Forever 21, Inc., headquartered in Los
Angeles, California, is a fashion retailer
of women's, men's and kids clothing and
accessories and is known for offering
the most current fashion trends at a
great value to consumers.
How It
Started
The chain, originally known as Fashion 21, was
intended for kids and teens in search of
fashionable pieces at more than reasonable
prices
Two poor Korean immigrants, Do Won Chang
and his wife, Jin Sook Chang, founded the first
Forever 21 store in Los Angeles, California
In 1984 as a true family run operation after
they arrived to the US in 1981. Before opening
their first store, Do Won Chang worked to make
ends meet – he did janitorial work and worked
at a gas station and a coffee shop.
The flagship store sold mostly trendy Korean
designs targeted at Los Angeles’ Korean
American community. With their unbeatable
prices, other Los Angeles teens began
attracting to the store and the Chang’s
realized the possibility for expansion.
Their system worked. The store made
$700,000 in sales its first year. Over the next
few years, Chang opened more stores and
eventually the chain was renamed Forever 21..
The company's mission is to
provide shoppers with an
unprecedented selection of today's
fashions with affordable prices.
