Dr Google can cause cyberchondria, therapy delays, and poor healthcare choices due to several factors:
- Sensational search results prioritize rare diseases
- Neglect of probability biases users towards alarming possibilities
- Choice architecture online does not consider behavioral science
Improving medical choice architecture and reducing sensationalism online could help address these issues. Designing interfaces and information presentation with behavioral science in mind may help users make better healthcare decisions. While verifying information is important, it is also necessary to guide users' perceptions and choices through sensitive design.

Presentation given at the NIH-NIDDK Fourth Artificial Pancreas Workshop in Bethesda, MD. Makes the case for why device makers and cloud providers should publish their data and control protocols to foster an ecosystem of innovation, applications and interoperability for people living with Type 1 Diabetes.
This was a keynote address to Food and Farm Care in Saskatoon, SK Canada, December 14, 2016. The talk centered on strategies for ag producers to be more effective in communication at the public interface about any "hot button" issue in farming and food, issues like hormones, antibiotics, GMO or pesticides. There is a clear method to help the public understand how these technologies work, as well as their relative risk and benefit. A lot has to do with trust. This strategy speaks about these topics as well as how to be an improved voice in social media.

e-Patient Dave's keynote address at the 2013 Saskatchewan Health Care Quality Summit. For more information about the summit, visit www.qualitysummit.ca. Follow @QualitySummit on Twitter.
E-Patient Dave's presentation, "Let patients help: The most under-used member of the health care team", closed the Summit with a bang and a standing ovation.
Dave deBronkart, a survivor of Stage IV liver cancer, may be the leading spokesperson for the e-Patient movement. E-Patients are Empowered, Engaged, Equipped and Enabled and Expert. They know more about their own health, and their health care experience, than any other member of their care team. Dave shared his own story about becoming an e-Patient, and left us inspired and informed about how to “let patients help” improve health care.
Title: Sense of Taste
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the structure and function of taste buds.
Describe the relationship between the taste threshold and taste index of common substances.
Explain the chemical basis and signal transduction of taste perception for each type of primary taste sensation.
Recognize different abnormalities of taste perception and their causes.
Key Topics:
Significance of Taste Sensation:
Differentiation between pleasant and harmful food
Influence on behavior
Selection of food based on metabolic needs
Receptors of Taste:
Taste buds on the tongue
Influence of sense of smell, texture of food, and pain stimulation (e.g., by pepper)
Primary and Secondary Taste Sensations:
Primary taste sensations: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Umami
Chemical basis and signal transduction mechanisms for each taste
Taste Threshold and Index:
Taste threshold values for Sweet (sucrose), Salty (NaCl), Sour (HCl), and Bitter (Quinine)
Taste index relationship: Inversely proportional to taste threshold
Taste Blindness:
Inability to taste certain substances, particularly thiourea compounds
Example: Phenylthiocarbamide
Structure and Function of Taste Buds:
Composition: Epithelial cells, Sustentacular/Supporting cells, Taste cells, Basal cells
Features: Taste pores, Taste hairs/microvilli, and Taste nerve fibers
Location of Taste Buds:
Found in papillae of the tongue (Fungiform, Circumvallate, Foliate)
Also present on the palate, tonsillar pillars, epiglottis, and proximal esophagus
Mechanism of Taste Stimulation:
Interaction of taste substances with receptors on microvilli
Signal transduction pathways for Umami, Sweet, Bitter, Sour, and Salty tastes
Taste Sensitivity and Adaptation:
Decrease in sensitivity with age
Rapid adaptation of taste sensation
Role of Saliva in Taste:
Dissolution of tastants to reach receptors
Washing away the stimulus
Taste Preferences and Aversions:
Mechanisms behind taste preference and aversion
Influence of receptors and neural pathways
Impact of Sensory Nerve Damage:
Degeneration of taste buds if the sensory nerve fiber is cut
Abnormalities of Taste Detection:
Conditions: Ageusia, Hypogeusia, Dysgeusia (parageusia)
Causes: Nerve damage, neurological disorders, infections, poor oral hygiene, adverse drug effects, deficiencies, aging, tobacco use, altered neurotransmitter levels
Neurotransmitters and Taste Threshold:
Effects of serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) on taste sensitivity
Supertasters:
25% of the population with heightened sensitivity to taste, especially bitterness
Increased number of fungiform papillae
Basavarajeeyam is an important text for ayurvedic physician belonging to andhra pradehs. It is a popular compendium in various parts of our country as well as in andhra pradesh. The content of the text was presented in sanskrit and telugu language (Bilingual). One of the most famous book in ayurvedic pharmaceutics and therapeutics. This book contains 25 chapters called as prakaranas. Many rasaoushadis were explained, pioneer of dhatu druti, nadi pareeksha, mutra pareeksha etc. Belongs to the period of 15-16 century. New diseases like upadamsha, phiranga rogas are explained.

49. Me: “Hi Dr Google, thanks for seeing me today,
I know doctors are very busy!”
Dr Google: “You are not wrong, 20 billion
health queries last month. I am working 24/7 just
to keep up. What can I help you with today?”
50. Me: “Well doctor, as of late I have been
experiencing night sweats, I have woken up a
few times in the last 2 weeks in a cold sweat and
the bed sheets soaking wet.”
Dr Google: “Cancer.”
Me: “Shit really?”
51. Dr Google: “Probably not. I just wanted to get it
out it out there because Cancer generates the
most interest.”
Me: “Oh right, what else could it be?”
Dr Google: “Anxiety. The Menopause…”
Me: I doubt it is the menopause…”
52. Dr Google: “I’m not here to discuss
probabilities. You can ask around in the waiting
room and see if anyone there can help you.”
Me: “But I am only young, I don’t have a family
history of Cancer, I’ve been stressed lately, I
thought it might be that…?”
53. Dr Google: “Well I cannot look at your case
specifically. Cancer, hormones or stress that is
all I can tell you.
Besides, I am not sure why you have come to me
as I am an osteopath. Have a good day.”
Me: “Thanks Dr Google!” - goes home and
