2. MEMORY VERSES:
John 7:37ā39a
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and
said in a loud voice,āLet anyone who is thirsty come to me and
drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of
living water will ļ¬ow from within them.ā 39 By this he meant the
Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.
Ephesians 5:18
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead,
be ļ¬lled with the Spirit,
3. A) KEY SCRIPTURES
Acts 2:38ā39
38 Peter replied,āRepent and be baptized,
every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ
for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The
promise is for you and your children and for
all who are far offāfor all whom the Lord
our God will call.ā
4. Luke 11:9ā13
9 āSo I say to you:Ask and it will be given to you; seek and
you will ļ¬nd; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10
For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks ļ¬nds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 āWhich of you fathers, if your son asks for[a] a ļ¬sh,
will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg,
will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are
evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how
much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit
to those who ask him!ā
5. John 7:37ā39
37 On the last and greatest day of the
festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud
voice,āLet anyone who is thirsty come to
me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me,
as Scripture has said, rivers of living water
will ļ¬ow from within them.ā[a] 39 By this
he meant the Spirit, whom those who
believed in him were later to receive. Up
to that time the Spirit had not been given,
since Jesus had not yet been gloriļ¬ed.
6. Ephesians 5:18
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which
leads to debauchery. Instead, be ļ¬lled
with the Spirit,
19 speaking to one another with
psalms, hymns, and songs from the
Spirit. Sing and make music from your
heart to the Lord, 20 always giving
thanks to God the Father for everything,
in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

8. B) INTRODUCTION
Jesus needed to be ļ¬lled (Luke 4:1,14)
The apostles needed to be ļ¬lled (Acts 2:2ā4)
Paul needed to be ļ¬lled (Acts 9:17)
We also need to be ļ¬lled with the Holy Spirit.
This is not simply becoming a Christian and receiving
the Holy Spirit as a deposit guaranteeing our salvation
(Ephesians 1:13ā14).
9. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18),
and so had the Holy Spirit in Him all His life
He still needed to be ļ¬lled with the Holy Spirit in
order to do all that His Father had sent Him for.
This happened when He was baptised in water at the
river Jordan (Luke 3:21ā22).
12. The disciples received the Holy
Spirit when Jesus breathed on
them (John 20:22), but had to wait
to received the baptism with the
Holy Spirit before they began their
ministry (Acts 1:4ā5;Acts 2:2ā4).
The Bible uses many different ways
to describe this ļ¬lling.These
include:
being ļ¬lled (Acts 2:4);
being baptised (Acts 1:5);
13. the Holy Spirit coming upon (Acts
1:8);
receiving the Holy Spirit (Acts
8:17);
pouring out of the Holy Spirit
(Acts 10:45).
It is not the label that matters
but what actually happens, that
is, we are enabled to do Godās
will and to be true disciples of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
14.
15. It must be remembered that we
are not just to be ļ¬lled once ā
we need to be continually ļ¬lled
(Ephesians 5:18).
The ļ¬rst disciples were ļ¬lled at
least twice, Acts 2:1ā4;Acts 4:31
31 After they prayed, the place where
they were meeting was shaken.And
they were all ļ¬lled with the Holy Spirit
and spoke the word of God boldly.
16. C) A DRINKING GLASS
ANALOGY
Our lives are like drinking
glasses; they are made to be
ļ¬lled and used.We are to be
channels for His Holy Spirit here
on earth, not like a drain pipe,
but like a reservoir that holds
enough to meet every need
where the life and power of
God is required.
17. C) A DRINKING GLASS
ANALOGY
Our lives are like drinking
glasses; they are made to be
ļ¬lled and used.We are to be
channels for His Holy Spirit here
on earth, not like a drain pipe,
but like a reservoir that holds
enough to meet every need
where the life and power of
God is required.
18. (i) A dirty stained glass
This glass needs to be thoroughly
cleaned before it is useable. Many
people donāt know the power of the
Holy Spirit inside them because they
need to be cleansed before they can be
ļ¬lled.
The Holy Spirit is clean, pure water.
If we invite him Jesus will come and
clean our lives from the inside out.
