This document discusses the ACT Feed-in Tariff, which rewards renewable power generation by the Australian public. It pays homeowners and businesses for excess renewable energy generated and fed back into the power grid. The tariff guarantees payment of $0.50 per kWh for electricity from solar, wind, hydro, and biomass systems for 20 years. This incentive aims to increase uptake of renewable energy and make "green" power more affordable and efficient over time. Germany has shown that feed-in tariffs can be an effective policy for promoting renewable energy development.
The document announces an event that will feature a range of speakers from different backgrounds involved in renewable energy and sustainability activism, including an eco-artist, the CEO of a wave power company, a local government official, an HR manager, and a politician. The event is funded by sustainability organizations and will be held on November 4, 2014 to discuss grassroots environmental movements, green politics, and corporate environmentalism.
The NHS Forest project coordinates healthcare organizations and local communities to plant trees and increase green spaces on NHS sites. This improves patient and community health and wellbeing through exposure to nature. It also reduces the carbon footprint of the NHS. So far over 2000 trees have been planted at 20 sites, with plans for 50 sites this year. Feedback has been positive from partners and communities who have participated in planting activities. The biggest challenges are long-term funding and marketing/communication to continue expanding the project.

The document discusses the renewable energy system of El Hierro Island. It describes how the island generates 100% of its electricity from renewable sources using 5 wind turbines and a pumped-storage hydroelectricity plant. The plant pumps water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir when wind power production is high, and the water is then released to turbines to generate electricity when demand is higher than wind power output. The system saves money on fossil fuel costs and reduces CO2 emissions while providing electricity independent of connections to other grids. Local ownership of the energy system circulates financial benefits back into the local economy.

The document discusses key trends related to sustainability and the environment, including educating consumers. It covers 3 key drivers:
1) Product waste - Consumers are more aware of brands' environmental impacts and retailers must demonstrate transparency in processes and end-of-life plans.
2) Education - Brands are assigning value to natural resources and exploring waste as a renewable source. Designers are making processes more sustainable.
3) Interactive tech - Technology use is integral to lives and retailers must use it to enhance shopping experiences and create convenience.
The document discusses sustainability and becoming more environmentally friendly or "green". It notes that while the Earth has existed for billions of years, humans have only been around for a few million and have only been unable to drink water or eat anywhere for around 500 years. It advocates working with natural laws like how nature uses only the energy it needs and has no waste. Some steps on the journey to becoming greener mentioned are using biobased raw materials, biomimicry, becoming carbon neutral, improving energy efficiency, and reducing waste. An example is given of a student design challenge to create a biomimicry-inspired backpack tent. The document promotes becoming more sustainable and green as creating a better world.

The document discusses using real-world zoos and academic psychology research to promote conservation action. It describes how zoos can influence visitor attitudes and emotions to encourage pro-environmental behaviors. Studies showed zoo experiences can shift perspectives but don't necessarily lead to actions. Partnerships between zoos, universities, and conservation groups developed behavioral models testing how visitor emotions impact post-visit behaviors. The research identified emotionally arousing experiences and measured changes in attitudes and intentions toward conservation actions. While most attitudes did not change, the studies provided insights into improving behavior change messaging and identifying impactful actions for zoos to promote.

My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

13. The issue of Trust Where is the information from? Do I trust the source? Does the information ‘feel’ right?
14. There are plenty of mis-matches which undermine trust If it’s that bad, why aren't the Government doing something If the problem is a big as they say, how can changing a few light bulbs help…? My energy company is telling me to reduce the amount of energy I use … but surely they want me to use lots so they make money…?

On November 1st 2009 the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology received the Leading Edge Award for “Best Visitor Experience” on the exhibition “Klima X”. “Klima X” shows the causes, effects and possible solutions to global warming. Visitors must put on rubber boots to enter the exhibition area. The exhibition floor is covered with 10 cm of water to illustrate the effect of increasing sea level. Enormous melting ice cubes symbolise the melting of the Arctic ice cap. The visitors use remote controlled boats to visit different geographical places around the world. By entering one of the harbours with the boat, the visitor can start a short movie featuring a climate witness telling how global climate change is affecting their lives today. Please note that a full exhibition description can be downloaded from here: http://www.exhibitfiles.org/dfile2/ReviewWalkthrough/365/original/Klima__X__New.pdf The exhibition has also been reviewed at ExhibitFiles here: http://www.exhibitfiles.org/klima_x Objectives: The exhibition Klima X had as principal objective to create an exciting, challenging, educating and popular interactive exhibition on global climate change. Sub-goals were Increase the knowledge about the climate system and global climate change, Show why research in the Polar Regions is important for the understanding of global climate change Increase the knowledge on how to reduce the negative impact of human activities Give the visitors a physical experience of the consequences of global climate change Show the visitors how global climate change is affecting peoples life around the world today Use interactive installations to challenge visitors on controversial issues Have a visitor number of at least 350.000 visitors during the exhibition period, at least 100.000 pupils of which 10.000 are attending the educational program Dr. Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, director of the IPCC and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and the Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, opened the exhibition on December 11, 2007.
