This document provides an overview of the Kumbh Mela 2019 held in Prayagraj, India. It discusses the astrological significance of the Kumbh Mela cycle and highlights that millions of pilgrims gather at Prayagraj every 12 years for holy dips in the sacred rivers. The document also outlines the research methodology used and objectives to analyze the social and economic impacts of the massive religious festival on the local population and pilgrims.
Kumbh Mela is the largest peaceful gathering in the world, attracting over 100 million people to four sacred rivers in India every 12 years to bathe and pray for salvation. According to Hindu theology, drops of nectar fell at these locations when gods and demons churned the ocean for immortality. The origins of the Kumbh Mela tradition date back centuries, with pilgrims gathering at the rivers to commemorate this holy legend. Over time, the Kumbh Mela has grown substantially in scale and international attention, though it also faces challenges of overcrowding, accidents, and commercialization.

Ujjain gets direct trains from all over India and is accessible from Indore (60 kms) and therefore an important pilgrim center in India. Ujjain is typically visited along with Omkareshwar as a part of Jyotirlinga Getaway. Situated on the banks of Sacred River Shipra, Ujjain is one of the four places in India where the famous Kumbh Mela takes place. This holy festival is held here every 12 years relating to the position of stars and planets. According to Hindu mythology, the nectar which came out from the ocean during its churning by Gods and Demons, fell at four places and Ujjain was one of them. That is the reason of Ujjain being a venue for the Kumbh Mela.

DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM CIRCUIT: A CASE OF KABIRVADSTATUE OF UNITY-SARDAR SARO...Yash Shah
In Kevadiya, the mighty Narmada flows between the Satpura and Vindhayachal, slyly giving way
to a smooth four-lane highway that leads to two remarkable structures: the Statue of Unity and the
Sardar Sarovar Dam. Twice, it seems, the country has looked at Kevadia and both times in scale,
the result has been quite remarkable. Driving up the highway, one can certainly rejoice in the fact
that the Statue of Unity is far removed from the bustle of the cities.
“Kevadiya is a shining example of eco-friendly development. On one side there is the dam and
power generation equipment and on the other, there are beautiful eco-tourism sites around SoU”.
After all, the charm of concrete skylines would fade rather quickly. Erecting the statue in a
nondescript town not only puts it on the tourist map but also creates a playground of opportunities,
one that the state government has been efficient to act upon.
In Kevadiya there were new tourist facilities like eco-tourism site, nursery, butterfly garden and
others will generate employment opportunities for the locals who would get big market for their
vegetables, fruits and milk. However shrouded in controversy it may be, our first glance at the
Statue of Unity was enough to make us gasp quite audibly. There was nothing quite like it. The
sheer size of it seemed unfathomable, my whole self as tall as Sardar Patel’s tiniest toe.

This document discusses the challenges of rapid urbanization and associated land use changes within the Mara River Basin in Kenya. It notes that urban population growth rates in small and intermediate towns within the basin are almost double the national average. Many of these towns lack adequate planning capacity, leading to uncontrolled urban sprawl and increased land development. This has consequences for land cover and water resources as urban areas encroach on sensitive ecosystems. The study analyzed selected towns in the basin to understand the spatial dynamics of urban growth and their impacts. The findings can inform better planning of urban development and land use to promote sustainable management of resources like water in the Mara River Basin.

Kumbh Mela 2019
Kumbh is the great bathing festival of Prayagraj. It is celebrated in a cycle of
twelve years when the Sun is in Capricorn and Jupiter is in Taurus. at the
confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati in Uttar Pradesh.
Each site’s celebration is based on a distinct set of astrological positions of the
Sun, the Moon, and the Jupiter. The celebrations occur at the exact moment when
these positions are fully occupied, as it is considered to be the holiest time in
Hinduism. The Kumbh Mela is an event that intrinsically encapsulates the
science of astronomy, astrology, spirituality, ritualistic traditions, and socio-
cultural customs and practices, making it extremely rich in knowledge.

