The following are some of the different ranges of food product
development;
• New to the world
• Line extension
• Me too products
NEW TO THE WORLD
• These are products that are completely new and different to
pre-existing products. For example, new technologies such
as genetically modified foods.
ADVANTAGES OF NEW TO THE WORLD
PRODUCTS.
• The product is more likely to be successful for consumers.
• If the product can be successful on a world scale, the
company will get enough profits and can have a competitive
edge.
DISADVANTAGES OF A NEW TO THE WORLD
PRODUCTS.
• Due to a lot of products in the market, new to world products
are difficult to develop due to existing food ideas.
• Costs associated with the development and promotion of
new products can be a lot.
• Costs to manufacture new processing equipment, staff
training, and the source of new ingredients can be a lot.
• There is an increased cost of marketing the product to the
target consumers.
LINE EXTENSION
• The concept of Product Line Extension can be defined as a business strategy
where a company plans to expand its established product brand name with
a new range of items in the product category.
• The Product Line Extension can be in the form of new colors, forms, shapes,
sizes, flavors, packaging, and ingredients.
• The main idea and agenda behind the same are to increase the sales and
reach of the already established product at the market place.
ADVANTAGES OF LINE EXTENSION PRODUCTS
• They can meet consumer needs and increase market sales
• They can have increased shelf space, increased brand
prominence, and increased company promotion.
• Since processing and formulation are similar to an existing
product, the new product is inexpensive and easier to
produce
• The manufacturer already has the appropriate equipment
and trained staff.
DISADVANTAGES OF LINE EXTENSION
PRODUCTS
• If the product doesn’t meet the consumer’s needs, the
product maybe rejected
• If sensory preferences don’t meet consumer expectations
that is colour, flavour, the product may be rejected
• If unsuccessful, a line extension may affect the company’s
image.
ME TOO PRODUCTS
• These refer to copies of existing products and thus the development
of a cheaper product in the market.
• These products replicate the characteristics of the successful new
product already in the market.
• A company releases “me too” to rival a successful product and
compete for market shares.
ADVANTAGES OF ME TOO PRODUCTS
• The benefits are that there is already a defined need or
market for the product. And therefore the company doesn’t
need to carry out market research.
• Also, there are fewer risks and the products are cheaper and
quicker to produce than new innovative ones.
DISADVANTAGES OF ME TOO PRODUCTS
• To be competitive with an already established product may
require aggressive marketing and promotional activities,
which are risky and expensive.
