Discus Fish breeding can be very rewarding. This is a hobby
that most people enjoy to do. You should not jump into discus fish breeding until you
understand how to exactly care for them. They are very sensitive fish and if you understand
what it takes to keep them happy and healthy then it’s time to take a look at what you need to do
for successful discus fish breeding. I will be giving you 4 important tips for discus fish breeding

Discus Fish Breeding – Tip 1 – Water
Conditions
Discus owners should know that clean water is the number one thing that plays a big role in the
health of your fish. To make sure that the tank is clean you must remove uneaten food and waste
from the tank. Decaying food and waste can cause bacteria in the water that can be harmful to
them. You must also change out 25% of the water a couple times a week. Not only should the
water be clean but it has to be at the recommended temperature, the right pH level and be free of
heavy metals and ammonia. If the water is not clean, your discus fish can become ill and catch
diseases. If your discus fish is unhealthy you will not have success with discus fish breeding.

Discus Fish Breeding – Tip 2 – Nutritional Diet
Another important factor in discus fish breeding is nutrition. Your discus fish must maintain a
healthy diet. Make sure that you are feeding them food full of nutrients such as blood worms
and brine shrimp. You can feed your discus fish several times a day but make sure that you do
not feed them more than 5.

Discus Fish Breeding – Tip 3 – Determining if they have found a Mate

In order for discus fish breeding to occur, they must pair up. This is an issue that most people
have. You have several options when trying to pair up your fish. You cannot pick a mate for
them, they will pick their own. You can purchase a pair of discus fish that have mated in the past
but you will pay more for them. Another option is to purchase a group of six young fish
together. They will grow up together and pair off. Once they find a mate you will know it
because their behavior will change and they will start becoming aggressive when they feel others
are coming into their territory. Discus fish breeding can only occur when the fish is healthy so
make sure that the tank is clean.

Discus Fish Breeding – Tip 4 – The Breeding Tank

Once you notice that they are reading for breading, you should have a 20 gallon tank set aside
just for breeding. You have to include a vertical surface set aside for them to breed. This could
be a breeding cone or a flower pot turned update down. Don’t worry about any decorations; just
have a couple of plants for them to hide.

Once they mate and the fry are hatched, they should all stay together for a couple of weeks
because the fry eat off the parents flesh. After that, the fry should be placed in a separate tank
away from the parents so that they will not catch any parasites from them. The fry tank must also
maintain clean water conditions. The fry can be feed newly hatched brine shrimps or chopped
up blood worms. The parents should stay in the breeding tank so that the process can start all
over again.

After you have tried and it does not work do not give up. It can take some time to master. Once
you do master discus fish breeding, it will be a real reward to see the fry swimming around.

Happy Discus Breeding