19. (ii) A cracked glass
A cracked glass leaks and is not
useful for holding water - weight
throw it away, but God never
does that: He heals the cracks.
Sometimes life has left us like
cracked or chipped glasses. God
in His power can touch us and
make us whole (Matthew 9:12).
20. Throughout Jesusā ministry here on
earth He healed those whose lives
were cracked, that is, those who
were suffering from sickness, pain,
loneliness and hurt.
The power of God healed them, and
they went away with a new strength.
God wants to do the same for us: to
bring healing and forgiveness in the
power of the cross and resurrection,
and then He wants to ļ¬ll us with His
life and power.
21. (iii) An upside-down glass
You canāt ļ¬ll a glass that is upside-
down. In the same way we need to
be open to God for Him to ļ¬ll us.
We need to be willing to receive the
Holy Spirit. as he will not force His
way into our lives.
Glasses are made to be ļ¬lled. We are
made to be ļ¬lled with the Holy Spirit
ā it is Godās purpose for your life.
22. D) ASK AND YOU WILL RECEIVE
The Holy Spirit makes us open to, and thirsty for, God.
It is a thirst that God satisļ¬es when we cry to Him
(John 7:37ā39).
Paul says ābe ļ¬lled with the Spiritā (Eph. 5:18).The actual
meaning of this statement is that we should āgo on
being ļ¬lled with the Spiritā. One experience is not
enough.
23. The Holy Spirit makes us aware of our need of His
power in our lives.
Ask the Father to ļ¬ll you with His Holy Spirit. Donāt be
afraid, (2 Timothy 1:7).
Open yourself to God.
Remember: If you are looking to God, He wonāt give
you something that is bad or evil (Luke 11:9ā13).
Focus your attention on Jesus and your heavenly
Father, then be open to receive all that they give you.
24. Let Him ļ¬ll your life with Godās
power. Receive from Him the gifts He
brings and learn how to praise,
worship and witness in the power of
God.
You might want to get someone who
knows what it means to be ļ¬lled with
the Holy Spirit to pray with you.
You can also pray on your own. Use a
simple prayer such as the following.
25. E) A SIMPLE PRAYER
āāDear Father, thank you for the promise that whoever asks
will receive, and whoever seeks will ļ¬nd. I know that I need
more of your power in my life. I know that I need more of the
fruit of your Holy Spirit in my life. Father, I confess my sin
before you, I forgive all those who have wronged me, and I ask
you for your cleansing in my life through the blood of Jesus. I
open my life completely to you. Please send the Holy Spirit
into my life in power right now. In Jesusā name,Amen.āā
26. QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION
POINTS
1. Some of the biblical hindrances to leading a life in the
fulness of the Spirit are: disobedience (Acts 5:32), pride (1
Peter 5:5), lack of faith (Hebrews 11:6), an evil motivation
(Acts 8:18ā24). Can you think of any others, especially in
your own life?
2. Do you need to be ļ¬lled for the ļ¬rst time or ļ¬lled
afresh with the Holy Spirit? Donāt put it off.Ask and
receive from your heavenly Father.
27. 3. Why do so many Christians feel that they donāt need
to be ļ¬lled with the Holy Spirit? Discuss.
4. How can we meet the needs of the world in the way
God the Father wants us to (like Jesus did) without being
ļ¬lled with the Holy Spirit (like Jesus was)? Discuss this
after reading John 14:12!
5. Does God change us to be like a robot when we are
ļ¬lled with the Holy Spirit, or does He want us to choose
to do His will in every situation He places us?
28. G) SUMMARY AND
APPLICATION
1. To be ļ¬lled with the Holy Spirit
continually is essential if we are to be
true disciples of Jesus and do whatever
our heavenly Father asks us to do.
2. The essence of the Spirit-ļ¬lled life is
not how much of the Spirit do I have,
because I have all of Him, but how
much does He have of me!
29. 3. People are made by God to be ļ¬lled
with the Holy Spirit so that they can be
channels for the fulness of Godās power.
4. We need to be prepared, clean,
ready vessels to be ļ¬lled with the Holy
Spirit.
5. God the Father has promised that
whoever asks Him will receive the Holy
Spirit.
