In your essay, you will (A) present the writer's ideas accurately and fairly, using your skills in summarizing, paraphrasing, and using quotations. And you will (B) present a thoughtful response, in which you take a stand on the major issue of the original.
You don't need additional information from the internet and you don't need to look for any more sources. If you do want to use another source, you need to clear it with your instructor.
Preliminary Steps
1. Read, re-read, annotate the article you chose.
2. Complete the "Responding to Writing" worksheet to help clarify and organize your thoughts on the issues.

A Possible Outline for Your Essay

Chapter 1 of "Minding the Obligation Gap in Community Colleges" opens by challenging the idea of "disruption" and how we're conditioned through our educational experiences to categorize this as a negative action from a student. The authors suggest a shift in perspective away from the behavior and towards the educational structures themselves. As stated in the reading, community colleges often act as the first step for PERMSCs to pursue their professional goals and endeavors. Therefore, the information presented here should be of key interest to those that serve in community college, both as administrators and educators. We need to look at the European American system that we've become accustomed to and become aware of how this ties into cultural dissonance, equity gaps and hyper marginalization of students.
The emphasis of White Supremacy, especially in the "Bursting the Myth" section, is a topic that has and will continue to be highlighted in the midst of our current social movements, namely Black Lives Matter. The prevalence and continuation of racism is due to White Supremacy being a foundational block of many of our systems in America today, including education. This is a topic that I got the chance to do more research on when focusing on CRT (Critical Race Theory) in graduate school and how this translates to higher education settings. The call for racial equality, social justice and reform has continued to increase in volume throughout the past several years. Just in the past year alone, more educational institutions are focusing and aligning with this movement on a national (and global) scale. While it may take many years to completely dismantle White Supremacy from education and in our nation as a whole, recognizing the issues and systems that are barriers for success for PERMSCs is a step in the right direction.

Not so long ago, I was in charge of Safety for a fleet of vehicles and drivers. The trucks always had a "team", i.e. 2, and sometimes 3 to a truck to perform delivery duties. There always seemed to be accidents that were minor (damage) to the vehicles with no injuries to the driver team. These accidents would mostly occur while backing. Prior to my managing of fleet safety, technological advancements had "SUBSTITUTED" the job of a good old-fashined "spotter". Back up cameras, sensors and additional mirrors had replaced a person simply disembarking the vehicle and positioning themselves in a safe location to make eye-contact with the driver; and usher the driver/truck into the parked position. Seeing that "ENGINEERING CONTROLS" were already in-place, I needed to affect "ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROLS" and revise the drivers current Standard Operating Procedures, SOP's, (outlining backing) to incorporate the passenger performing duties as a spotter. This also necessitated a training component for the entire fleet of drivers as to expectations around both critical functions of driving and acting as the spotter. This change was implemented successfully and minor-backing accidents, without a spotter, reduced significantly and the engineering controls were present as an additional measure in lieu of ELIMINATING the spotter.
