Maziwi Island, a popular tourist destination off the coast of Tanzania known for its white sand beaches and coral reefs, has completely disappeared. Conservation experts are alarmed by its vanishing, with one describing it as a "catastrophe." A conservationist who had previously visited the idyllic 1500 acre island could not find any trace of it on a return trip. He speculates that dynamiting of the coral reefs and clearing of the island's vegetation left it vulnerable to powerful monsoon storms, which likely washed the island away. Locals are reluctant to discuss the affair due to a superstition that the island's disappearance signals the end of the world.
