This document provides instructions for several activities to teach students about DNA: 1. A presentation is given on DNA structure and composition. 2. An experiment is conducted to extract DNA from onions using soap, salt, and meat tenderizer to break open cells and release DNA, which is then precipitated with alcohol. 3. Students make a model of DNA by using licorice as the backbone and differently colored mini marshmallows to represent nucleotide base pairs attached with toothpicks. 4. A "CSI-style" mystery game is played where students solve a fictional crime by answering questions correctly to receive DNA clues that identify the suspect.