According to the Puranas, the legendary churning of the ocean by the gods
(Devas) and demons (Danavas) yielded, amongst other things, a jar (Kumbha)
full of nectar (Amrita). Gods did not like to share it with demons. At the
instance of Indra, the master of gods, his son Jayanta tried to run away with the
jar and was naturally followed by some of the demons.
During the struggle for its possession lasting over twelve days in the heaven, a
few drops of the nectar dropped at the four places, corresponding with
Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nasik on the earth. The Drops of nectar were well
received by the holy rivers at these places. It is to commemorate the sprinkling
of ambrosia into the sacred waters of Shipra that the Simhastha festival is
celebrated at Ujjain. Festival at the other three places are known by the more
popular name Kumbha The cycle of twelve Years is common to all the four
places. As the struggle for the possession of the nectar-jar (Amrita-Kumbha)
lasted for twelve days in the heaven, the corresponding period turned out to be
twelve years on the earth, for the human beings.
Different planetary positions, like the crossing of Jupitar into Leo sign and
certain other conjunctions for the fair at Ujjain, are noted for the kumbha-fair at
these other places also. Besides being a city of remarkable cultural traditions,
Ujjain is cited among the seven cities of sacred merit in India. Mahakaleshwar
temple and the holy shipra have always attracted countless people to visit Ujjain
through out the ages. The crowd of pilgrims and saints of various sects running
into millions during the Kumbh presents a picture of mini India at Prayagraj and
one can well visualise here, as to what invisible forces bind this great Nation
together.
It finds mention in the Hindu mythological tale of churning of the cosmic ocean
by the gods and the demons, with Vasuki, the serpent as the rope. It is believed
that the ocean bed first yielded fourteen gems, then Lakshmi, the goddess of
wealth, and finally the coveted vessel of Nectar. In the wild scramble for
immortality, with the demons chasing the Gods across the skies, a few drops of
the Nectar spilt from the vessel and fell at Haridwar, Nasik, Prayag, and Ujjain.
Therefore, the Kumbh Parva is celebrated at the interval of every twelve years
at these places.

On the occasion of this pious Parva lakhs of pilgrims from India and abroad

procession of the seers and sages moving towards the Triveni Sangam for the
holy dip. These religious leaders stay in Prayagraj during the whole Kumbh
period and take bath on specific bath-days with freat faith and enthusiasm with
their sectorial banners (Nisanas).
During the Kumbh Mela every pilgrim after taking the bath visits the temple
and humbly bows down before the Lord. The sight of the temple is very
enchanting and rarely seen on that occasion. The law and order situations are
well-planned and very alert then. The whole atmosphere echoes with the Har

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This paper is based upon Content Analysis and review of literature
and secondary data collected from various websites, journals,
magazines, newspapers and reference books. Literature review has
shown prior research work done in this area.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE –
The main objective of the research is to analyze the social and
economic aspect of the Kumbh Mela 2019, held at Allahabad, from
the point of view of pilgrims as well as institution. And also, it is
voluntary to measure the satisfaction level of the pilgrims towards the
facilities and arrangements made by the government.
SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH –
The Kumbh Mela is considered as the biggest gathering of humans at
a time on the planet. It was given an authorization of a district for 2
months period. The estimated worth of Kumbh Mela 2019 was 4200
crore Rupees, creating around 8.5 lakhs jobs, and therefore justifying
the scope of the study. Therefore, there was a vast scope to study the
social and economic aspects of the demography, which was actually
attracting the researchers from all over the world.
Prayagraj earlier known as Allahabad is a sacred town situated on the
banks of the river Ganga & Yamuna. It is about 200 km from Uttar
Pradesh (India) State capital Lucknow. In the Last Maha Kumbh 2013
approximate 100 million pilgrims, making it the largest temporary
10. 10
gathering of people in the world at that time. A temporary city
covering an area larger than Athens was set up to accommodate the
crowds. Sunday, 10th February was considered the most auspicious
day, and 30 million people descended to Allahabad to bathe at
the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganges rivers, which the
faithful believe purify their souls and lead them to salvation. Kumbh
in accordance with the astrological cycles, takes place every twelve
years. Pilgrims of every origin and background congregate for this
festival. The millions of pilgrims will be there not only to bathe but
also to watch, and sometimes to participate in grand processions,
religious conferences, and initiation ceremonies, while worshipping at
the hundreds of shrines at the site and seeking blessings from the tens
of thousands of holy saints and sages.
Therefore, through previous researches and collection of data
several points regarding issues, recommendations and areas to be
focused have been verified and is mentioned in our Research
Content.

