Portugal has had an anti-discrimination law regarding disability since 1999. The law aims to prevent discrimination based on disability in all areas of life. It requires accessibility structures be implemented in public spaces, transportation, schools, and the internet to support disabled people. While progress has been made, challenges remain in ensuring full inclusion and equality. Sports organizations also work to promote Paralympic athletes and adaptive sports. The annual "Magical Firefly" campaign raises money each May to support institutions assisting disabled people across Portugal.

In Portugal there is a general anti-discrimination law
regarding disability since 1999.
The purpose of this law is to prevent and prohibit
discrimination based on disability, in all its forms, and to
penalize the practice of acts which result in the violation of
any fundamental rights;
This law binds all the society, singular or collective person
and public or private entities.

The law considers discriminatory practices against people
with disabilities, being intentional or negligent acts or
omissions which, because of a person's disability, violate
the principle of equality, in particular:
- the procedure directly by the employer, or through
instructions given to his employees or the employment

or mental nature, the offer of employment, cessation of
employment contract or refusal to hire;
- the limitation to access the normal exercise of an
economic activity.

• ramps and sidewalks lowered to the wheelchair;
• tactile floors (special floors perceived by touch) and
alert for blind people;
• metal bars in the entrances of buildings;
• sidewalks and streets in perfect condition without
holes and damages;

• elevators in the buses for wheelchairs and places
reserved for people with low mobility
• extension of specialized vehicles for the transport of
disabled people in small towns
• qualified and specialized professionals for the care of
people with disabilities

schools for the teaching of children with special
disabilities;
• Hiring professionals who know how to use sign
language;
• Provide free braille materials and new
technologies for school activities;

Founded in September of 2008, the constitution of Portugal
Paralympic Committee (PCC) was a need felt for long time in
the national sport context, while element that is intended to
add quality to the sport system. It corresponds to a national
legal imperative, but also and no less relevant, to an
international demand.

The «Magical Firefly» Campaign is a campaign held annually
during the month of May with the purpose of raising money
to institutions that help disabled people in Portugal.
This campaign mobilizes thousands of people, such as
families, technicians and anonymous citizens.
