Probabilistic Programming for Dynamic Data Assimilation on an Agent-Based ModelNick Malleson
Usually in computer programming, variables are usually assigned to specific values (e.g. a virtual person in a computer simulation might have an 'age' variable which stores a number). Probabilistic programming, on the other hand, allows you to represent _random variables_. These are variables whose values we do not know precisely, so can be represented by a probability distribution rather than a single value.
This is potentially a very elegant way of capturing uncertainty in our models. However, using the probabilistic programming approach for agent-based modelling raises a number of questions. In the following slides, LIDA data science intern Luke Archer introduces his recent work that explores the use of probabilistic programming libraries for building agent-based models.

Database Migration: Simple, Cross-Engine and Cross-Platform Migrations with ...Amazon Web Services
Learn how you can migrate databases with minimal downtime from on-premises and Amazon EC2 environments to Amazon RDS, Amazon Redshift, Amazon Aurora and EC2 databases using AWS Database Migration Service. We'll discuss homogeneous (e.g. Oracle-to-Oracle, PostgreSQL-to-PostgreSQL, etc.) and heterogeneous (e.g. Oracle to Aurora, SQL Server to MariaDB) database migrations. We'll also talk about the new AWS Schema Conversion Tool that saves you development time when migrating your Oracle and SQL Server database schemas, including PL/SQL and T-SQL procedural code, to their MySQL, MariaDB and Aurora equivalents. Best of all, we'll spend most of the time demonstrating the product and showing use cases designed to help your business.

The efficiency of all industrial and military equipment's deteriorates with time. Sometimes the equipment fails completely and effects the whole system. The maintenance costs (running costs) of an equipment also go on increasing with time. Thus it becomes more economical to replace the old equipment with a new one. Hence there is a need to formulae a most economical replacement policy which is in the best interest of the system.

Data Partitioning in Mongo DB with CloudIJAAS Team
Cloud computing offers various and useful services like IAAS, PAAS SAAS for deploying the applications at low cost. Making it available anytime anywhere with the expectation to be it scalable and consistent. One of the technique to improve the scalability is Data partitioning. The alive techniques which are used are not that capable to track the data access pattern. This paper implements the scalable workload-driven technique for polishing the scalability of web applications. The experiments are carried out over cloud using NoSQL data store MongoDB to scale out. This approach offers low response time, high throughput and less number of distributed transaction. The result of partitioning technique is conducted and evaluated using TPC-C benchmark.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Distributed in memory processing of all k nearest neighbor queries
1. Distributed In-Memory Processing of All k Nearest Neighbor Queries
Abstract:
A wide spectrum of Internet-scale mobile applications, ranging from social
networking, gaming and entertainment to emergency response and crisis
management, all require efficient and scalable All k Nearest Neighbor (AkNN)
computations over millions of moving objects every few seconds to be
operational. Most traditional techniques for computing AkNN queries are
centralized, lacking both scalability and efficiency. Only recently, distributed
techniques for shared-nothing cloud infrastructures have been proposed to
achieve scalability for large datasets. These batch-oriented algorithms are sub-
optimal due to inefficient data space partitioning and data replication among
processing units. In this paper, we present Spitfire, a distributed algorithm that
provides a scalable and high-performance AkNN processing framework. Our
proposed algorithm deploys a fast load-balanced partitioning scheme along with
an efficient replication-set selection algorithm, to provide fast main-memory
computations of the exact AkNN results in a batch-oriented manner. We evaluate,
both analytically and experimentally, how the pruning efficiency of the Spitfire
algorithm plays a pivotal role in reducing communication and response time up to
an order of magnitude, compared to three other state-of-the-art distributed
AkNN algorithms executed in distributed main-memory.
