Innate immunity provides a first line of defense through nonspecific, rapid responses without immunological memory. Adaptive immunity provides a second line of defense through slower, specific responses to different antigens that generate immunological memory through B lymphocytes. Both involve the complement system and immune cells, but innate immunity uses the alternative and MBL pathways while adaptive immunity uses the classic pathway along with B lymphocytes.
