5. Visual acuity is a measure of your central vision, the ability
to distinguish details and shapes of objects.
Distant vision is tested with a chart with differently sized
letters read from a distance of six metres away. This is called
the Snellen’s Test Types.
Someone who can read the second line of letters up from the
bottom is said to have 6/6 vision. This used to be called 20/20
vision when the test was done from 20 feet away before metric
measures took over.
6/6 does not translate into perfect vision and does not indicate
other important aspects of sight such as peripheral vision, the
ability to identify colours or depth perception.
Having 6/12 vision means you can see at six metres what a
person with normal vision can see at 12 metres away.
6. Eye tests are important
To maintain good eye health and vision, it is important to
have your eyes tested every two years, or more frequently
if advised. You should seek advice immediately if you have
any sudden loss of vision, eye pain, inflammation or
irritation. Most eye diseases can be identified during a
routine eye test and treated when detected at an early
stage. If you have health problems, such as diabetes, you
may need to visit your optometrist more frequently to
detect any complications.
What options are available to correct impaired vision?
There are many safe and affordable options for those in
need of vision correction. They include:
Glasses. Perhaps the most traditional form of vision
correction, glasses improve vision by bending light. They
are practical, affordable and safe.
Contact lenses. Contact lenses are often chosen for
cosmetic reasons or by people with an active lifestyle.
There are many different types, colours and materials, so
it is best to seek advice and shop around to find the
contact lenses that work best for you.
Corrective surgery. Vision correction surgery improves
sight by changing the refractive, or light bending,
properties of the eye. Refractive surgery restores a
person's ability to see at a moderate visual acuity,
meaning that there may still be a need in some cases for
glasses or contact lenses.

9. Visionfor Food: Eat Healthy
Food is taking centre stage in health. Not that food choices weren’t always important – your
mom told you to eat those veggies for a reason. It’s just that there’s been an explosion of food-
related research that shows the strong connection between food and health.
When it comes to vision and food, growing evidence supports the idea that various vitamins
and minerals protect vision for the long haul. And that’s more important today than ever
before.
Good nutrition fuels your body, contributes to healthy eyes and can even influence how
your mind functions.
In your teen years, a healthy diet is especially important for keeping you alert and
strengthening your muscles and bones. Wise food choices also help keep your skin smooth
and clear for a more confident you.
Besides giving you the energy you need to thrive in school, sports and other activities, good
nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining healthy vision. Starting good eating habits in
your teens will help you see your best, maintain a healthy weight as an adult and may
decrease your risk of certain serious eye problems later on, including cataracts, macular
degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
Here are a few key vitamins and nutrients that play an important role in good vision:
10. Vitamin A and Your Eyes
Vitamin A, typically the first ingredient on the label of
multivitamin bottles, is very important to keeping your eyes
healthy. A deficiency of vitamin A can cause night vision problems.
It can also cause severe dry eyes, which can lead to eye
infections and vision loss. Research suggests vitamin A also may
lower your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration later in life.
It also may slow vision loss in people with an eye condition
called retinitis pigments.
Vitamin A also plays a vital role in bone growth and helps you fight
off pink eye symptoms and other infections by keeping your immune
system strong. And it is essential for healthy skin too. But
consuming too much of vitamin A is also not appropriate.
Carotenoids for Good Vision
Other important nutrients for your eyes and vision are the yellow,
orange and red pigments in fruits and vegetables that are called
carotenoids. There are hundreds of carotenoids, but the most
common ones found in North American diets are alpha-carotene,
beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene.
Carotenoids are also called phytonutrients, a term that describes
plant-derived nutrients confirmed as important to human health.
11. Pro-vitamin A carotenoids. Alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and beta-
cryptoxanthin are called pro-vitamin A carotenoids because your body converts
them to vitamin A during digestion.
Currently no recommended dietary allowance exists for pro-vitamin A
carotenoids, but the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society
and the American Heart Association recommend that everyone eat a variety
of carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables daily.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid), a water-soluble vitamin and
powerful antioxidant, is abundant in many fruits and vegetables. Top
sources include oranges and orange juice, red and green bell peppers,
grapefruit, strawberries, broccoli and kale.
