Don’t Selfie and Drive
It is a huge selfie world – all of us
are just living in it. No matter where
you travel or which social media
platforms you use, selfies are
everywhere you look. Whether the
photos are groups, with a public
figure, or solo shots, selfies are
dominating the culture.
As you may imagine, traffic safety
authorities took notice around the
country. In New York, the NY
Department of Motor Vehicles, along
with the Governor’s Traffic Safety
Committee, issued an advisory to residents to not just avoid the harmful
activity yet to report it to local officials if they see this type of reckless
behavior.
47 states banned all drivers from texting and driving
Most states, in an attempt to buckle down on distracted drivers, passed laws
that forbid motorists from utilizing their handheld devices for purposes of
texting. Also, more than 12 states currently forbid drivers from taking phone
calls while in the car, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration and the Governors Highway Safety Administration.
Since this ban, a few states made the penalties more serious and required
that violators pay massive fines, and in some instances, even went so far as
to suspend drivers’ licenses. Police authorities are utilizing a variety of
strategies to monitor drivers, with some even tagging along beside
commercial truck drivers. With the big rigs being a lot taller and larger than
regular passenger vehicles, authorities now have a better vantage point.
Experts in the consumer safety industry point out that eventually, the only
way to end these distracted driving practices is through the use of self-
policing, in which drivers take it upon themselves to never, ever text while
driving.

Distraction.gov, a site maintained and formed by the United States
Department of Transportation, currently features news stories on a daily
basis from across the country, explaining how many car accidents occur
from driving while texting. Motorists are encouraged on the website to Take
the Pledge, and vow to remain phone-free whenever they are in the car.
As the campaign puts it, ‘A single call or text could wreck it all.’ Therefore,
everyone, please leave all selfies outside of your car!
