This document discusses digital citizenship in an increasingly connected world. It begins by defining digital citizenship according to Netsafe and discusses the work of several experts in digital literacy and citizenship. Examples are given of how digital citizenship was demonstrated during the Canterbury earthquakes in New Zealand. Considerations for educators working in online spaces are reviewed, including who owns online content, how long it will remain online, and how issues will be managed. Other resources on digital citizenship are recommended, and educators are asked to consider what support they need to develop digital citizenship skills in students and themselves.
