DNA sequencing involves reading the base sequences that come before and after a target gene to get an accurate read, as the beginning and end of reads can be noisy. For example, a simplified gene of three bases, ATG, would have the two bases before and two bases after sequenced as well to give the full sequence of TTATGCA.