RESEARCH AREA AND IT’S SIGNIFICANCE
IMPORTANCE OFPRAYAGRAJ
Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to
bathe in a sacred river. It is the world's largest religious gathering. It is held
every third year at one of the four places by rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad
(Prayag), Nasik and Ujjain. Thus the Kumbh Mela is held at each of these four
places every twelfth year. Ardh ("Half") KumbhMela is held at only two places,
Haridwar and Allahabad, every sixth year. The rivers at these four places are:
the Ganges at Haridwar, the confluence (Sangam) of the Ganges and the
Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati at Allahabad, the Godawar at Nasik, and
the Shipra at Ujjain.
Kumbh means a pitcher and Mela means fair in Hindi. The pilgrimage is held
for about one and a half months at each of these four places where it is believed
in Hinduism that drops of nectar fell from the Kumbh carried by gods after the
sea was churned. The festival is billed as the "world's largest congregation of
religious pilgrims". number of There is no scientific method of ascertaining
the pilgrims, and the estimates of the number of pilgrims bathing on the
most auspicious day may vary; approximately 100 million people attended the
last MahaKumbhMela 2013 at Allahabad.
MauniAmavasya traditionally attracted the largest crowds at the Kumbhmela,
held from 14 January 2013 to 10 March 2013 in Allahabad.10 February 2013
was the biggest bathing day with 13 Akharas taken bath to sangam, and
probably the largest human gathering on a single day. Over 45 million devotees
and aesthetics took holy dip on the occasion of MauniAmavasya.
12. 12
KUMBH MELA—PRAYAGRAJ
Kumbh The celebration of KumbhMela takes place at the four sacred places as
per the position of Sun and Jupiter in different zodiac signs Pilgrims to the
Kumbh Mela come from all sections of the religion ranging from Sadhus (saints)
and Naga Sadhus who practice ‘sadhana’ and keenly follow a strict path of
spiritual discipline, to Hermits who leave their seclusion and come to visit the
civilization only during the Kumbh Mela, to seekers of spirituality, and to
common people practicing Hinduism.
During the Kumbh Mela, a number of ceremonies take place; the traditional
procession of Akharas called ‘Peshwai’ on elephant backs, horses and chariots,
the shining swords and rituals of Naga Sadhus during ‘Shahi Snaan’, and many
other cultural activities that attract millions of pilgrims to attend the Kumbh
Mela.
On the occasion of KumbhMela the divinity and spiritual aroma of Ujjain
meets its highest peak when millions of pilgrims take dips and worship sacred
River Shipra. Sages and devotees from every nook and corner attend the
religious ceremony of Kumbh Mela to attain salvation and libration from
the vicious cycle of birth-death-rebirth.
According The commemoration of Mela at Prayagraj is known as 'KumbhMela'
in which the unique combination of divinity and purity is experienced when the
crowd of ash-dubbed sages, priests, devotees gets fused together with the
roaring of elephants and camels. People who witness the spiritual fest feel good
fortune by their side and sense positive aroma purifying their souls and
thoughts. Major attraction of this festival is 'ShahiSnan' (royal bath)which
takes place on predetermined dates varying every year. It is believed that
those who take royal bath at confluences of Ganga & Yamuna River on the
occasion of KumbhMela wash their sins of all previous births. The devotees
consider it as an opportunity to get them revived from the never ending birth
cycle.
13. 13
ASTROLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE
KumbhMela is held at each of the four places namely Haridwar, Allahabad
(Prayag), senergy travels all around the place during this holy event. It’s a social
harmony where you get to see many saints and sadhakas gathering at one place.
This event even gives you the chance of seeking the blessings of these pious
saints.
The position of the Sun, Moon and Jupiter in different zodiac signs determines
the location of the Kumbh in each of these places.
Kumbh in Haridwar : When the Sun is in the zodiac sign Aries and Jupiter is
in Aquarius it is held in Haridwar.
Kumbh in Prayag : When the Sun is in Capricorn and Jupiter is in Taurus, it is
held in Allahabad (Prayag).
Kumbh in Nasik : When Jupiter enters the zodiac sign Leo it is held in Nasik.
It is also held in Nasik, when Jupiter, Sun and Moon enter the zodiac sign
Cancer on Amavasya.
Kumbh in Ujjain : Ujjain, one of the most sacred places in India, is located on
the banks of the sacred river Kshipra in the western region of Madhya Pradesh.
Kumbh in Ujjain is held when a rare configuration of planets takes place which
happens once in 12 years. When the Sun is in the zodiac sign Aries and Jupiter
in the zodiac Leo, it is held in Ujjain. Considering its relevance to the zodiac
‘Leo’ meaning ‘Simha’ in Sanskrit, the Kumbh is also referred to as
‘SimhasthKumbh’.
It is the great bathing festival which sees lakhs of devotees coming together
from across the world to celebrate this month long congregation. The
ceremonial bathing takes place in the holy River Kshipra on the full moon day
of Chaitra month and continues in different intervals during the entire month of
Vaishakh, culminating on the tenth full moon day.
14. 14
The Sadhus at the Kumbh Mela
The sadhus and other holy men are an integral part of the Kumbh Mela.
Pilgrims who attend the Kumbh Mela come to see and listen to these holy
MEN, in order to gain spiritual enlightenment.
There are various types of sadhus:
Nagas — Naked sadhus who smear their bodies with ash and have long matted
hair.Constant exposure to the weather makes them resistant to temperature
extremes. Their eyes are bloodshot from constantly smoking charas (marijuana),
which they believe aids enlightenment.
Urdhwavahurs — who have emaciated bodies from rigid spiritual practices.
Parivajakas — who have taken a vow of silence.
Shirshasinse — who remain standing, sleep with their heads resting on a
vertical pole, and meditate standing on their heads.
Kalpvasis — who remain by the river banks and devote their time to
meditating, performing rituals, and bathing numerous times a day.
Activities During Mela
If you go by the Hindu mythologies, then this is the only time and place in the
world where you can unburden your sins and achieve ‘Nirvana’ from the
vicious cycle of birth and re birth. Take dips in the holy water of Ganges that is
said to wash away all the sins of a person. Light a Diya and make a wish, they
do come true.
To live among the Sadhus, who have dedicated their entire lives in meditation
and fulfilling spiritual deeds is indeed a unique experience of life. In Haridwar
there are many such Ashrams where tourists can stay to enjoy the life of a saint
besides indulging into various Yoga and Meditation regimes.
Taking dip in a day, attending yoga classes, listening to the divine lectures and
participating in the cultural programmes are just a few of the activities that one
can enjoy during the famous Kumbh Mela.

