Visual Studio 2017 Launch local event in Guatemala City. I did a brief introduction to Docker and showed how easily integrates into VS. I also did two deployments to Azure: one for a single container app to Azure App Service and other one to Azure Container Service for a multi container app using Visual Studio Team Services.

"Typically enterprise applications are deployed as processes on Virtual Machines or as Containers. For example, applications can be deployed on Amazon EC2 instances or as Docker containers in on-premise Kubernetes cluster. Both the strategies have their own pros and cons. While VMs are portable and secure, they are also bulky and time consuming to bring up. Containers on the other hand are lightweight, portable and can be launched very quickly, but their security concerns remain.
Even though traditional containers (such as Docker) isolate the application process namespace from other containers, they share the host OS kernel. Considering the number of un-trusted applications that are run as containers, the entire host OS can be compromised. Even though the community has come up with a variety of tools for scanning vulnerabilities (such as Clair) and modules for enhancing the security (such as AppArmor & SELinux), the onus is on the administrator to use these tools and make the environment secure. In this presentation we explore Virtualized Containers, an evolving container technology which inherently provides security by design without compromising on speed and flexibility."

Containers and VMs and Clouds: Oh My. by Mike Coleman
As containers move from the developer's workstation into production environments there are many questions about how they fit into a company's existing infrastructure. Should a workload run in a VM or in a container? Should that container run on physical or virtual? In the data center or in the cloud?
The reality is that there is no "right" answer, just a series of questions that admins should be asking as they look to figure out where to run their application workloads. In this talk we'll take a look at the key differences between containers and VMs. From there we'll discuss the coexistence of VMs and containers, and finally we'll take a look at key factors to consider when making the decision where to run your applications. Throughout the presentation we'll highlight real world customers, their problems, and their ultimate deployment decisions.

Interest in deploying software using Docker containers has been growing very quickly. Clients are hearing all the "buzz" around Docker and beginning to investigate how they can take advantage of this new technology. In the latest v2.1 release of IBM PureApplication, support has been added that allows clients to easily create patterns that deploy Docker containers as software components using the pattern editor. Now clients can build upon the skills they already have with patterns and easily add Docker containers. Because the new support for Docker is integrated with the existing patterns, the new technology can be added incrementally at a pace that makes sense for the customer's business. There is no need to "start all over again" in order to exploit Docker.

7 Container Design Patterns
