beer made
indigenously).The cereals that are either cooked or ground are mixed with
jaggery and other spices and are subjected to fermentation. Its alcohol
content varies from 2% to 8%. This alcohol can be separated by distillation,
in which case it cannot be called as beer.
Sura (Indigenous beer) relieves gulma (tympanites) udara (ascitis) ,arśas
(haemorrhoids), grahani (functional bowel diseases) and śōsa
(emaciation).It is unctuous and heavy. It pacifies vāta and increases mēda
(lipids), rakta (erythropoiesis),stanya (breast milk),mūtra (urine) and kapha.
11. अररि AND MARDVIK
Arishta - Fermented decoction ( arishta) has
properties according to which drugs it made.It cures
disease of the duodenum, anemia, skin diseases,
piles, oedema, enlargement and abdomen, fever,
abdominal tumor, worms and disorder of spleen. It is
astringent, pungent and aggravates vata.
Mardvik - Grape wine is lekhana (abrasive, hdya
(stomachic / cardiac tonic), not much usna (hot) and
is madhura (sweet) and sara (laxative). It slightly
increases vata and pitta and cures pandu roga
(anaemia), prameha (diabetes), arsas
(haemorrhoids) and krmi (intestinal parasites). Date
wine is slightly inferior in quality compared to grape
wine. It provokes vata and is guru (heavy).
12. वारूणी (TODDY, BEVERAGES FROM TREE)
Varuni (toddy) is a beverage prepared by tapping
parts of certain varieties of trees like coconut.
Sharangdhar opines that varuniis obtained from
palm, date palm etc. It can also be (said to be)
prepared from cereals, to which are added herbal
roots like that of Punarnava.
Varuni has the same properties of sura. It is hrdya
(stomachic), laghu (light) and tiksna (sharp in
action. It cures śūla (colic),kāsa (cough),chardi
(vomiting),śvāsa (asthma),
vibhandha(obstruction),ādhmān(abdominal
distention) and pinasa (running nose).
13. तैलवर्ग (FATS AND OILS)
The fatty material from unctuous substance like Tila (sesamum) etc. is
known as Taila Varga. All Taila mitigates Vata Dosha.
The properties of vegetable oils depend upon the source (the
corresponding seeds from which they are extracted). The chief oil among
them (gingelly /sesame oil) is tiksna (sharp in action), vyavayi (spreading
quickly / disseminating'), and causes tak dosa (skin diseases).
It is undesirable for the eyes, suksma (subtle), usna (hot) and does not
increase kapha. It nourishes the lean and emaciates the obese. It brings
about constipation, destroys krmi (parasitic infestation) and is capable of
curing almost all diseases when processed with suitable medicines.
14. स्नतलतैल AND एरण्ड्तैल
Tila Taila - It is not easily digestible, gives
stability, strength and complexion, laxative,
Vrushya, Vikashi, Vishada, Madura Rasa and
Vipaka, Sukshma, mitigates Vata and Kapha,
hot in potency.
Erand Taila - It is slightly bitter and slightly acrid
in taste, but basically sweet. It is sara (laxative)
and heavy. It pacifies vriddhi (scrotal swellings
like hydrocoele, hernia), gulma (tympanites),
vata dosa, kapha dosa, udara (ascites) and
visama jvara (intermittent fever).
15. सार्गपतैल
Sarsapa taila (Mustard
oil), is of acrid taste, is
usna (hot), tiksna
(sharp in action) and
laghu (light). It pacifies
kapha and vata,
destroys sukla (causes
'seminal weakness')
and causes raktapitta
(bleeding disorders). It
relieves
kotha(urticaria), kustha
(skin dis-eases), arsas
(haemorrhoids), vrana
(ulcers) and krmi
(intestinal parasites).
16. PROPERTIES OF
ANIMAL FATS
Vasa (muscle fat) and majja
(bone marrow) pacifies vata,
provides strength and increases
pitta and kapha. Their properties
are similar to that of the meat of
respective animal sources.
Mēdas is similar to vasa and
majja in properties.
17. कन्दवर्ग (ROOTS AND TUBERS)
रक्तस्नपत्तहराण्याहोः शीतास्नन मधुरास्नण च । र्ुरूस्नण
बहशुक्रास्नण स्तन्यवद्धिकरास्नण च ||
These all-cure bleeding diseases, are cold in
potency, sweet in taste, hard for digestion,
increase semen greatly and augment
breastmilk.
18. स्नवदारीकन्द
मधुरष बृंहणष वष्योः शीतोः
स्वर्योऽस्नतमूत्रलोः ।स्नवदारीकन्दष बल्यश्च
स्नपत्तवातहरश्च सोः ||
Vidarikanda is sweet,
stoutening, aphrodisiac, and
cold in potency, good for
voice, increases urine greatly,
strengthening and mitigates
pitta and Vata
19. शतावरीकन्द
वातस्नपत्तहरी वष्या स्वादुस्नतक्ता शतावरी |
महती चैव हृद्या च मेधास्निबलवस्नधगनी ।।
Satavari Kanda mitigates vata and
pitta, is aphrodisiac, sweet and bitter
in taste, the bigger kind (of Satavari)
is good for the heart, increases
intelligence, digestive power, and
strength. Its sprouts, (shoots, young
leaf buds) cure duodenal disease
and piles, is aphrodisiac, cold in
potency, rejuvenator, mitigates
Kapha and Pitta and bitter in taste
20. स्नबस- Bisa (rhizome/ root of lotus) does not cause heartburn, cures
bleeding disease (of purifies blood and Pitta), stays long in the stomach
without digestion, is hard for digestion, causes dryness and bad taste in
the mouth, and increases Vata.
सुरेंद्रकन्द - Surendra Kanda (vajrakanda according to dalhana) mitigates
Kapha, pungent after digestion and increases Pitta.
वेनु करररा - Venu karira (young shoot of Bamboo) is hard for digestion
and causes aggravation of kapha and Vata.