PROBLEMS AND ISSUES ENCOUNTER
1. Solid waste management -In this large conglomeration of people
from different parts of the world, gathered at one place and perform many
rituals, they offers garland other materials for worshipping the river but the
offerings remained in the water for fairly long period of time the water is
further polluted by the flow of untreated water inside the river. Central as
well as local govt. should take some major actions to manage the solid waste
material in the particular area.
2. Accommodation for public - Big companies takes the tender for
the preparation of accommodation units and provide the shelter for 30
million pilgrims.
3. Major incidents – whatever be the size of population visiting mela, it
is expected that there are zero deaths & no incidents that result in human life
loss, property loss etc. But despite of having all the safety measures for the
pilgrims there may be the chance of such incidents like stampede at the place
due to any reason which may cause human life loss.
4. Electricity and fire – There may be few isolated incidents which can
take place due to inappropriate management system for electricity and fire.
Govt. Should use copper wire instead of aluminium wire to minimize the
chances for short circuit& short falls, there can be many fire incidents due to
mishandling of the LPG cylinders also.
5. Fraud practices – Many guides and pujaris take extra money from the
tourists or from pilgrims who actually are the firm believer of the God, they
misguide them on the name of god and on many such rituals practices.
6. Risk assessment – Based on the hazards identified a proper risk
assessment should be carried out based on demographic, environmental, and
socio-political factors, the risk can be identified based on event type of
17. 17
duration and location, time, day and season of the event, expected crowd no;
age of crowd, weather and local hazards and surveillance for public health
and sanitation.
7. Traffic management – A proper display of direction and important
information will reduce chaotic situations in such events. Vehicle movement
needs to be closely monitored and regulated in the area of event, clear and
visible signs and directions at imp. Places, wide entry and exit routes.
8. Lack of accessibility in city– There should be proper transportation
facility for the pilgrims as well as for the general public who have to go to
their daily work from one place to another. Local city buses and taxis should
be available.
9. Medical aid and hospital preparedness – Evaluate plan and
prioritize medical healthcare needs for the mass gathering, planning for the
no. and location of on-site first aid posts and medical facilities, human
resource planning e.g. Ambulances, paramedies, safety& security officers.
10.Incident command centre / control rooms – To monitor,
manage and make decisions, a dedicated centre needs to be established.
An incident command centre will also act as an emergency operation centre.

