HelloMy name is Shay Askew and this presentation will looks at the problem of abused, neglected and unwanted children that end up being part of the foster care system. I will be describing some issues associated with abuse and the foster care system and then I will discuss the doctrine of "adoption” and the practical implications this doctrine has on the issue of abuse and those that are or have been part of the Foster Care system.
The primary purpose of Foster Care service is to provide a safe temporary placement for children who cannot remain safely in the home of their parent(s). The children are in the custody of the Department of Social Services by court order.The goal of foster care is to implement a plan for permanency for each child,If the child cannot be returned home to the parents, Reunification with parents;Adoption (by a relative or non-relative),Guardianship/custody (with a relative or non-relative),
Physical AbuseGenerally, physical abuse is characterized by physical injury, such as bruises and fractures that result from:Punching,Beating,kicking,Biting,Shaking,Throwing,Stabbing,Choking,Hitting with a hand, stick, strap, or other object,BurningPsychologicalMaltreatmentPsychological maltreatment - refers to conveying to children that they are worthless, flawed, unloved, unwanted, endangered, or only of value in meeting another's needs.”Spurning (e.g., belittling, hostile rejecting, ridiculing);Terrorizing (e.g., threatening violence against a child, placing a child in a recognizably dangerous situation);Isolating (e.g., confining the child, placing unreasonable limitations on the child's freedom of movement, restricting the child from social interactions);Exploiting or corrupting (e.g., modeling antisocial behavior such as criminal activities, encouraging prostitution, permitting substance abuse);Denying emotional responsiveness (e.g., ignoring the child's attempts to interact, failing to express affection);Sexual AbuseChild sexual abuse generally refers to sexual acts, sexually motivated behaviors involving children, or sexual exploitation of children.Oral, anal, or genital penile penetration;Anal or genital digital or other penetration;Genital contact with no intrusion;Fondling of a child's breasts or buttocks;Indecent ExposureInadequate or inappropriate supervision of a child's voluntary sexual activities;Use of a child in prostitution, pornography, Internet crimes, or other sexually exploitative activities.
Conversion – you have returned to God, you have repented of your sins, have asked for forgiveness, and you turn back to JesusJustification – based on the work of Christ on the cross, a sinner is now considered righteous because of the righteousness of Christ. Imputation Union w/Christ – we are made one with Christ. He’s in us and we are in himYour status and condition changes from sinner to Child of God. We become favored by God and we look to God with affection and trust. When we are adopted we are restore to our rightful place with God. We lost our place due to sin. But scripture afte scripture tells us that we are God’s offspring's, Acts 17:24-29. As a child of God he lovingly disciplines us, Hebrews 12:5-9. He gives us good and perfect gifts, James 1:17. God is the Father of us all, Malachi 2:10.
We are forgiven. God is compassionate and kind towards us because he loves us. Those that have experience the negatives of the Foster Care system do not know or have every experiences this type of compassionate or love. The doctrine of adoption provides this benefits.Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.Romans 5:1, Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:We have Reconciliation. This means that at some point we were at odds with God. This was due to our sins. However, because Christ has reconciled us, we are now friends with God.Romans 5: 8, 10 But God commended his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.WE have Liberty. This means that we are free. Not free in the sense that we can do whatever we want or live however we want. We are free in that we do not fear as to what will happen to us if we do not live up to the law. We freely obey the law out of the Love we have for a kind and loving Father. Romans 8:14-16, For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:Galatians 3:10-11, For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.Discipline is also part of the doctrine of adoption. When you are a child of God, God your father loving disciplines you. Some times discipline is not pleasant at the moment but in the long run the benefits of the disciple becomes evident. Disciple in part of love. It’s an action that suggest that someone wants the best for you. Proverbs 3:11-12, My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline,and do not resent his rebuke,because the Lord disciplines those he loves as a father the son he delights in
God loves us and it because he loves us that he has adopted us as his children. The issues that are experienced by those that have been in the Foster Care system, I say to you that you are wanted, you are worthy and you are accepted.