to keep the Kumbh area clean and maintain the sanctity of the land. The
Karmcharis worked round the clock and were assisted in their endeavours by a
group of 1500 Swacchagrahis who helped in instigating behaviour change and
bestpractices. All over Kumbh, 20,000 dust bins with liner bags were placed and
there was a concerted effort to encourage visitors to dispose their waste only in
these dust bins. More than 1.15 lakh toilets were deployed to ensure it was an

BUSINESS WORTH OF KUMBH MELA 2019 - suggested that
airlines, hotels, tour operators and Uttar Pradesh in general are likely
to reap a windfall during the Maha Kumbh Mela in the state with the
government likely to see its coffers swelling by Rs 12,000 crore,
according to the reports of ASSOCHAM. The unorganized sector also
stands to gain substantially from the Kumbh, says the Associated
Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India Uttar Pradesh Tourism
and the Railways shared a revenue bonanza of a whopping Rs 1,500
crore along with airports and private hospitals by offering attractive
tours and medical tourism packages to the foreign and domestic
visitors thronging the region. The overall business worth of the
Kumbh Mela was analyzed to be Rs 15,000 crore. Hotels 2.5 lakh
jobs; Airlines and airports 1.5 lakh; Tour operators 45,000, Eco-
tourism and medical tourism 50,000 and Skilled and unskilled
workers for construction/ renovation 85,000. Also 55,000 new jobs in
the unorganised sector comprising tour guides, taxi drivers,
interpreters, volunteers, etc. and the employment generation potential
of the festival stood at a massive 6.35 lakh jobs.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR CORPORATE MARKET IN KUMBH MELA
2019- It is analyzed that, for dozens of companies such as JCB, the
world's largest religious celebration held every 12 years is sheer
marketing nirvana. The Kumbh Mela has always been a big business
opportunity, but this time companies are going the extra distance to
promote their brands by using traditional entertainment and modern
technology to connect with consumers. Mobile service provider
Vodafone India, for instance, was reaching out to consumers by
screening films and providing musical ear-muffs, wired with in-built
speakers that play devotional songs. GlaxoSmithKline Consumer
Healthcare had a basketball ring at its stall for people to shoot hoops
and win free biscuits with their cups of Horlicks while cosmetics
company Emami Ltd had set up massage kiosks for pilgrims to

experience its Navratna Oil brand. Coca-Cola India had chosen to go
high-tech and set up Wi-Fi services at 12 of its 16 stalls where people
can download free Coke-Studio music and other brand content such
as a new ad jingle . The strategy has paid off: it has logged more than
11,000 downloads a month since the nearly two-month fair began.
According to Infinity Advertising Services, the official advertising
firm for the 2013 Kumbh Mela, about 52 companies was at the fair.
According to an Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of
India report (ASSOCHAM. 2019), it bumped up Uttar Pradesh's
offers by Rs 12,000 crore, apart from generating employment for
airlines, airports, tour operators and a host of other sectors. As the
Kumbh Mela goes up market, visitors do not have to grunge it out in
makeshift tents anymore. For about Rs 15,000 a night, they can stay
in luxury tents offering all the creature comforts they want from tiled
bathrooms to buffet breakfasts.
